Pingie - Convert RSS feeds into SMS text messages for your mobile phone
Posted on January 9, 2008 at 6:31 am
If you’re addicted to RSS feeds, you’re probably using a web app that takes an RSS feeds and pushes it to your cell or mobile phone. That way, you can keep up with the latest news via RSS while on the go.
However, there are two issues with most of the services that currently send RSS feeds to mobile phones:
- Usually requires some kind of application that needs to be installed on the phone itself
- Will require an unlimited data access plan in order to run normally
Sometimes it’s hard for people to install apps on their phones either due to technical reasons or restrictions. Also, some people simply do not want to have to pay an extra $30 a month for a data plan! And if you’re simply stuck with a cell phone that doesn’t support Internet browsing, it doesn’t matter whether you want to pay or not!
Pingie is a new service that can be used instead for any of the above situations where you would like to get RSS feeds updates on your cell phone without any issues.
The free service allows you to subscribe to an RSS feed from your desktop and then sends you text messages on your cell phone when the feed is updated. It’s free and can work with just about any mobile device.
Of course, if you have a cell phone with mobile web access and it’s fairly new, like a Blackberry, iPhone, or Motorola Q, then you can simply log into the mobile versions of your favorite online RSS readers like Google Reader, Bloglines, etc and read the latest items.
Pingie is specially for those who do not have full web access or for those who do not have the ability to install apps on their phones (lots of Verizon phones are like this).
Simply enter your email address, your phone number and the link to the RSS feed that you want to monitor and click Submit.
Every time one of your RSS feeds updates, you’ll get a SMS text message on your phone. So if you’re stuck in a cube all day with restricted internet? Pingie can help bring your favorite site updates directly to your mobile phone.
Addicted to Woot? You can get notifications on the latest Woot item. How about SlickDeals? You can be alerted the second the latest deal is posted. Want the latest developments from CES or Macworld? You can get those too!
The only thing you would want before using Pingie is an unlimited text messaging plan! If you’re getting too many text messages, you can suspend the updates. To suspend the service click “Edit Account” in your profile or simply text “Ping Stop” to 95495. Enjoy! Source AppScout

I had tried one service like this before which can give you a url which allows people to get new post links to mobile. Wondering though how many people would like to use it.
Generally people are pissed off due to the SMS scams and then this can be terrible if your posting frequency is very high.
This is a good one but if you subscribe to a frequently updated blog then you will regret it
Hey guys, yeah I thought about the same thing! Definitely don’t want to use this service for LifeHacker! Maybe for my blog!
