This is fine, but you didn’t refer to VISTA – What about a program that doesn’t appear in “StartUp” but starts up anyway????? I tried unchecking the service, then the program would no longer run correctly.

Thank you for teaching me how to use the MSCONFIG utility. My son told me over the phone that I needed to use that to make my computer faster, but never explained how to do it.

The MSCONFIG utility is the most useful part of Windows! Thank goodness they kept it in Windows 7 also! I can’t live without it!

Hello editors!

Can you give me some tips on how I get rid of an annoying message in Windows? I briefly after booting from Wndows XP Home Eddition constantly receive a message: failure: iexplore has encountered a problem and needs to close, for more information about this error, click here: And then an error signature like this:: AppName iexplore.exe Mod ver oooo Offset: 31c4dc4b Mode name unknown or other. Then the system shuts down spontaneously or hangs!

Added to my above query. I went to add or remove programs, and dealassistant is there. But it won’t let me remove it. This is very aggravating as it takes up RAM and I have very little to spare.

Ok, I used msconfig and unchecked the programs I don’t want to start up again. Everything went accordingly except one program rechecked itself. It’s called dealassistant.exe. Is there any way I can get this completely off my computer so it doesn’t start up anymore. But the bad part is, it doesn’t only run itself when I start my computer. I completely end the process, and it starts itself back up about a minute later. Anyone have advice for me?

@Jay – You can choose to start in “Selective Startup” mode. That will not mess up your computer in any way. It basically means you do not want the computer to load up all the startup programs, i.e. the ones you unchecked. If you go back to Normal Mode, everything will be checked again. That’s all that message means.

I just tried to run msconfig to eliminate some startup items. After the required reboot, a daunting message appeared to the effect of “you have altered windows…do you want to run in normal mode” or words to that effect. I chose NORMAL MODE, not knowing if the others would mess up my system (XP PRO). When I reentered msconfig – start, the programs the items I unchecked were still checked. Which option should I select after unchecking startup programs? Thanks.
