Previously I had written an article on how you can access your media files from anywhere through a web browser using a service called Orb, which basically turned your computer into a hosting server of it’s own so that you can directly access files from your computer without having to upload them to a hosting site. That’s definitely a very cool service, but since it’s only stored on your local computer, your media is not backed up and your computer has to be on all the time.

If you want to access and listen to your media files from anywhere and have them backed up on a hosting site also, check out MP3Tunes. With MP3Tunes, you have unlimited storage for your music (after a certain amount of time) and the ability to listen on any computer via high-quality streaming audio.

There are a few more services out there like MP3Tunes, but I like this one the best because it supports not only MP3 format, but also WMA, MP4, AAC, OGG, AIF, MIDI, and even the iTunes format. You can also listen to your music through Winamp and iTunes with more media players support coming soon.

When you sign up, you have the option of the free account or the Premium account. With the free account, you start off with 1GB and later get upgraded to unlimited once you add a certain number of tracks to your account. I’m not too sure why they do it this way, but eventually get unlimited storage, just keep adding your files. Also for the free account, the size limit for a song is 10MB whereas for the premium account it’s 50MB. Also, for the Premium account, you can play your music on non-PC devices, such as on your mobile phone or on your Tivo.

MP3Tunes provides a syncing software called the Oboe software suite, which will sync up the music on your computer with the online “locker”. You can then access your music from any Internet connection or sync the music back onto another computer other than the original computer. With the free account, you can sync onto up to 3 computers, but the Premium account is unlimited. The Premium account is only $40 a year, so not very much if you have tons of music files that you would like backed up and easily accessible.

Another nice feature that I like with MPTunes is the Oboe Sideload plugin, which allows you to add free MP3 files you find on the Internet to your locker with a single click in IE or Firefox. Also, the syncing software runs on Windows, MAC or Linux.

Once you’ve downloaded the software and synced up your music, you can play it online by logging into MP3Tunes and clicking on the Locker link. You can browse through your collection by artist, album, or by playlists you’ve created.

You can also purchase music from the MP3Tunes online store for around 88 cents a track and without any DRM restrictions. Definitely a great way to store your music online and enjoy it from any computer or mobile device!

Any other sites that beat out MP3Tunes, post a comment! Thanks!
