How to make a torrent using uTorrent
Posted on July 17, 2008 at 5:34 am
I often get asked how to create a torrent and how to upload them to a tracking service. Here I thought we can run through what is probably the easiest method using uTorrent and Demonoid as the tracking service. Also, for the sake of keeping everything on the “up and up”, I will demonstrate uploading the free and open source multi-media Player VLC.
First open uTorrent and select File >> Create New Torrent.

The Create New Torrent dialog window will open so we are able to enter in all of the data required to make the torrent. First you will need to browse to the location of the torrent directory.

This will open Windows Explorer where you will want to browse to the directory where the file you want to create into a torrent is located, highlight it and click OK.

You will then go back to the Create new Torrent window. For Demonoid you will want to enter in the correct Torrent Tracking properties which you can get from their site.
Also add in any comments you feel are relevant to the torrent. I also check the Start Seeding box so the torrent begins uploading after it is created. Finally just click on Create and Save as.

Windows Explorer will once again open so you can create a name for the torrent and choose where to save the torrent file.

Ok, now that the torrent is created and shows to be seeding in uTorrent (you will see a red arrow next to the torrent as it is not communicating with the tracker yet) we need upload the torrent file to Demonoid. Log into your account, select upload torrent, choose a category, agree to uploading rules, and begin the upload process. The main thing you want to check is you are downloading the correct torrent file and using the correct tracker address as they change it periodically.

After is is uploading you will need to go back to uTorrent and make sure everything is communicating successfully. You may need to wait up to three minutes after uploading the torrent to Demonoid. The easiest way is to keep updating the tracker periodically during the next few minutes.
