Zinkmo solves one of my biggest problems: synchronizing all of my bookmarks between different browsers and across multiple machines. You can achieve almost the same thing using Google Bookmarks, but I like this service more because you can not only access your bookmarks via a toolbar button in your browser or online through any web browser, but you can also create separate publicly shared bookmark folders that others can subscribe to.
To get started, download the Zinkmo client for Internet Explorer or the add-on if you’re using Firefox. Actually, you have to download the Zinkmo Application and IF you’re using FireFox, also the add-on. Also, you’ll want to sign up for a free account before starting the install as it requires you to give your username and password.
You can choose whether to sync your IE favorites or Firefox bookmarks, or both!
Once you’ve installed the application and the plug-ins, restart the browser and go to Tools – Zinkmo Favorites in IE or Tools – Zinkmo Bookmarks in Firefox. The application will begin to synchronize all of your bookmarks.
Once your bookmarks are synchronized, you can now login and go to Online Manager to access all of your links. What I really like about Zinkmo is that is actually SYNCHRONIZES the bookmarks, so that if I delete a bookmark in FireFox and perform a sync (by going to Tools – Zinkmo Boomarks), the online folder will also remove that link. For some reason in Google Bookmarks nothing is ever deleted, which I hate because I usually like to bookmark stuff just to visit it once and never again.
And that’s just one feature of this service! Other features include the online link manager, auto sync, duplicate link checker, and link verification. For example, once I uploaded my giant list of links, I found that there were actually 66 duplicate entries!
You can access the link statistics by going to My Profile. You can also edit and move links using the online manager, such as renaming a link, deleting links, moving like to another folder, and tagging links.
You can make any folder Public by right-clicking on it and choosing Make Public. Once you do that, you can configure the folder access level from the My Profile page to either Publisher (full rights), Contributor (can make changes to the Public Folder like adding links), or Subscriber (can see all links but cannot make changes). This is a cool way to get a couple of friends to make one public folder and add links to it to create a repository.
Definitely a cool web app with more features than Google Bookmarks currently has. Once synced, you can access your bookmarks by logging into the site from any computer. Try it out!
