Note that this method for hiding file extensions works with Windows XP and Windows 7 also, nothing really has changed there.

Also, you really don't need to see file extensions unless you need to change them or figure out what kind of file you are working with.

Thank you so much for this! I was getting tired of always seeing the extensions for all of my files!! Any time I wanted to rename a file, I had to make sure to keep the extension otherwise I would get a warning! Thanks!

You don't need to show all the extensions if you have your files and folders organized. Just see the property sheet for the suspect file. If you have a good AV it should not even be there.

I guess it's all about having the knowledge and the option of knowing how to do things.
Whether or not we actually do them is up to us ....but I think it's good to know....

Or just press "Alt". Choose "Tools">"Folder options" <- exactly the same as Windows XP

I simply can´t browse without the extensions, I really don´t understand how you do that. It´s like to go out without the wallet.

Personally, I would always want to display the file extension for security reasons. Pen drive viruses take advantage of hidden file extensions and pass executable files as folders.

"For me, showing the file extensions for known files types is mostly distracting."
I am the completely opposite, for me, HIDING the file extensions for known files types is mostly distracting. I like the file extensions to be shown regardless of known or unknown file types. so that you always in control and know what you are dealing with.
