Buxfer - Free personal finance software to track your expenses
Posted on February 12, 2008 at 6:41 am
Earlier I had written about a new breed of personal financial management web sites that aim to take away the market share from Quicken and MS Money by allowing customers to track all of their money and expenses online for free!
Mint.com is an online financial management and budgeting software that I liked, but had a few features missing which made me end up not using it. However, there are more sites out there like this that are free and have even more features!
Buxfer is an online tool you can use to track everything related to your money, including how you are spending it, whether you are within your budget, who owes you money, and lots more. Easily keep track of how much money you have in each account and how much you are in debt.
It’s basically just like Quicken and MS Money, except it’s free and it’s on the web. That may or may not scare some people however! Storing your data online does not settle well with some people, especially since it’s ALL of your bank, credit card, and financial information.
One thing I like about Buxfer is that they are using the Google Gears API to give people the choice of whether they want to save the data on their local computer or on the Buxfer servers. This will give those people who are skeptical of storing data online a safe and secure choice to store data locally.
Another great thing about Buxfer over Mint.com is that it is integrated with several of the big name email services, so if you already have a gmail account, you can log in with that username and password, no need to create a new account.
Buxfer will try to automatically categorize your expenses, but you can further categorize them by using tags. You can also setup auto-tags to automate the process:
However, the best feature that makes me want to use Buxfer is the fact that you can import all of your financial data from your desktop software programs like Quicken or Microsoft Money! So if you hate being stuck to one computer that has your personal finance software installed, Buxfer is a great way to be able to access everything online at anytime from anywhere.
Finding a transaction in Buxfer is a piece of cake since it has an advanced search built into it. You can search for transactions by period, by group, by contact, by tag, or by keyword. You can then quickly filter the results by any of the criteria above.
One last feature of Buxfer that makes it really cool is the fact that you can send text messages from your cell phone for reporting transactions, or querying your balances. So before you decide to buy everyone dinner and slap it on your credit card, you can check your balance and limit via your mobile phone. Or if you have to pay someone cash for a service, you can instantly text message that to Buxfer and it will record it for you as an expense.
Overall, Buxfer is a great piece of software for managing personal finances! It’s free, secure, easy to use, and has lots of features. Can’t beat that! Enjoy!

I am very much impressed and highly inspired .I think Buxfer tool is very useful for people like me.Thank you for your suggestions
Nice post…
I would like to draw your attention to manageME.
1) It is so easy to use that even a small kid and a 66yrold grandpa can use it without any assistance
2) My husband finds it very addicted as he is able to keep a track record of his finances anywhere ,anytime while traveling.
3) my feedback is always properly dealt by these guys.
Also they are about to launch their fully loaded version http://www.manageme7.com/
BudgetToolkit.com is another good budgeting website. It
