Photo wiredness – Online photo editing and effects
Posted on July 8, 2008 at 5:15 am
Looking for a free online photo editor? One of the coolest things about digital photography is that the photos can be fixed up, dolled up, and captioned if you have the right tools. Of course you can buy photo editing packages, and some are worth the money. But free tools are available online, each with a different set of strengths and weaknesses.
Several digital photo special effects online tools have been reviewed in these pages such as flauntR, Dumpr and Graphita. Now, beta website wiredness offers a (so far) advertising and distraction-free online environment for photo editing and some special effects – without charge, registration or creating an account.
wiredness’ strengths are its speed, no-nonsense interface and integration to online photo album collossi Flickr and Picasa. Just surf over to wiredness, then you can
1) Upload a photo
2) Enter a URL to get a photo
3) Tell wiredness to access your Picasa or Flickr accounts to get a photo
If you link your online albums, you can browse and select album photos directly from wiredness, as below.

Once you select a photo, wiredness gives you a set of photo edit tools, some of which act real-time (such as resizing and cropping) and some act only after you select settings and click an action button. That’s not optimal because its a lot easier to see how color or brightness is adjusting if you use a real-time slider. But the options are many, and there is practically unlimited undo.
A good selection of edit effects is available from the Effects menu. Additionally there is a text tool and image overlay in the Tools.
From the Photos menu there are three common corrections which use presets – for under and over exposure and red eye removal. Of the other three effects, I like the Polaroid which adds an old-fashioned snapshot-like border to the image, which is perfect for posting in a collage on your blog or website. The rounded and watercolor effects work well also.

When your photo is ready, you can save it to your local disk, email it, or put it in your Flickr or Picasa account. Formats it can output are .PNG, .JPG and .GIF.
For more special effects such as creating a Rubik’s cube, or swirling the photo and others, better online tools such as this site has previously reviewed such as Dumpr and FlauntR can be tried. But if you crave a clean and fast user interface without registration and account hassles, by all means give wiredness a try.
