Download YouTube Videos – No Software Required

Posted on March 12, 2010 at 7:15 am

Finding a good piece of software to download streaming videos, especially for free, is not an easy task. If using a public computer, such as those at an office or school, installing software is not an option anyway.

KeepVid.com allows you to download videos from YouTube and other video sites for free, without downloading and installing any kind of software.  The interface is straight forward and easy to use, so even the least tech-savvy among us can enjoy videos featuring cats on skateboards for many future years.

First, find the YouTube video you want to watch. Either on the right side of the page or directly under the video is a box that says URL beside it. Select the contents of the box and copy it with ctrl+C.

In your browser’s address bar, type keepvid.com. When the site appears, paste your YouTube URL into the box that says URL and click Download.

You may then be asked to copy the letters from one of those super-annoying visual generators that are supposed to prove you are human. Yeah, like a computer would share your secret love of Lady Gaga videos! Anyway, if asked, oblige by copying the code, and click next.

KeepVid always gives at least two download options for your videos, depending on the original quality of the video. For the Lady Gaga example above, we are given four options from which to choose: three of those options save the file as a FLV file, while the last saves as an MP4.

If concerned about file size, the FLV options are nice. But, if you plan on using the video in a PowerPoint presentation, MP4 is the only format on this list that will play within PowerPoint easily. Click the link next to your choice.

Choose a destination for your video file as you would with any other download, and depending on your internet connection, you can be watching Lady Gaga and skateboarding felines on your machine within 1-10 minutes.

    http://www.keepvid.com doesn’t work for me

after copying and pasting the url, it says
    –processing –
then asks what file format i want

    after i make the choice
    it says “page not found”
and lists a url that bears no resemblance to what i pasted in

don’t see the bot-fighter mentioned either

    anyone else experiencing this?

Not working…. But I got an even cool trick here

Sorry, but this is way too complicated in this day in age. Just use 3outube.com. While on YouTube, change the URL from youtube.com/randomstring to 3outube.com/randomstring. Way easier.

i appreciate the suggestion and tried it with these results:

the player i downloaded from this site is very small….and if i play what i download from this site on another flv player, the sound is out of synch and the picture quality degraded

so not the solution i’m looking for

no one can figure out how to make your tip work

can you check your own directions and possibly refine or revise them so we can actually get the results you address?

The link: http://keepvid.com/ is working here… I just downloaded a video this morning. I just tried it now and it’s working. What results are you getting?

All you need to do is paste a link to a YouTube video in the URL box, then click on the file type you want to download. Try this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmGVYki-oyQ (it’s a Weird Al very long video)- paste it in the URL box on KeepVid.com. The next page asks if you’d like to download an FLV. If you click FLV, the file downloads and plays with an FLV player.

Now, it does not work with the “long” youtube addresses, like if I was to click on one of the referred videos on the right, they won’t download because the URL changes to something like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI3b7fstNCo&feature=SeriesPlayList&p=511742906C7A3F0E

But, on that same video, if I copy where it says “URL” and paste it at keepvid.com, it will still download.

I am using Windows 7 32 Bit with the Chrome Browser. This has also been tested on Vista and XP Pro machines in IE.

i think keepvid does not download videos from youtube anymore for free. i just tried it now and it gives me this message: “Please use the KeepVid program to download videos from youtube.” When i followed the link for downloading the Keepvid program, it’s asking for a license key which you need to purchase. =(

keepvid has been great for me (used it for over a year now). But now all of a sudden, they flipped the script (bait and switch). I don’t get it because there are other free software alternatives that people will probably use as opposed to paying to download keepvid software just to get a youtube video. Well, it was good while it last.

    @rroberto

R u nuts… that link is not about any software but about downloading you tube videos in all formats without any software.

    keepvid.com sucks!

“After you download the KeepVid program, you will need to purchase a license to activate the program and start downloading videos.”

yeah-RIGHT! There are so many better ways to download YouTube videos.

  13. Nikki said on :

okay, smarty pants, what does this mean when they say:
“Please use the KeepVid program to download videos from youtube.”

Go there and you will see that the “program” needs to be downloaded:

    “Download the program
Click here to download the KeepVid program.”

    read further and it says…
    “Running the program
After you download the KeepVid program, you will need to purchase a license to activate the program and start downloading videos.
Please note that the program does not work on Mac or Linux based computers.”

As I said before, maybe they WERE… they WERE good for downloading youtube videos but not anymore._ A change which was obviously made within the past week or 2.

Another decent site for downloading YouTube videos as MP3 files is Vid2MP3.com. Or you can go to ListenToYouTube.com. This is if you want audio versions of YouTube videos.

Can someone tell me a site or add-on that I can use to download videos from any site, not just YouTube? Thanks.

    they’re having 404 url problems…so doesn’t work either

KeepVid.com doesn’t work anymore. It did, but now they want you to pay for it.

The best solution I’ve found is to use DownloadHelper in Firefox. It’s a plugin that sniffs for the files available when a page loads and gets the URL for you.

    Try YouTubeDownloadHD, it works:

    youtubedownloaderhd.com

You can download the videos in any available format and the HD versions.

I use Keepvid often. It works fine and their “Keep it” toolbar button is awesome. Anyone can download videos easily.

Lance! I tried that 3outube thing and it worked perfectly – and was by far the easiest method I’ve tried – to download youtube video.

Then I used Any DVD Converter to convert for Movie Maker use. (but you have to limit to 3 minutes unless you buy it).

So, THANKS for the 3outube suggestion!!!

I can’t get the videos to play on my computer or windows media player? Is there another format or something to download them in? I just want to add them to my mp3 player

Why i cant download dailymotion video from keepvid.com?? and where can i download dailymotion videos without the downloader, just the site like keepvid?

  23. Stiletto said on :

Even though I swear I just used it the other day, today it announced when I tried to download a video that you now need to purchase a license key from them.

Way to piss off the internet, Keepvid.
