Download Expensive iPhone Apps for Free at FreeAppaDay

Awhile back we wrote an article on Giveawayoftheday.com, a site with the great idea of giving away a free piece of software that normally costs $20-100 for free, but only for a 24-hour period of time.

We love those concept, and we have gained many great pieces of software this way, all without paying anything at all. FreeAppaDay.com has taken this same 24-hour free software concept, but applied it to iPhone apps.

Each day, Free App a Day (or FAAD, as they call themselves) offers an App Store app that normally costs anywhere from $1-$30 for free—but only for 24 hours. The apps are 100% legitimate; meaning, no jailbreaking is required.

To install the app, you just log in to the app store from iTunes or your iPhone and download it. The fastest way to find it in the App store is to search for the App by name.

The kind of software offered is predominately games, but there are many utilities as well. Some of the games offered are ones we have recommended in the past, like Chalkboard Stunts.

Users rank apps on FreeAppaDay.com, so future buyers know if the app is worth the money after the 24-hour free offer is over. Some of the apps featured are free anyway, but many of us never would never try them without Free App A Day’s recommendation. Featured apps are listed on both sides of the Web page along with calculated user ranking.

If you want to see a list of recent non-game apps, there is a tab on the calendar for that will list them for you.

All of the skeptics out there will want to know why the apps are free. Well, that’s simple this time—most of the apps that are offered on FreeAppaDay.com rise from obscurity to the App Store’s top 10 list in 24 hours—Fingerzilla rose from no ranking to #1 in one day according to Yahoo Finance.

A high ranking on the App Store list is like gold, since everyone who logs in to the App Store will see the most downloaded software before they see any other, meaning more people will at least click the software to learn more about it. This leads to more sales.

Plus, word of mouth advertising in the tech world is golden. If you like an app, you are likely to tell your friends via your favorite social networking site. Since your friends trust your opinion (ok, some of them do), they may buy the app you recommend. So, for the apps that advertise with FreeAppaDay.com, the money is well spent, and we all benefit from free software.

Many of the apps offered also work for the iPod Touch and the site plans to offer apps for the iPad when it debuts in April. Our only real complaint about this site is the RSS feed is not working properly, so you must either sign up for daily emails announcing the free app of the day, subscribe to the Twitter feed, or surf the site every day.

For those of us who rely on RSS feeds, this is a bummer. Otherwise, the site offers a great service and an opportunity to try apps many of us would have overlooked.

One Last thing: The FAAD Of Fame is where the votes are tabulated and the key for devs is to reach The FAAD GOLD CERTIFIED level. if they do, the gold apps will remain front page in the faad of fame section below the calendar giving additional exposure to the apps for 3 Months instead of one (the calendar is a sliding calendar apps enters in the lower right and exist in the upper left).

Every 3 months we have a FAAD Award event, last time was at the GDC and next time around will be at E3. The Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards are based on the votes from the community but The top downloaded app receives the coveted Platinum FAAD Award which awards the top downloaded App for any month!

  1. Receive Notifications When Paid iPhone Apps Turn Free Says:

[...] FreeAppAlert is a simple way to find free Apps, and certainly easier than scrolling through apps on iTunes to check prices. The only drawback we see is some of the apps listed do not stay free—some of them are just free for the day they are listed on the site, usually due to promotions like FreeAppADay. [...]
