How to use your webcam as a security monitoring device

Posted on July 16, 2009 at 5:57 am

Not many people are fortunate enough to know what happens to their homes and offices while they are out. It’s when our most prized possessions are left unattended that prying eyes are tempted to steal or ruin what we care about the most.

Thieves seize the opportunity as soon as you are out of sight and without hard evidence on video, you will have a tough time proving your case.

With video recorded at the exact time and date of the event you will be able to bring that thief to justice once and for all!

There are few choices to consider when choosing a good software.  Do you want to constantly take pictures of a site every few seconds or so and save the image to a remote location automatically?

If that is what you need you can try PAMO Simple Web Spy Cam from http://www.pamo-software.com.

You can set it to capture images at an interval that you choose (i.e. 30 seconds) then save the images locally or remotely on an FTP server.  Once you get the images saving on a remote server you can then browse the images from anywhere.

Another good but free tool is Senriska.  Instead of saving images constantly, Senriska can detect motion and record video only when motion is detected – a pretty nice feature!

It is still on its beta version but a lot has tried it already.  You can get the latest build from http://sourceforge.net/projects/senriska

When it detects a movement –a a video clipped is saved on the directory you provided.

There are many uses for such camera security systems. You could see who is snooping around your home or office, you could monitor your child’s actions from the other room, you could also see what your kids are up to when they come home from school.

Ben Carigtan shows you how it’s done!

    Thanks for this post.

I’ve gathered a list of video surveillance software. Some are for personal use and some are for commercial/industrial use: http://www.activitymonitorings.....lance1.php .
