I updated to Windows 7 and thought that the USB not working problem to be related. However, I will say that the ports worked after upgrade but when I plugged in my ipod the ports all stopped reading devices. THIS is a GREAT FIX and it worked!

Ive been having a problem with my USB for a while now. Whenever i plugged a USB in my whole computer would freeze, and have to be restarted to work again. However, recently my house has been painted, and my computer has been unplugged. since ive connected it again the USB ports seem to be working fine, but now i have this problem.

Hi,
for those cases when un-plugging the cord doesn't help:

As Kallulu said, try disabling the corresponding USB Root Hub in Device manager (you'll see your "Unknown USB device" under Properties > Power tab). This alone might get your device successfully installed but probably only in USB 1.1 (slower) mode, resulting in "This device can perform faster" msg. So NOW restart, unplug, boot and than try re-enable the USB Root Hub again. With a little bit of luck, everything should work now...

Couldn't believe this would work but it did- incredible! I'd wasted many hours doing all sorts of fixes - I knew the device and cable worked as I'd tried it on another PC so it had to be my PC and this was so simple!! Thankyou
