The Internet is a wonderful place. There is so much information that you can get from it, some is useful yet and some is not. If you rely on the Internet to do your work, you may find out that some Internet websites can really decrease your work productivity. Sites such as Youtube, Facebook, MySpace, ESPN are more than capable of distracting any Internet user out there to waste their precious work time. Therefore, you and I need a productivity tool like 8aweek to track and curb our bad internet browsing habits , so more valuable time can be spent on more productive online tasks.

What is 8aweek?

8aweek is a Firefox toolbar that helps you to track and manage your browsing habits better. Based on research, an average employee wastes 8 hours of time per week. 8aweek was named as such to let you reclaim those 8 unproductive hours.

Once you have 8aweek installed, it will start tracking time you spent on each website that you have visited and has the ability to block you from accessing websites marked as restricted , thus saving you some time to do more important things.

  • 2 modes of operation - “Countdown Mode” allows you to still visit restricted websites once the time limit is over while “Block Mode” blocks you from accessing a restricted website - which is a good way to discipline yourselves.

  • Snooze option - to ignore and add extra time once the time is over, you can select the “Snooze” option. I recommend that you set the total number of snooze allowed to restrict excessive usage of it.
  • Logging options - to take full features of 8aweek such as the ability to save and view long term habits, choose the “Logging Enabled” option. If you are more concern about Internet privacy, choose “Local Logging” to store website tracking information inside your computer. You can also instruct 8aweek to stop tracking websites at any time by selecting the “Logging Disabled” option.
  • View Habits - this is the most important feature of 8aweek. Click this button to view total Internet hours spent in the past 24 hours, past 3 days or in the whole week. From this section, you can optionally instruct 8aweek to stop tracking a particular website.

  • Read it later function - if you find an interesting website but wants to maintain work productivity at current, mark that website with the “Saved” button so you can read it later.

Based on the “View Habits” log, you can quickly track and find websites that you have spent most of your time on a daily or weekly basis. If you think that those websites waste too much of your time, add them to the “Restricted Sites” list and change your “Daily time limit for restricted websites” accordingly. I recommend that you use the “Block Mode” and limit the usage of “Snooze” to maintain productivity all week. Overall, 8aweek is one of the simplest ways to track your internet browsing habits and if used wisely, can be a useful tool to increase personal productivity. Try 8aweek today!
