I have had my Dell laptop 3 years and this problem only started after I downloaded the Excel 2007 compatibility package. I uninstalled the Sonic Update Manager and (so far) its absence has not affected anything else.

sonic audio module
sonic copy module
sonic data module
sonic express labeler
sonic my dvd plus

are these ALL that I need…I don’t need to worry about the fact that I removed the sonic update manager?

Thank you so much,I’m so glad I came across your website/forum. You are 100% correct & the key to my success are the words “isuspm” or “issch” that you said to look for, never would have figured that out, you ROCK !! I also went ahead & downloaded latest Windows installer cleanup utility & there were 5 Sonic files listed which I deleted. Re-started my computer (windows XP), and it worked perfect, so happy to have my baby back! You are AWESOME, and I thank you so very very much,now I’m hooked and checking out all the other tech tips on your website, very very cool.

FYI: Before I found your tech tips, I found another site you should check out, mlin.net. Mike talks about this problem on his forum & suggested a free program he is offering called “StartUp Control Panel” instead of running the MSCONFIG command. It is sweet, so easy to use, simple but very effective, and really designed for those of us that don’t have alot of experience with the system configuration startup utilities.

Had no problem until I installed Nortons and then up it popped. A friend is having the same problem. I will try your solution and if it works give it to him. Tried to go though Norton but no answer from them.

have same problem contacted dell they said it was virus and they would fix it for 120. i said no thanks its there garbage problem and they want us to pay for thier mistakes

I have a Dimension 9150 running XP. The Dell site studiously ignores the widespread variants of this “update” problem, so far as I can work out.

I believe what triggered my case was installing Norton Internet Security 2010 over the 2009 version and using a few of the utilities prominently featured with the 2010 version.

It’s all an absolute pain.

If you are stupid like me and tried to delete sonic updater not knowing what it was and how much aggrevation it was going to cause and you have tried the steps above with no luck, im not sure about the steps of how i got rid of this annoiance but ill try!
-click on start then run
-type in MSCONFIG
-not sure on which tab you click on but one of them will say something about restore points
-select one of you restore checkpoints that was before this problem presented itself out of stupidity
-and after a short wait everything was back to normal!
-Oh yea this will only work if this problem happend in the near past because your computer only saves your restore points for so long luckally i still had 2 days still left on the list till i was SCREWED!

Thanks so much! Your advise was very helpful. I was able to remove Sonic Update Manager from the Control Panel easily and this annoying problem has finally disappeared!
