Save and Manage Browsing Sessions in Opera

Posted on May 31, 2010 at 6:09 am

Opera 10.5 now has the ability to save browsing sessions directly within Opera without installing an Opera widget. You can save multiple sessions that may even include tabs from multiple open Opera windows.

NOTE: The menu bar in Opera can be hidden and is hidden by default when you first install the program. The menu bar can be toggled using the Show Menu Bar option on the red “O” menu button, or the Main menu (if the menu bar is hidden), or on the File menu (if the menu bar is shown).

Show Menu Bar option on main menu

In this post, we talk about options accessed from the File menu on the menu bar. If you have the menu bar hidden, you can access the same options under the Tabs and Windows option on the red “O” button or Main menu.

To save the current set of open tabs, select Sessions | Save This Session from the File menu.

Save This Session option

The Save Session dialog box displays. Enter a name for your session in the Session name edit box. If you want these tabs and windows to be displayed every time Opera starts, select the Show these tabs and windows every time I start Opera check box.

When you save a session, Opera can save the open tabs in every instance of Opera that is open. You may have tabs open in two separate Opera windows and you may want to save all of these tabs as a session to be opened again as a future date. If so, leave the Only save active window option unchecked. If you only want to save the tabs in the currently active window, select the option so it is checked. Click OK to save the session.

The next time you open Opera, you can access saved sessions by selecting Sessions from the File menu. Your saved sessions are listed in alphabetical order at the bottom of the submenu. The tabs you saved in the session are opened after the currently open tab in a new Opera window. The tab that was active when you saved the session becomes active again.

Accessing a saved session

To manage your saved sessions, select Sessions | Manage Sessions from the File menu.

Manage Session option

The Manage Sessions dialog box displays. You can delete sessions you no longer need here by selecting a session from the list and clicking the Delete button.

NOTE: Be sure you want to delete a session before you do so. There is no confirmation dialog box that check to see if you are sure you want to delete the session.

To open a session from here, select the session and click the Open button. If you want to open the saved tabs inside the currently active Opera window, select the Open tabs inside current window check box.

If this option is off, the tabs are opened in a new Opera window, in the same manner as when you select a save session from the menu. The Manage Sessions dialog box closes automatically when you open a selected session.

Saving sessions is a very handy feature if you do a lot of research on the web and you want to save your tabs for future reference or if you have groups of websites you visit at once.
