How to make your own Photoshop patterns

Posted on March 1, 2009 at 5:50 am

Patterns, like layers, are basic Photoshop fundamentals that folks who bought the software should know.  Patterns are mostly used for backgrounds but they can also be used as smart objects that you can paint in your canvas.

You could think of them as tiles or brushstroke patterns depending on how you will use them.  Below are steps that you can use to quickly create your own pattern.

Step 1: Create a new Photoshop document

Step 2: Create the content of the pattern on a portion of the canvas.  In the sample below I used the text tool but you can create your own using brushes and other painting tools.

Step 3: Select the pattern and then click Filter > Pattern Maker:

Step 4:  Click the Generate pattern button to see the output.  Adjust the parameters like width and height to match your desired output.  Click the Generate Again to see other patterns as you change the parameters.

Step 5.  Save the pattern by clicking save button.  Give it a descriptive name then click OK.

You’re done! You should see the pattern’s output on the canvas that you are working on.

Remember that you can use other sources as patterns.  Instead of texts, you can use a portion of your image or even create one from scratch.
