How to turn your MP3’s into ringtones for your mobile phone for free

Why waste $2 or more to purchase those ringtones from your mobile phone carrier, when you can simply take your MP3 collection and convert it yourself! It’s ridiculous to spend any money at all to get ringtones for your phone, especially if you’re already paying to download MP3’s from iTunes, Amazon, etc. There are a couple of sites that make the process very easy, so you don’t need very much technical knowledge to do it yourself.
The best site I have found from experience is Mobile17. These guys make it so simple that your grandmother could probably do it (maybe). Also, they have the most support in terms of phones, ringtone types, and carrier services. They support Apple, Kyocera, Motorola, LG, NEC, Sharp, PalmOne, and just about any other phone you can think of. If not, you can send them a message and they’ll add support for it.

They support all the major wireless carriers and even support International carriers such as Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2, NTT DoCoMo, and many more! Also, depending on the phone, they support 3GP, Polyphonic tones, and Mega/Real/Super tones.
However, the best part about this site is that if you can receive text messages on your phone, you can create your own customized ringtone and have it sent directly to your phone! No downloading or connecting the phone to your computer, etc!
Click Get Stated to begin and fill out the information on your phone, service provider, etc, etc. Get your activation code and login. First thing you’ll have to choose your exact phone model. I have an LG and was happy to find it there!

Now from the menu on the right, you can choose whether you want to create ringtones, graphics and photos, or animated GIF’s.

The grayed out ones cannot be send to your phone, but the beige ones can. Go ahead and choose which one you want to create. On the next screen, you’ll have to choose the level of service, free or paid. If you want the ringtone immediately, you have to donate some money. For free, you simply have to wait. When I went to the site, the wait time was 869 minutes with 5809 people ahead of me! That’s about 14 hours, but not too terrible if you simply do it at night and by morning you should have your free ringtone.

Next, choose the delivery method, which is either download through phone web browser, receive it in a picture message, receive it as an attachment to your phone, or email the file and try to upload it to your phone yourself.

Next, choose your MP3, M4A, OGG, WAV, or WMA file, type in the Artist and Track Info and choose at which point you want the song to play from. Most ringtones are 10 seconds or less, but you can go all the way up to 40 if your phone supports it!

And that’s it! The file is uploaded, converted, and after 14 hours it will be sent to your phone! If you really like the service, the donation fees are very small and I would rather give my money to these guys than my phone carrier.
Any questions, post a comment!

I am so glad to hear that there is a completely free ringtone service. Although, I am a little hesitant to use the service based on the screen shot you gave of an average wait time of 846 minutes (or 14.1 hours); of course, if I wanted to support the 5655 persons ahead of me I could pay (i.e. donate) but then it wouldn’t be free would it? I would say if you want an absolutely free ringtone the only way is to use some sites that give the first ringtone free and then pay like $1.00 for everything after that. I know http://www.Jamster.com and http://ringtones.anythingformycell.com do this. I’m looking forward to more comments on this from anyone. Thanks for the insight.
Mobile17 isn’t that great – I have a samsung with Sprint and Sprint charged me $10 for the ringtone process and then the files Mobile17 sent had problems and wouldn’t download. Would not use their service – money and frustration for nothing.
i used this website and i think it’s awesome, but the ringtones don’t work
it keeps telling me i need a “handler,” so i tried shortening the tone and it still doesn’t work. the backgrounds work though.
