Its about time it worked in windows 7 as well, just delete the temp folder and its fixed. Microsoft didnt even have this solution stampled

The second option worked like a charm! I was so frustrated and spent hours trying to figure this out on my own. Followed the steps to delete the correct folders and files and BAMM — FIXED! Thanks so much!

Do I even really need the Search Indexer service? Can it be disabled? I use Google Desktop for searching, so I don’t think I will waste my time on Windows search features.

I cannot find the registry as you’ve described it (I am on Vista) and since the indexer isn’t working the first option didn’t work…

Thanks for explaining how to accomplish each possible fix in detail! I found a few sites offering similar solutions but they didn’t explain things so that us non-techies could figure it out.

Superb!! It worked. Before every time I moved a file, I would get this search indexer error. After seeing your site i used the first step and i clicked restore defaults (as the upper one was shaded out). Then a restart and voila!!!!!! no more errors and my system performance has increased a little bit !

In the article you write “If for some strange reason you are not able to select anything on this page”

The strange reason is that the Indexer Service is currently stopped (which isn’t surprising, given the nature of the error message).

Follow the instructions given further down to find the Windows Search service in the Control Panel and START it up again. The options will reappear (at least until it crashes out again!)
