How to determine iPhone, Blackberry OS version
Posted on April 26, 2009 at 5:13 am
If you own an iPhone or a BlackBerry, which about half of the world does, there may be a time when you need to determine the OS running on your smartphone.
This can be useful info if you need to update an application installed on the phone, but it requires a certain version of the OS in order to run. In this post, I’ll quickly go through the methods to determine the firmware version for your iPhone and Blackberry OS.
Determine iPhone OS Version
There are two ways to find the version of the OS running on an iPhone: either on the iPhone itself or via iTunes.
If you want to do it through the iPhone, click on Settings and then General.
Now click on About and you should see a entry called Version. Next to that is the current iPhone OS version running on the device.
It’s also really easy to check via iTunes. Just plug in your phone and when iTunes detects it, click on the entry to get a summary:
You’ll see the Software Version listing at the top next to the picture of the iPhone.
Determine BlackBerry OS Version
Depending on the version of the Blackberry OS you have installed on your phone, you may have to go though different menus to get the same options.
If you phone is running version 4.0 or later, you can go to the Options menu and then choose About.
On some Blackberry phones, you have to first go to the Tools icon and then click on Settings and then About. Either way, you need to get to the About screen to find the OS version.

Hopefully, you now know what version of the Blackberry or iPhone OS you are running! If you need to figure this out for a different phone, post a comment here and I’ll try to help! Enjoy!
