How to create your own personalized domain email address for free

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get your own personalized email address like

HiJuile@WillYouMarryMe.com and send that off to your girlfriend! You would definitely get some brownie points for that one! Well, if you’re looking for a custom email address with a custom domain name and you’d like it all for free, there is really only one option at this time, AOL’s My eAddress.

Personally, I still don’t understand how it’s free or why, but it’s pretty cool! Through this service, you can either grab a popular custom domain name like whatever@totallyintotravel.com or someone@majorgolfer.com, create your own new domain which can be whatever@thenameyouwant.com, or bring your current domain over to use with AOL. The last option doesn’t really make much sense to me, but the first two are very nice for anyone who doesn’t want to or know how to register a domain name and configure the email settings.

If you’re creating your own domain, you can choose from both .com and .net domain suffixes. If you don’t like any of the popular configured domain names, click on Click here to Create a New Domain or Bring Your Own Domain right above the FAQ section.

To find an available domain name, enter the desired name and click Search. Remember, in order to have an email address with ANY ending (like AOL.com) that domain has to be registered on the Internet with ICANN, so you can only pick a domain name that is not already taken by someone else. It’s as if you were to go to GoDaddy or NetworkSolutions and try to register your own domain name.

You might ask how this can possibly be free then? Well, I’m asking myself that too and the only reason I can come up with is that AOL pays the $5 or $6 fee to register the domain for you because it retains ownership of the domain. AOL will remain the official ICANN registrant and simply have internal AOL records that link you to the domain. So this means you really have NO RIGHTS over the domain. If you want full control of your domain name, you should register through the above mentioned sites and pay the fee.

Also, at this time you cannot use your domain for web hosting, though that is a feature that will be coming soon. The only thing you can do right now is have your own email address and add or invite others to use your domain name. So, for example, if you create a domain named thejohnsonfamily.com, you can create email accounts for everyone in your family, i.e. mary@thejohnsonfamily.com, etc, etc.

Once you find a domain that is available, go ahead and fill out the information to register the domain. You’ll also have to give your cell phone number by which AOL can verify who you are by sending a text message with a pin to your phone. Enter the pin that you receive and you’ll now be able to log into your account.

You can now login into AOL web mail (use the full email address) and start sending and receiving messages. You can create up to 100 accounts on your personalized domain for family, friends, or business associates.

So go ahead and have fun! I just created my own email address, tested it out and it works fine! Really don’t understand how this is possible, but it’s definitely really cool! Enjoy!

Hmm this information is a bit wrong.

Many other services are there. 2 of the most popular are google apps which not only provides you email but also many other features and is really powerful.

The other one is WIndows Live Domains which i have not et tried but will try it soon.

But i have heard from my friends that it is also nice(not as google apps)

Hey Siddharth,

That’s actually not true…Google Apps for domain assumes you already HAVE YOUR OWN domain that you can then migrate to Google Apps! If you DO NOT already have a domain, you have to purchase one…read this!

So actually, the AOL service is the only one out there that I could find that actually registers your domain for no cost to you! I think same thing applies to Windows Live Domains!

Yes they do take complete ownership of your domain, so that’s why it probably not worth moving a domain you already have to AOL. Just use this service to get a free domain for fun or for your family.

Hi there, i’ve been trying to create a new domain with AOL but it seems like i have difficulties or have they taken out their free service for personalise email domains??

During Step 1: I can’t seem to go the the page reflected in your screenshot ‘create a new domain’. Basically i was only brought to the ‘bring your own domain’ page only.

Any one can help on this?? Thanks!!

The “Create a New Domain” option is no longer available at myeaddress.aol.com. Guess the domain registrations were costing them too much for the response they got. I had spent a couple days coming up with possible domain names and checking that they were available and then I was going to create it through My eAddress at AOL – but the “Create a New Domain” option is no longer available. Argh!

Another mentioned Google Apps. You don’t get to create your own domain for free. Even if you apply for the “free” account, there is a $10 to GoDaddy for the domain registration. During the process for creating a new “free” account, and after getting it to find a domain that is available (they’re not accurate and will tell you a domain is inuse when it is not), you’ll see on the next screen “One year domain registration for $10″. Well, that’s not free.

Office Live Basics is free and you still get to create your own name for the domain (if it isn’t used already) but you’re screwed trying to get access to your e-mail acocunt (which is a Hotmail/Windows Live account). DAV access to those free e-mail accounts got discontinued back in Nov 2004. If you want to use a local e-mail client but are unwilling to use Outlook 2003/2007 and install the Outlook Connector (which isn’t compatible with pre-2003 versions of Outlook), and are willing to take a chance on connectivity (lots of OL2003/2007 users using Outlook Connector are posting in the newsgroups about not being able to connect) then you’re screwed. With the *free* Office Live Basics account, you either have to use their webmail interface or use OL2003/2007 with the Outlook Connector plug-in. I still have OL2002 and am not paying to upgrade to OL2003/2007 just so I might get access using their Connector plug-in.

This can be really bad. I signed up over a year ago. Now aol has the domain name, won’t allow web hosting, renewed name even though it hasn’t been used in over a year, and won’t sell it.

Abel, the site does not charge any money, but they own the domain name, that’s the major downside.

there are no such things as free domain! LOL.

If you want to create your own email address, ie: whatever@whatever.com, you MUST buy that particular domain.

The “free” aol My eAddress is no longer available!Here’s what it says about trying to sign up:

“On January 1, 2009, AOL discontinued support for free My eAddress domains created by users.As a result, your mailbox and any other mailboxes listed under these domains are no longer able to send or receive new mail.You can still access messages already in the mailbox.” etc, etc.

But if you have rights to the domain name that u want u can still create an account. I tried going to http://www.myeAddress.com, that is what I found.

If you want to have your own domain for free with AOL well your domain CAN NOT have more than 8 letters other wise you will have to pay then you use. it’s really suck but still it’s better then nothing.

Another option for fully personalized and free email addresses is http://www.uniquemail.com. A lot of their options are paid (because they involve a new domain name I guess), but if you scroll down the list of results there’s always a free option available.

I signed up for another free email address at http://www.uniquemail.com only a couple of days ago. Same as before – many paid options (because you’re getting a domain name), but always a free option as well..

Maybe there’s only free options for “personal” email addresses (they seem to have a few options), but that suits me fine
