How to connect your Laptop/PC/Computer to your TV Come collegare il vostro Laptop / PC / computer al televisore

Posted on June 26, 2007 at 8:50 am Posted on Giugno 26, 2007 at 8:50

I'm writing this post on how to connect your PC or computer to a TV because last week I returned from a trip in India and wanted to show all of my pictures and videos to my family from my laptop onto our HDTV, but unfortunately I did not have the correct cords and so after fumbling around for 30 minutes trying to connect my computer to the TV, I had to tell everyone that they would have to wait till the next weekend! Pretty annoying considering the times we live in, it should be quite easy to connect the two together!

So here's a quick walk-through of all the methods that I know (if you know any more, please comment) to connect a laptop or PC to your TV: Quindi, ecco un breve passeggiata-through di tutti i metodi che so (se si sa qualcosa in più, si prega di commento) per collegare un computer portatile o PC alla TV:

1. S-Video – This is probably the most common method out there currently because an S-Video cable is cheap as heck and just about every TV under the sun has a S-Video port. 1. You'll have to make sure you laptop is equipped with this port. Remember, there are two types of S-Video cables: 4-pin and 7-pin . Most laptops and PC's are equipped with a 7-pin port, so if your TV only has a 4-pin S-Video port, then this method will not work.

2. VGA – If you have a HDTV, then you will be better off connecting using a VGA cable. 2. It gives much better quality than S-Video and as with S-Video, the cable is very cheap. You usually won't find a VGA port on regular TV's though, so this option is if you have an HDTV.

3. DVI - DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface with “digital” being the key word there. 3. The digital signal will give a higher quality picture than either S-Video or VGA. Of course, your computer will need to have a DVI connection and your TV will need to be an HDTV. This cord is definitely not cheap, it ranges anywhere from $40 to $80.

4. HDMI – Using HDMI will give you the best quality by far. 4. No computers that I know of yet have HDMI ports, but you can get a DVI to HDMI cable to connect it to your HDTV. HDMI is compatible with DVI. HDMI è compatibile con DVI.

5. Scan Converter Box – This is the last method that I could think of and it involves using a scan converter box, which takes a VGA signal and converts it into S-Video or component video. 5.

Here's a graphic I created with some pictures of the various cables: Ecco un grafico che ho creato con alcune immagini dei vari cavi:

    Hi Peter, Hi Pietro,

You could try to do a few things for starters: go ahead and change the resolution on your laptop to something lower, maybe 800×600, sometimes that causes the problem. You can also change the color scheme to 24-bit if it's set to 32-bit and see if that works.

Also, you said you are changing the TV to PC mode, but what about the laptop? Sometimes, you have to press FN (function key) and F8 (the CRT/LCD) key to have the signal sent out to the TV.

Let me know if these three things work or not! Fammi sapere se queste tre cose funzionano o no!

    Thanks Grazie

Dude, the easiest and by far the best way I have seen is to set the advance timings on a pc just right and use a vga to scart cable (Maybe with audio of you don't have the pc hooked up to an audio system of some sort). This is a nerdy approach but you get superb results for little money with stuff that's standard on both the TV and PC. You can also get dvi to s-video or CVBS to make it happen.

One on my favorite ways is to just stream it to my TV via a computer that is hooked up via DVI. This way you can have a silent, efficient and small htcp that can stream over your wan.

Kris, you have to lower the resolution even more. Basically, if your load up screen is showing up and then disappears once Windows starts loading, it's a resolution issue. However bumping the res way down below to 1280 x 768 provides a stable image – Anyone have similar experiences? (The TV rates as Full HD) Crap HDMI cable? (admittedly a no-name cable). Thanks in advance! Grazie in anticipo!

I bought a cable on ebay, 25ft long, all in one – 3 on one end (red, white, yellow) and the other end is s-video and audio jack. I plugged everything in correctly, Id like to think I did (?), hit the FN & F4 key at the same time, what is on my monitor is now on my tv. I found that you cannot have the movie running first, just have windows desktop showing. Then, if you want to load a movie, just use your mouse, turn on movie from your movie player. So far, I have gotten the movie to load this way.

My problem is no sound. I still have the sound coming out of my laptop speakers. I have tried to change the audio settings so it does not play through laptop speakers and goes through headphone plug, where audio plug is plugged in, but still no sound coming out of tv.

What am I missing? Is there perhaps another FN key or something that will send the audio out too?

  128. RQ007 said on :

I tried to post another comment so if this is a duplicate – sorry.

After trying and trying here is what I came up with to get my sound to work. If you have speakers plugged into your laptop, unplug them. I had a speaker plugged into my usb port, and had the wire plugged from tv to headset jack – as soon as I unplugged my usb speaker, the sound went to the television.

Hope this helps! Hope this helps! :)

    Hello everybody, Ciao a tutti,

To have audio and video at same same on tv (digital one) you just have to connect the cable vga male/vga male to your computer and to the Tv ( PC In – see details of your tv on manual specifications).
For the audio is the same, you need a audio cable 3,5jack/3,5jack and connect it to your computer ( on the sound green ) and to your Tv on the audio for PC next to the vga cable.
Dont use the audio-in red and white because those are only for AV source (ex. a camera)
I hope have help you to have your tv as a pc monitor for games or surfing the net.

Those of you who are struggling to get audio sound but are still searching for right cables that connect their incompatible lap tops and TVs, I have found a solution. I connected my laptop headphone to a small home FM transmitter that can be bought for about $20 and now I tune the audio in FM Radio. While I am still searching for the correct cable this method helps me to watch movies and videos from my laptop/pC on any TV that can be connected to my PC/Laptop. I use the same transmitter to play music in my car from my Ipod. At home all of us can hear the audio in FM radio and cell phones with radio when I play music from my laptop or Ipod. I found this to be the cheapest solution!

  203. geraldz said on : ha detto:

    1. 1. If you have a new laptop with HDMI, this is your best bet. It is a digital signal and includes both audio and video. You can buy these cables at WalMart.

    2. 2. DVI is also a digital signal but it does not have audio. You will have to purchase a separate audio cable.

    3. 3. VGA/SGVA is probably your best bet. Although it is an analog signal, it provides very high quality high-definition video. Most VGA/SVGA cables don't include audio, except for a specialty PC to HDTV cable sold by PCTVCables.com. On HDTVs, this is usually called “pc input.”

    4. 4. S-video and composite video cables only carry standard-definition quality video. And you'll need a separate audio cable. I have found that a 4-pin s-video cable will work even if the jack on your computer has 7 pins.

  205. geraldz said on : ha detto:

Gil – the VGA/SVGA cable will usually detect your HDTV because it carries the EDID (”plug and play”).

According to Intel, your graphics controller will allow you to select the highest resolution that is available on both your PC and HDTV.

    Hello Everybody!!!

I'm trying to connect a desktop PC to 36in LCD TV. I tried to use a splitter “Y” female to two male outputs the TV worked fine, but unfortunately my PC monitor was blurry and lost a little brightness. (I think that the signal was lost because it's not very strong and two screens are too much).
Also, one of my friends said that I can damage one of the screens by using a VGA splitter.

I want to buy a VGA PCI video card with one VGA output, but some people say that it wouldn't work because the PC would recognize only one video card either on-board or installed PCI video card. The only way to do this is to get a dual VGA PCI card, but it is a little expensive with the comparison to single VGA video card and I already have one on-board video card for one screen and if I buy another single VGA would it work? By the way I'm also using 25ft long extension cable from my PC to the LCD TV screen. I haven't tried connection audio 3.5MM cable but eventualy I will. My main problem is how to connect PC to TV? and my question is – I already have a video card in my PC (I hope I do) and if I buy a single VGA PCI video card would I be able to view both screens or not? Is my computer would recognize both on-board video card and newly installed VGA PCI video card??? I'm confused:(

If anyone knows how to solve this please let me know!!!

    PLEASE HELP!!!

I need to know what cables I need to buy to connect them and where exactly I put these cables on each of my electronic devices. I would really appreciate some help. TIA

This is an amazingly busy thread. I have two other suggestions for guides about connecting PCs/Macs to TVs. One is on Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/video.....nnect_info

The other is on Jaman, the movie service:

    http://www.jaman.com/jaman-tv/

However all the guides overlook the issue of the remote control. Wireless is preferred and there is one made specifically for this purpose:

    http://www.hillcrestlabs.com/loop

    Good luck! Buona fortuna!

When I connected my Dell XPS laptop to my Toshiba 40″ HDTV with a HDMI cable, I got only video but no audio. I then pulled out the manual, and found out that I should connect the PC audio output(headphone) to the TV audio input. I did that, and still no audio! Finally I went to the on-screen menu, audio settings, and set the HDMI audio input to analog. That did the trick. I am happy!

The HDMI transmits both video and audio in digital format, but the PC is probably transmitting the audio in analog format still, hence the disconnect.

  283. Gable said on :

I'm not sure VGA to HDMI can work at all because the signals are too different. Unless you buy an actual transcoder box. Maybe someone more informed can respond.
