However, remember to de-select the other options and only have one checkbox checked at a time, otherwise it creates a separate file for each source.
You can also change the output format to WAV, prompt for a filename or automatically timestamp it, and choose the location for the destination files. Now start playing some music on your computer and press the red Record button. A little box will pop up and you should see the green line moving up and down. The nice thing about this program is that you can have your laptop sound on Mute or have your speakers turned off and it will still record whatever is being played.
Click Stop when you’re finished and then click Play to view your recordings. And that’s it! A pretty easy and cool way to record any sound or music off the Internet or from your computer.
If you don’t like the idea of cluttering up your browser toolbar, you can use a standalone program called MP3MyMP3 Recorder, which is also free. Like FreeCorder, this program also records whatever is being played by your computer’s speakers. However, unlike FreeCorder, this program requires that your sound NOT be muted. So if you want to record anything, it has to be playing and you have to be able to hear it yourself.
Also, by default, MP3MyMP3 tries to record from your microphone and not your sound card, so click on the Source button and choose Stereo Mix as the sound source. The recording quality for both of the products was very good and sounded just like the originals from what I could tell. Personally, I like FreeCorder better, but MP3MyMP3 is also a fine alternative.
Any questions or problems, please post a comment!

Its best to have as few steps as possible when you want to save streaming media. Its funny that this same problem has been around for over 10 years!
I downloaded the software and it shows on the toolbar of my internet explorer, but when I press the record button a small pop window opens which says Record but I cannot see any activity going on inside the box, I mean the waves and when u stop and listen nothing is recorded
Hi Anil,
You may need to play around with the Freecorder settings as shown above. There are three checkboxes that you can choose, so select each one separately and then try to record again. Also, can you hear the sound through your speakers? Let me know if this solves your problem. Thanks.
This is part of what I wanted. Now, I wonder - ‘if I down load what I want, will I be able to cut out the pieces I want, or just shorten the whole down to the part I want. That’s #1. And #2 is, is there a way of attaching that sound or sounds to a particular photo, document, HTML, or whatever? - so that when you open it it sounds - possibly repeating? Do you have any ideas on all this??
.mp3, .swf, .rm/.ra, and wma/wmv’s files can almost always be found in your “Temporary Internet Files” you just have to get there and copy it out before it’s done playing, because in some cases it gets deleted from there when it’s done playing.
the only trick is getting a streamed .rm/.ra onto your machine which is a bit involved
Cheers

Mp3MyMp3… The only source option that works for me is ‘What U hear’. I don’t believe it is recording from the sound card…too much static. Any ideas?
Also, I considered uninstalling and downloading the toolbar version. How do I unistall Mp3MYMp3? My OS is XP and I don’t see the program listed in those that can be removed?
Thanks
The feature i need is the ability to set the software to record a late night radio show while i am asleep. Does this software have that feature or can you recommend a solution which will allow me to set the computer to begin recording at a set time & then stop?
Dave - FreeCorder does not have any editing capabilities. The only thing it does is remove any blank sound from the beginning or end of a recording. As for attaching it to a document, you can really only insert sound into a HTML document. You cannot attach sounds to photos.
George - You can uninstall MP3MyMP3 by going into the C:\Program Files\MP3MyMP3 folder and clicking on uninstall. It also didn’t show up for me in the Add/Remove Control Panel.
Jocko - The software does not have the ability to schedule recordings, though that would be nice. The only way I can think of doing it is to use some kind of mouse and keyboard recording software that you can then set to repeat before the show starts. Check out vista-software.com.

record late @ night “unattended”
“Task Scheduler” maybe?
I haven’t played around with the XP “Task Scheduler”
but the old w98 one would schedule just about anything you wanted, but if the XP one still works the same or almost the same, that might be an option.
Cheers

Jocko,
Look for the free audio recording program called Audiograbber v.1.83. It will record from your audio card’s stereo mix buss (if you have one) via its “Line In Sampling” feature. It has a time scheduler as well, rips from CDs, saves as MP3 or .wav and has lots of other great features. It works great.
Pat
My sound card (SB X-Fi xtreme Audio) apparently does not have a “stereo mix” or “what u hear” function. I thought every sound card has this but apparently not.
I want to record internet radio streams using any of the software recoders available online but they don’t work without the “stereo Mix” sound source.
Anyone know if it possible to record internet radio streams without this functionality?
Is there any software that supplies this Feature?
Hi, Thanks I used MP3myMP3 that’s really Cool software, and of course your help is great.
mp3mymp3 is great except for the fact that i cannot make the recording volume go above “0″. i grab and slide the recording volume “knob” and, when i release it, it just slides back to “0″… help please!! thank you very much
WavePad works better if you have XP or earlyer
Help, I downloaded the freerecorder, and have been trying to record, it says it’s recording and you can see the pop-up but after about 20 minutes a window pops up and says it is windows is shutting it down?
Is there a time limit to how long you can record, or am I doing somthing wrong?
Thanks for your help
Hello again - I got it to finally record a longer time period but when I play it back it has a clicking in the background? Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks
Hi tgrosch, your problem with the clicking in the background might be because you have sounds enabled for Internet Explorer. You have to go to Control Panel, Sounds and turn off the default sounds for Windows.
This is most usefull to me to recording purpose
Downloaded mp3Mymp3… there is no “Stereo Mix” option anywhere in the program. It looks like the window is displaying funny.
Either way, it would NOT record the stream I was listening to.
I’ll try Freecoder next (didn’t want a toolbar, though!).
hey, I recently tried freecorder and in IE7, IE constantly said it has encountered a problem and closed itself D: and FF3 didn’t even let me install it due to no secure stuff or something ;~; I just tried mp3 my mp3 recorder, but the quality isn’t really that good D: can you help me? D:
When I record using freecorder, I ran into two problems.
1. It doesn’t record the whole song. Actually, just about 35-40 seconds on average.
2. When I choose to record in MP3 format, does it convert the streaming file format to MP3 or does it depend upon the source format? Some of my recordings were in MPEG format.
Cheers,
Bobbie
the main problem im having is that i can’t record outside music with my line in port or my microphone port. i have tried all three different settings but non of them seem to work. there is also no tutorial for recording ouside music.
Josh, what do you mean by outside music? Freecorder is only good for recording any sounds being played on your computer, i.e. streaming audio, etc. It is not to be used for recording sound from an external device, i.e. if you’re trying to connect a CD player to the line-in jack.
If you want to record sound onto your computer from an external device, then you need to use a program like Audacity.
Great info. I was just looking for a way to download some old NPR podcasts, and this is exactly what I needed.
1st,i tried to install the freecoder in ie8 nd ff but it couldnt get installed…..wat should i do.it has something to do with security.2ndly i successfully installed the mp3mymp3 only to discover that the stereo mix is an unknown location in my computer..i tried uninstalling using both the control panel and C:\Program Files\MP3MyMP3 folder but culdnt find the uninstall option.how do i uninstall it..ps someone should tell me of a software that can capture, save, record or download streaming audio for free with good quality and convienent.
thanks
Hi Dozzy,
The problem may be with IE8 since that is still a beta version. I would suggest trying FreeCorder on IE7 or Firefox 2 since it works in both of those. Also, to uninstall MP3MyMP3, you have to go into C:\Program Files\MP3MyMP3 and there is a file called Uninstall.
Let me know if you get it working.
I’ve been using StationRipper ( http://www.stationripper.com ) for a while now, to record internet radio.
Works well.
=JW=
I’ve the same problem as dozzy. There is no uninstall file…
this is going to be very kool because my friend and made up a song
once you make a song you wil be ale to burn it on to a cd
Hi Aseem;
I found another web stream recording program it’s called
“SoundTap” and you get it here
http://www.nch.com.au/soundtap/index.html
it’s part of a whole suite of programs but can be downloaded individually.
Hi,
Someone wrote above about using it to record songs from Songza and other places. Is this legal, and is there anyway you can get caught doing this?
Hi, I downloaded the my3mymp3 and installed it, but when i try to run it a pop up shows up and say ” setParamsNo sound driver is available for use” and i press ok then another pop up shows saying “getDiviceList; Cannot access divices” I cannot record anything… What is this problam im having?
mp3Mymp3 appears to be uninstallable. Since the suggestion above to go into program files was made, the proprietor of this garbage software must have removed the uninstall program completely. Of course, I was smart, I installed it through Add/Remove programs. Even without a modern windows installer, this should have provided me with the ability to eliminate it from my system. As if by magic however, mp3Mymp3 does not show up in the list. This is EXTREMELY suspicious. Download and install this chunk of crap that doesn’t work anyways at your own risk.
i’ve been looking for an external source audio recorder to record audio for a long time and the freecorder toolbar for firefox is by FAR the best and simplest program that i’ve downloaded for that specific purpose, and i’ve already tried at least 20+ different programs, and countless hours figuring out how to use each of those useless programs.
don’t even bother downloading the ‘mp3mymp3′ program, it doesn’t do anything at all.
I just went to the mp3Mymp3 page and there’s no indication of which windows version it’s for
but my guess is that it was written pre-vista which means that it will fight with or just not work at all for anyone using vista, the complete replacement of the audio stack and the way audio is passed to & from the sound card is what causes the grief.
I added the music and it will play to the end of the last slide without restarting which is great. I increased the file size in options as well.
I then save as powerpoint show so that it cannot be altered when opened. However when I email it to other people, the music will not play at all.

I FOUND AN EASY WAY TO RECORD JUST THE PARTS OF ANY SONG THAT YOU WANT! WHEN THE SONG GETS SENT TO YOUR “MY RECORDINGS FILE” RENAME IT, THEN RIGHT CLICK AND CLICK “PLAY” WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER WILL OPEN, IF YOU STILL HAVE INTERNET EXPLORER OPEN CLICK ON THE FREECORDER RECORD BUTTON WHERE YOU WANT TO RECORD AND THE STOP BUTTON WHERE YOU WANT TO STOP, THAT FILE WILL THEN BE SENT TO “MY RECORDINGS FILE” RENAME IT AND USE IT AS YOU WILL. (HINT BEFORE YOU HIT THE RECORD BUTTON ANTICIPATE A LITTLE A HEAD, TAKES A SPLIT SECOND FOR FREECORDER TO START RECORDING)
The Mp3MyMp3 doesn’t have stereo mix or wave mix as the source option, only microphone or line-in. Can’t record anything with it. Did I miss something?
One more question, did they get rid of the uninstall file for MP3 My MP3? It’s not in the program folder either. Can I just delete the whole folder and it’ll be clean? Thank you so much.
I have the best free method that doesn’t require many steps and is the most convient, quick and easy method I discovered myself. I use it to download free music (no not limewire, etc…) however the process is too long to type (short to execute though it just seems complicated) If you want to know how to do it contact me at Oetam10@gmail.com. I might not get back immediately however but I will respond.
I used Freecorder with FF2 and it worked great. I have never been able to get it to work in IE7 no matter what settings I use.
Now that FF3 has come along, Freecorder no longer will install in FF3.
I really wish the nice people at FC would work on those problems as I see most people commenting on here are having the same issues.
Hi,
Help! My Freecorder is acting up. It was working ok,
recently when I press record button while Firefox is streaming an audio, the “not recording” turns to
“recording” but the sound bar doesn’t move, so no
recording. I tested my sounds and it works fine. The
odd thing is recording works fine with the Freecorder
radio player on the toolbar. How can I fix it?
Thanks! J.J
Hi..
I just installwd freecorder, but it doesnt worked at all (three) setting. WHat should I do??? btw I am using Vista business.
I also installed mp3mymp3, it also didnot working. The source always say : Master Volume and there is no other option.
Help me plizzzz….

hi there.. i downloaded FreeCorder to record a very hard-to-find mp3 song (only available thru streaming). Though I was skeptical at first, but now I’m glad i downloaded Freecorder! The sound quality is very, very good! Keep up the good work, Computer Guy!
Hey i downloaded freecorder and it records fine when my music is actually playing out of the speakers but it records the noises my laptop makes too which is really annoying. How do i get it to record straight from my sound card or record while my music is on mute?
if you don’t want it recording your “other” noises aka system sounds then you have to turn off system sounds in control panel select the “No Sounds” setting.
cheers
Both freecorder and my mp3 work fabulous. Freecorder stopped working for me earlier today so I did the mymp3 and it worked fine. Freecorder is my reccomendation though. Hope I can figure out why it stopped working too.
I have just installed Freerecorder, I am using Firefox 3.0.1 and Vista Home premium.
I have the same problem as the posting number 2. I have tried the different settings, but still can not record.
I installed MP3MyMP3 and it does not work. I tried to uninstall as per instructions at posting 8. There is no reference to it in Add/Remove, there is no uninstall file in the program’s folder. How do I remove this program from my computer?
The problem with not being able to record is that I am unable to select “stereo mix”. After searching the net, it appears that the “stereo mix” is not available with Vista. I am unable to find a fix for this.
I got freecorder and i used for some songs but very often when i record the sound gets cut constantly. Why is this? Please help. Thank you.
I’ve been trying to figure out how to record an embedded audio for months. I just found this suggestion. I downloaded freecorder and it did exactly what I wanted. My system: XP-sp3, firefox 3.0.3, and my sound card didn’t allow other apps to record what was heard through my speakers.
Hey guys-
I’m just an “old” mom trying to use the internet to figure out to record just parts of songs on to a CD from my IPOD. My little guy plays baseball, and I want some music clips to get the boys fired up - but obviously can’t play the whole songs. Is this possible? And is if extremely difficult? I’m pretty good working on a computer, but this would be a whole new adventure for me. Thanks in advance for your advice!
Tried several different setups for freecorder toolbar in Firefox 3. and nothing. I am running XP media center sp2. I do have ‘no scripts’ running in Firefox. I have a program that reads or announces all windows actions and that voice is recorded if announcing the time or any other message. The only thing not being recorded is the streaming audio provided by freecorder toolbar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe creative soundcards have the Whatuhear option. The software that came with my card has a WAV recorder. However I use a shareware program called Goldwave. You can record an entire album as one file, then use the program to divide it into separate songs. Then you save each song in a different format such as mp3, wma, and quite a few others. You can set the bitrate (quality) of the recording. Plus you can play and edit the files with a ton of funky sound effects. Play it backwards, slow, fast, etc. I laugh like an idiot playing with this stuff. It does take time and practice, but a buck a song adds up awfully fast. I did this more before subscription service came out, but if I want a cd for some esoteric reason, I can easily get one of equal quality as a store bought version. $20 for a cd!?! C’mon!!
does freecoder work for recording songs on youtube ?
i tried to record it, but theres no activity in the box, just a straightline and nothing is recorded.
i downloaded the freecoder and i can not playback sounds.
it appears the sounds are being recorded but when play it in media player i get no sounds.
ANY ANSWERS?
MP3MyMP3 is not Vista compatible. Worked fine on a PC I had running XP, but volume and recording levels are all screwed up if run on Vista. Damn that OS!!
Freecoder-The recording box shows no lines. So no recording. What should I do?
hi.
i downloaded mp3mymp3.but the volume at which it is recording is very low.i can hardly hear it.and i m unable to move the bar at the side to make it reach the red mark.what to do?plz help me out of this…………..
Yesterday I recorded about two hours of beautiful classical music. The Freecorder visual pop up appeared and worked properly. After I stopped the recording and clicked on play, it was the recording I made. Today, the pop up recording feature is flatlined, nothing, nada, gar nichts. What happened?! What do I need do to return the recording to its working sate? Thanks
I have the same problem with freecorder like some of you. It seems it refuses to work with windows vista. I also use freecorder on a pc (working with xp) and it works perfectly. On my laptop (which has vista) it does not work.
Of course I could try mp3mymp3 but it seems like a waste of time after I read some feedback on that program. If somebody knows another an audio streaming recorder that works in vista I’d be glad to hear it.
Thanks
This thing f***** rocks man…
Thanks very much. i was tryin 2 get a song but could not download it.Now i got it.
Thank you so much…i just downloaded a song from s m a s h i t s. Its Chaand chal tu zara dheeme…i couldnt find it anywhere in downloadable format….thanks for ur info…i just downloaded it with freecorder
The freeware version only records at maximum quality of
96 Kbit/s, but if that’s suficient for you,
“FREE Hi-Q Recorder Version 1.92″ from Roemer software
(www.roemersoftware.com/free-sound-recorder.html)
is an EXCELLENT!!! product!!!! (For recording via line-in — as from the earphone jack of a radio or cassette recorder; or of material being streamed to your computer.
It’s NOT dependent upon the volume level of your computer speakers.(*) But it does of course catch any warning sounds, beeps, or clicks which your computer makes while you’re recording, so you may want to DISABLE most of those sounds in WIN XP control panel PRIOR to recording! *Also: DO NOT TOUCH or try to adjust the (speaker)volume control slide-bar (located on the startup-bar in the lower right- hand corner of your screen) whilst you’re recording - the !!!BEEP!! it makes everytime you move that volume-control slider - and THAT particular beep CANNOT be disabled from control panel! INSTEAD:
>Go to Start -> Run
>
>Type in:
>”cmd” [without speech marks]
>
>At the DOS prompt, type
>”net stop beep”
>
>If you should ever want it back, do the same except type
>”net start beep”
NB! This effect lasts until you re-boot the computer.)
Anyhow, FREEHI-Q Recorder is extremely straight-forward and easy to use!! And it gives you more control, allowing you to set and monitor the recording volume — (which some other similar freeware sound-card programs I’ve tried do not have any settings for!)
Supposedly, you can also set FREE HI-Q Recorder for TIMED recordings (I’ve never had any need to do so however, so I’ve never bothered to figure out those settings…)
Freecorder> I have noticed that if your recording software fails to record you need to right-click on the streaming audio player and reset the plug-in for the “Applian Audio Recorder Plugin” (it should have a check mark by it). Or if your stream is playing through WMP then you have to go through Tools> Plug-ins and make sure the above named plugin is checked.
thanks very much.a perfect solution
I downloaded MP3MyMP3 Recorder and when I open the “Source” panel my choices are limited to External Mic, Internal Mic, Audio CD, and Line In. Conspicuously enough, these just also happen to be only choices which appear in my Sounds and Audio Devices Properties panel under “Recording Control”. Have you any recommendations or am I just stuck with a bum sound driver or sound card? I have a Gateway Laptop w/ Windows XP.
Thanks!
