How to fix "Host process for windows services stopped working and was closed" on Vista

Posted on May 18, 2008 at 5:25 am

Don’t you just love crazy Windows errors? In this post, I’ll be going through some steps you can take to fix the “Host process for windows services stopped working and was closed” error message in Windows Vista.

I’ve already written about a few, such as “there no active mixer devices available” error message and “Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close” and “runonce.msn.com runonce2.aspx error in IE7. Too many to mention!

Sadly, most of these error messages are cryptic to the core and give you no insight into what the problem actually is. When getting the Host process error you might also notice that your Internet connection in Vista slows down considerably and you might have to constantly restart the computer to fix it.

This error seems to happen due to some incompatibility between a program on your computer and Windows Vista. It could be a lot of different applications, so you first have to determine which program is actually causing the problem. You can do this by viewing the Event Logs on your Vista machine. Here’s how.

First go to Start and go to the Control Panel.

vista control panel

Now depending on your view, you can either click on Administrative Tools if you are in Classic view or click on System and Maintenance if you are in Vista view.

system and maintenance

administrative tools

If you are in Classic view, you will see an icon for Event Logs and in Vista view you will see at the very bottom a link called “View event logs“.

view event logs

Now you’ll want to browse through the Windows Logs folder and view the Application and System logs.

application event log

You should now look for events with red X’s next to them and that have the word Error. Look for them around the same time or before you got the “Host process for Windows stopped working” error message.

Method 1

Some people have had this issue with ATI Catalyst Control Center and found numerous errors in their event log. You can then try to find an update for the program or uninstall it if it is not needed. You might also have this problem with Windows Defender, so try to find an update for that. Also uninstall useless HP printer software, and check for other events from Nero, etc.

Method 2

It could also be caused by an incompatible driver installed on Windows. This could be for any piece of hardware on your system. You can figure out if it’s a hardware issue by booting up in Safe Mode and seeing if you get the error. If it’s not there, then it’s definitely some driver that’s being loaded when Windows starts up.

Method 3

If that didn’t do anything, you might be having an issue with the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Windows service. If you starting getting this message after you did a Windows update, then BITS could be the culprit. You’ll need to follow the instructions in this Microsoft KB article on how to repair the corrupt BITS files.

Method 4

If you see an error in your Event logs that has EMDMgmt, then your issue might be caused by a thumb drive or some other external memory device, like a memory card reader. For some strange reason, you might have to connect the camera to your computer directly rather than using a card reader.

Method 5

This could also be caused by a faulty RAM memory stick in your computer. You might want to run a full diagnostic on your computer to make sure your RAM does not have errors on it. If you find a memory chip with errors, take it out and see if you get the error message. You can download a free app called Memtest86 to test the memory on your computer for errors.

Hopefully one of these methods fixed the Host process for Windows has stopped working. If not, post a comment and I’ll try to help! Good luck!

I, too, continue to be plagued with these cryptic errors in Windows Vista. A search of the event logs yields no clues.

I don’t understand how Microsoft can go about saying that most problems in Windows Vista have been fixed when evidence such as this runs rampant.

What is the technical novice expected to do when confronted by such impenetrable error messages? This is why I’ve been recommending Macs to acquaintances who do not possess technical skills.

I didn’t get the message once I turned the computer on safe mode. And I tried all the other methods but with no avail. When I turn on my computer in the regular mode, I still get the message. So according to you the problem lies with one of my drivers. How do I know which driver is giving me the problem and how do you delete it if it is no use?

    Thanks.

So, I had this problem and was on the verge of returning my new laptop to buy one that was sold with XP loaded. I called HP tech support and they had me install IE 8 Beta 2, restart, then uninstall beta 2, then restart. This takes you back to the IE version you had before. Apparently, this leaves behind some files that fix the problem. My computer hasn’t had the problem yet and it usu has buy now. Give it a shot.

I read this is an audio driver (Cmajor) problem, but Windows update and the dell cmajor battle over the newest version. I am on a Dell xps-m1330. There always seems to be a clash. However, it could be the printer, I guess, that is wireless and an HP. It doesn’t seem to prevent me from doing anything (that I am aware of) on my PC so I just continue with regular updates.and wait for a real fix.

  18. Remicks said on :

Thanks for this info. However, I think it would be more helpful if you described what to look for to determine whether your Error is svchost related or not. Simply, just add that the user should look for a line reading “svchost.exe_” when they click on the error and read the details below. The service name (which will appear where I put the arrow brackets) should be disabled by Googling the service to find out its full name and what it does, opening Services from the administrative tools menu, scrolling to the service and opening its properties page to Stop the service and Disable it.

For me, the service was hpslpsvc, which helped my HP Printer handle dynamic IP assignments (through DCHP) on my network. Solution: disabled the service and gave the printer and all the computers on the network a Static IP through MAC address binding.

  19. Remicks said on :

In my comment above, there should be arrow brackets containing the words “service name here,” but I assume they were filtered out due to html filtering. It should read: “…look for a line reading ‘svchost.exe_**Service Name Here**’…(which will appear where I put the double asterisks) should be disabled by Googling…”

This should prevent any confusion caused by the html filtering. Thanks!

My wife’s Sony Vaio went nuts and her desktop disappeared, screen went black, application shortcuts disappeared and multiple Windows applications would fail with the error ‘host process for windows services stopped working and was closed’. This is the first search link that I clicked on. As I was following the suggestion of removing useless HP drivers, leftovers from the previous owner’s printer, using the uninstall feature the screen did the exact opposite and her desktop returned to normal. THANKS FOR THE TIP!!!!!

    Hi there,

In the General tab under the events viewer I have the following explanation:

“The provider failed while storing notifications from the driver. The Virtual Disk Service should be retarted. hr=80042505″

Mind you, I do have 2 external hard drives inserted into the laptop USBs at the time this error came on my screen. Any idea what does the message mean?

You would figure that Microsoft has been in the OS business long enough that they would figure out how to resolve errors. I got the generic Host error and when clicking on the “Event log online help” found this…

    Results for: Microsoft Product: Windows Operating System; Version: 6.0.6000.16386; Event ID: 8210; Event Source: System Restore;

No results were found for your query. Please see Search Help for suggestions.

Why give an error if even Microsoft cannot figure it out on their own software.

well, i figured something out that makes the rebooting process stop. Go to START, type in CMD, press ENTER. type in Shutdown -a, press enter. This will stop the rebooting process to stop. After using the command prompt, Go to START type in services and press ENTER. Scroll down to DCOM server process launcher and right click. Then click START. This will restart the DCOM process. Also scroll down to Plug and Play. right click and click on start. It seems that both the DCOM and Plug and Play work together somehow. I think Plug and Play and DCOM has to do with the audio because I noticed that the audio stops working after these error messages come up. Thats all I know as of now.

Hi, I tried to delete something in order to fix this host process problem and my computer is not working. Another site I read suggested I delete some files, but looks like that was wrong. Can you help me fix it? Thanks in advance.

    Hi.

I am not a techie or even very good on computers but I found something strange in my svchost.exe file. Thought I would do a search for this hidden file in my hard drive. It was there 3 times in different folders. One was in the system32 folder, so I presume this is the one initiated. The others were earlier copies. I grabed one of these and copied it into another hard drive. Ok… now I do a permissions check on the original. Looks like someone has highjacked the permissions on this file.

I changed it back to give myself full permission. I can only hope this keeps it going now. Now for the waiting game to see if host process shuts down again. By the way. This shit started happening about the time I got a bug in my atapi.sys file. My avg paid version did not pick it up but I also used superantispyware and malwarebytes to find it and a couple of others that appeared. Thank you for your products.

  64. mik said on :

Ok.. now I have gone back to look at the virus vault in avg. It did manage to find the bug and lock it up. It says it affects the svchost.exe file and changes permissions. Thats what I seen and changed it back to my user details and the bug is fucked. It shuts down 3 services.

AtBroker.exe and smartlogon.exe were also effected. I am now going to change permissions on them also. Ok… AtBroker.exe had the permissions changed to “trusted installer” but smartlogon.exe was normal. So I have now taken back my full control on permissions. At this stage that host process shut down has not appeared yet.

Hey, I don’t have time to read through all the comments but I have over 10.000 “events” in my event viewer, how can I get rid of them the fastest way (delete doesn’t work)

Can somebody help me with this please? I keep getting this message but I can’t follow the directions to diagnose the problem because I can’t even get access to the event logs. When I try to view them the cursor wheel just starts spinning and spinning. This is what’s happening basically every time I try to open anything or do anything now. This computer is almost brand new…I’ve had it only about a month and I’m already disgusted with Windows Vista. I feel like I have a complete lemon. (This is an Acer Aspire 4730z by the way.) Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m not a techie, just someone with an average knowledge. Thanks, Josh treslowe@gmail.com

Thanks for the methodology tutorial on how to use the logs to sort this problem out. My issue turned out to be Method #5 related. I never would have believed that after 2 Year in my machine a 1GB DDR2 SODIMM would flake out for no reason (but it did). I didn’t use the “memtest86” application. I just used Vista’s memory diagnostics tool from the control panel’s administrative tools to confirm the bad ram stick. Also got to learn what SuperFetch is.

i am also having a problem in which earlier it came windows host process has stopped working and now suddenly all my files have got uninstalled and all my default programs also..in fact some of the shotcuts on my toolbar have disappeared!

  74. michael said on :

I found it was just a virus in my computer that seem to stop me from looking at files, changing programs, deleting programs and that host process file was always the first thing to shut down before everything else starting happening.

Seek professional help if you don’t have a savy computer friend. I used superantispyware, malwarebytes and regcure programs to help sort it out. I also reverted back to a earlier setting on my vista system. After all that I had to clean out the shortcuts that went nowhere and reinstall the programs that may have not been there in the earlier setting. Basically do a clean up of the system. Took me about 3 hours but it was good to play with all this again to remember how things work and keep up to date with system software.

Because this problem has just destroyed my computer. Every single file has been deleted and I suspect this was the problem. Apparently it has been preventing important security updates.

My laptop keeps saying the host process has shut down problem. I tried fixing it with the first suggestion but every time I click on the event logs button it always says C:\Windows\system32\mmc.exe the pipe state is invalid. I might know the source of the problem but I’m not sure if that’s the real case or not. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and it’s almost 2 years old. I’ve had my share of problems with it.

  83. Caleb said on :

I just found out I have over 6,690 events when I checked my event logs after restarting my laptop spanning clear from 4/24/2009 to now. Most of my critical ones(which are very few of them) are related to Kernel-Power. I don’t even know what that is. But the vast majority of them deal with Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider errors. Which I also don’t know what that is either. I really hope I’m not screwed here because I can’t afford to get a new laptop.

  84. michael said on :

    Hi Caleb.
I myself am a novice at computers also. I did however beat this problem but I am not sure how I did it.
Someone suggested to download and run two programs. SUPERAntispyware and Malwarebytes which were both free at the time. I also used Regcure from paretologic.com . One thing I did do before this though was to back date my system. It runs Vista and was capable of going back to a earlier setting. In my case it went back to about 2 months. I then had to reload some of the programs back on so as to pick up the mistakes in the shortcuts and icons.
At the time of the trouble I was getting a lot of virus attacks through my email. I have reconfigured the security on that. Its my belief it all started out with a virus that my then current AVG antivirus did not pick up on. All the best.

  86. kt said on :

Ok, I’m just happy I was able to get onto this website. Just to start off, I have Windows Vista Home Premium. So basically, a day or two ago I started getting an error message saying that “Host Process for Windows Services has stopped working”. When I clicked “Check online for solutions” it wouldn’t connect me to the Internet and said the page couldn’t be displayed every time I tried. I just clicked ok and everything was fine, a little slow, but fine. But yesterday, everything fell apart. I don’t know if any of this is related, but here’s what has happened:

-My computer was really slow yesteday morning and still today. When I tried to type stuff (particularly on the Internet), only a few letters show up because it’s really lagging I guess and I have to type Sooooo SLOOOWLY
-I started getting the host error message and my computer kept freezing
-After the message, my computer goes black and my taskbar at the bottom of the screen gets weird and now it looks different. It looks older and its white and the time doesn’t display. It also sometimes disappears completely until I restart. My internet is the same — it looks like an older version
-Most annoying problem: When I go on the internet, random ads pop up in the middle of me doing something (this never happens — my computer has so much anti-virus stuff and anti-spyware, I’ve never had a problem! My dad’s a computer guy so he keeps it up-to-date. I know I should ask him to fix this but he’s very busy and getting older and I don’t want to stress him out). Anyway, when I type something into google and click on a link, it takes me to some totally different advertisement page that sometimes tries to imitate the same topic I searched for! So frustrating! Also, when I try to go to the microsoft webpage for help, it says Internet Explorer can’t display the site .. it doesn’t redirect me like it does with other sites; it just won’t let me on microsoft.

I’ve tried everything! I did all my McAfee Scans, I did my Spybot Search and Destroy Scan and Repair, I even downloaded 2 other malware protector programs and did a scan but the problem persists. I’ve tried downloading updates, but it won’t let me because my computer won’t connect to the microsoft site. I’ve googled for help and tried to get advice, but I’m not sure of the problem and most of the time my internet takes me to some random site and I can’t get help. I was thinking maybe I installed a bad update, but I don’t think so because my last installation was almost a week ago, and this only started intensely yesterday morning. I’m guessing it’s a virus or spyware/malware?! I don’t know! Should I go back to a restore point? Start it up in Safe Mode?

I went into my event log in the control panel to see what was going on, and it looks like there’s an error with the Msi Installer but I don’t know what to do from there. I don’t even know if the host error is related to my internet problems or not. Here are a few of the details that come with the Host error message:

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: svchost.exe
    Application Version: 6.0.6001.18000

I hope I provided enough details, but just let me know if you need any more.

    Someone please help!

    Thank You!

  89. Ruud Azz said on :

    Hey, people.

I had the same problem with my Windows Vista.. And after days of looking through these forums, I finally figured it out how to fix this.

First of all, my problem was my sound kept on going and then the windows host process kept on coming up. All I did was right click on ‘My Computer’ then click ‘Manage’ and the ‘Computer Management’ window pops up. Then click on ‘Device Manager’ and then click on your ‘sound, video and game controllers.’ Then, right click on your sound drive, which in my case was ‘realtek high definition audio’ and select Properties. Click on the Driver tab and see if the “Roll Back Driver” is available to click. If so, select the Roll Back Driver, and that should restore the Driver when it was last working fine. Then, restart your computer and the problem should have gone.

    It worked for me!

    Have a nice day.

When I get to the part where it says “View event logs”, something pops up saying “windows needs your permission to continue.” So I click continue, and then a big red X appears saying, “This application has failed to start because COMDLG32.dll was not found. Re-installing this application may fix the problem.”

Whenever I start again with the steps above, the same problem occurs.

Please, Please, Please can somebody help me? I’ve had this problem for nearly two weeks now. It has removed Flash Player off my laptop, so I can no longer watch video’s etc, and I am unable to re-download it. It has also removed several other programs.

    Does anybody have a solution?

    SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA “Win32_Processor” AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99
    0×80041003
