That’s an interesting, though not always legal, way to find tracks. Just to add to the resources out there, here’s a good list of places that are offering free tracks and albums that are legal and places that still compensate the artists:

Everyone is right that sometimes this is just as bad as peer-to-peer downloading, even though it’s a lot harder to track.

@Rob – Yes it’s still “wrong”, but no it’s not illegal. If you can download it from Google, the RIAA can’t do crap about it. Google could get sued, but not you. It’s a great way to find free music.

Call me naive, but when you talk about ‘free music’ on the internet, do you mean to say that the indexed files found on websites are FREE and you wouldn’t get prosecuted for downloading from these sources. Surely it’s still tantamount to the same thing whether you’re downloading from P2P or a website’s directory – it’s not being paid for.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not brow beating, I am genuinely confused. The law is so complex on these matters and I’m hoping you can enlighten me.

Downloading music from Google is a good way to not get caught by the RIAA, but you can’t find the good stuff. If you don’t download a whole lot, you can use a peer to peer network.
