Comments on: “Duplicate name exists on the network” Windows error

This happens with WINS and Server 2008 R2, Duplicate entries show up in WINS on the server, one for Workstation and one for Server. Even though there is only one computer by that name Windows XP shows up twice. Not Vista, not Windows 7 , just XP. Oh wait XP isn’t supported via Server 2008…come on Microsoft.

I tried all three methods mentioned above, but I am still getting the duplicate name exists on the network error. What else can I do? Thanks.

I have problem with my laptop, the network says “Duplicate name exists on the network” but your solutions did not fix it. Any other ideas?

i’ve tried the three methods u’ve posted but still not working… is there any solution? my option is to reformat the computer to be able to reconnect to our domain. pls help me so that i will no longer do the reformatting. thank you!!!

I’m getting the Duplicate Name Exists on the Network, but none of my computer have the same name? I’m not really sure what to do. Should i just change the name of the computer anyway?

Thank You so Much for all of your help!! I’ve tried everything out there on the internet, your suggestions were the easiest and they simply worked for that duplicate computer name error!! I tried all three of them and the simplest one worked…i renamed the computer by right clicking on my computer tab. The error is simply gone!

I tried it and it doesn’t work at all. I recently changed my Linksystem router settings. Could that have played a role in this problem?

We had this problem at work last week. We tried all of these fixes, without success. We finally went into our DNS where both names were listed. We deleted one of them from there.
