Does your computer power on, but your screen is completely blank!?

I just fixed this problem on a guy’s computer yesterday and it can be one of those tough to figure out what is exactly causing the issue type of problems! Basically, you press the power button on your computer and the computer jumps to life and starts making all kinds of noise like it’s going to load up just fine, but alas, NOTHING HAPPENS! The screen is blank and you don’t even see the manufacturer logo pop up where you can press F2 or F12 to enter setup, etc, etc!

So this can be a little scary for some people who are not computer junkies. Thankfully, though this problem is not MAJOR, nothing is actually broken. The cause of this problem is due to the fact that when the computer first runs it’s own self check, it finds a problem with one of the devices connected to the motherboard and that is usually the RAM. Up to now, RAM is the only reason I have seen for this problem. Actually, that’s not true…on my Sony VAIO, I had a bad RAM SLOT!!! Yes, the actual slot for the RAM was not welded onto the motherboard correctly and so my computer would suddenly stop loading.

The easiest solution is to open up your computer and pull out the RAM chips one by one and try to see if the computer loads. This way you can figure out which chip might be causing the problem. Also, if you have more than 1 RAM chip in your computer, make sure they are the same speed and type (PC333, PC2700, PC3200, etc) because having different RAM chips can also cause this problem and it’s weird because it may run fine for months and then suddenly give you the blank screen!

If you have a Sony VAIO and you have this problem, you need to get it fixed by a professional. The laptop I had this problem on is fairly old, so hopefully Sony has fixed this issue now!

If you need to find another piece of memory and not sure which on your computer takes, you can go to Crucial.com and find the exact model and specs for the memory your computer uses. You might be able to find it cheaper at other sites, so you can get the specs from Crucial and do a search and see if you can find it elsewhere!
