Control Winamp Media Player using Bluetooth-enabled cellphone

Winamp is a great media player but traditionally we control it using a mouse or keyboard.  During the last few years we were offered user friendly products like the Media Center that comes with a remote control but this means you will need to shell out more money and you can’t run it without the Media Center addition to your XP or Vista.

This post will discuss some ways on how to control Winamp using a Bluetooth enabled phone.  There are two free software that I saw from the Net with this functionality.  One is Bemused and the other one is Winamp Bluetooth Control (WBC).  In this article I will use Bemused since I have a Nokia N70 phone and WBC only worked for SonyEricsson phones during my own testing.

Go to this link to get the software: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Telephony-SMS-GSM/Bemused.shtml

Unzip the file and you should see the list of features below from the README file:

- browse your music collection on your phone
- play any song supported by Winamp, including MP3s, CDs, MIDIs and playlists
- pause songs, stop them, fast forward and rewind, move around the playlist, and change the volume
- add songs to your playlist and use shuffle and repeat
- change the look of your player with skins
- stop or pause the music when you get an incoming call
- download music to your phone (WAV and MIDI formats supported)
- control Winamp 2, Winamp 3, Winamp 5, Windows Media Player 7 and PowerPoint Viewer 97

There will be a total of 4 files in the zipped folder:

The .sis file is a standard Nokia application installer.  Send it to your phone using Bluetooth or memory card reader.  Install it on your Nokia phone like an ordinary application.

The next step will be starting the Bemused process on the PC.  Double click the BemusedServer.exe file to start the wizard:

To start configuring Bemused, click the Next button on the lower right corner.  The next screen will ask the user what type of media player is installed on the computer.  Choose Winamp 2 or higher.  Enter the path to the program files of Winamp:

Note: you might need to change the path above if your Winamp is not in your C:\Program Files directory.

Then it will ask for the directory of the music files that you want to control using Bemused.  In this case I entered an album I ripped and saved to the TEMP directory (enter your own music directory path on this screen):

Enter the COM port used by Bluetooth to connect to your cellphone:

After clicking Finish you should be able to see the process screen like below:

That’s it! You should be able to use your Bemused application on your mobile phone to be able to remotely access the songs.  You can issue standard commands like play, pause, next song, etc.  This is very handy if you are far away from the computer.  Note that the Bluetooth’s advertised maximum range is 10 meters or about 32 feet.

Bemused can also control Powerpoint and Windows Media Player.  This is a very handy feature if you don’t have a way to run your presentation without using the mouse or keyboard.

do we need a bluetooth dongle for the computer?

Yes, bluetooth hardware is required on the computer and also on the phone to communicate. Most laptops since 3 years ago (like my Dell M20) have a built-in bluetooth on them.

for desktop pcs with no bluetooth you will need a dongle which should not be that expensive nowadays:
