Fix ActiveX control problem with Facebook picture upload

Posted on August 30, 2009 at 5:06 am

So if you like to upload lots of pictures to Facebook, you might have realized that there are two ways: simple uploaded or advanced. The advanced uploaded lets you upload a bunch of pictures into an album all at once, whereas the simple uploader makes you upload one picture at a time.

However, in order to use the advanced uploader, you have to install an ActiveX control from Facebook before it will load properly. If you’re having problems getting this ActiveX control installed or working, I’ll try to guide you through some steps to get it working properly.

Firstly, depending on the browser you are using, you should either get a pop up message or a bar at the top asking you if you want to install this control.

activex control facebook

(Firefox, Google Chrome)

facebook activex control

(Internet Explorer)

If you are not seeing this type of message, here are a few things you can try to upload your photos to Facebook.

Method 1 – Try different browser

The first thing you can do is to simply try a different browser and see if you get any of the messages above. When you do, make sure to click Run or Install This Add-on for All Users on This Computer.

If you are running IE, try using Firefox. If Firefox, try IE. Also, give Google Chrome a shot if neither works.

If none of your browsers are working, that means it’s a problem with the software on the computer. Read on to try more possible solutions.

Method 2 – Install the latest version of Java

The Facebook ActiveX control relies on the Java Runtime engine to work properly, so it’s best to download the latest version of Java also, then try again.

You can download the latest version of Java here:

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

After installing it, restart your computer and try to go to the upload page again and see if you get the message to install the ActiveX control this time.

Method 3 – Turn off Pop-up Blocker

Because the message is considered a “pop-up”, your browser might be blocking pop-ups from loading. You can turn of the pop-up blocker in IE by going to Tools, then Pop-up blocker and choosing Turn off pop-up blocker.

turn off pop up blocker

These are the only three methods that I currently know that can fix the Facebook ActiveX control problem. If you’re still having the issue, post a comment here about what you tried and why it’s not working. Enjoy!

I just had the uploader installed when I created a new photo album today. It installed and uploaded my pics. But then I could not see them in my profile. I could see the album in my profile, and that there should be pics there. Others could see them, just not me. I disabled the Facebook uploader add-on in IE, and now I can see them. Windows 7, IE8.

    This worked for me:

in IE8 goto Tools/Options, “Programs” Tab, click “Manage add-ons”. Select “All add-ons” in the drop down on the Left-side/middle of the screen.

Find the “Facebbok Photo Uploader” and make sure it is “enabled” (it was disabled for me)

I am having a similar problem– in IE, when i try to “download” facebook uploader no activeX bar pops up, only an install box. But the box doesn’t have “run” or “save” like the normal ones– it has “find” or “save.” If I save it, Facebook still says that the download is not found or installed on my computer. VERY FRUSTRATING! I have downloaded the newest Java (after deleted all old ones) and that didn’t help. I also disabled the pop-up blocker, but to no avail. Help!

I used to be able to upload photos until Facebook switched to the new uploader. I am running windows 7 and I.E. 8, I have the latest Java installed, Pop-up blocker is turned off, we even shut down the firewall for a short time. Facebook asks for administrator permission to install the add-on and it is granted. It puts up the “Loading” banner and then goes to sleep. We have not been able to add photos since the change!!! Please help!!

Everytime I try to add pictures, I create an album, then I get prompted:

The website wants to install the following add-ons ‘Facebook Photo Uploader’ from ‘Facebook, Inc.’ If you trust the website and the add-on and want to install it, click here…

However, I can’t click “here” because another prompt comes up in another box that reads:

["C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" SCODEF: 2504 CREDAT: 14337] caused a problem and is going to close.
Would you like to save a dumpfile?
    yes no

When I click yes or no computer freezes up and I have to close browser. Then I get prompted to send an error report to Microsoft.

I have loaded latest version of java, turned off pop-up blocker, tried to enable photo uploader in add-ons but didn’t see it there. How do I enable photo uploader if it’s not there?

    very frustrating…

Help! Ever since the new uploader became available I have been unable to upload iPhone pictures onto Facebook correctly. I use Windows XP and Firefox, the latest Java and have no problem with the pop up window. The problem is that the pics are all back to front and sideways, even though I corrected them when I initially uploaded them from my iPhone to my computer.

If the Simple Uploader option were still available I would use it, but it isn’t. There is also no way to correct the images once uploaded.

I agree with your method of trying a different browser. But isn’t it firefox don’t support ActiveX control?? or is there already a plugin for firefox that support this feature?

Dealing with active X control is really a hassle for me. I don’t understand why they even have to invent such thing. Sorry for being a little biased, cause I don’t really fully understand what active X is all about except that I often encounter errors related to it when I use certain sites like Facebook. Good thing there are ways to get around with them. Aside from the above tips, I used to follow this post when dealing with active x problems.
