Search engines use keywords to identify which sites match a particular search phrase. SEOs need to identify which keywords are searched for so that they can use those keywords and get found by the search engines and eventually by their target audience.

For example, if you want to optimize a website about “computer tips” you should see how many searches for the keyword are being submitted to Google monthly so you can have an idea if readers are looking for you or not. You can do that by going to external Google Keyword Tool:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Enter the keyword or phrase that you want to analyze then click Get keyword ideas:

You will see a tabular report of all related terms along with the search volume generated for the previous month and the average search volume.

In this report you will see if you are using the right keywords based on the Google search database. If you think you should target “computer tip” instead of “computer tips” then think again because the difference on the performance of each phrase is about ten times for “computer tips” (22,200 VS 2,400).

Also take note of the advertiser competition information, the longer the bar the more fierce the competition:

If you are a starting up a new web site and the competition is strong, it is a good idea to start with keywords with less competition then work on those higher volume keywords later.

Another cool feature of this tool is that it can show you the average cost each time a user clicks your ad on the associated keyword. To add the estimate cost per click (CPC) column on the report, go to the dropdown selection labeled “Choose columns to display” then click “Show estimated Avg. CPC”.

You should see the CPC column on the report:

Isn’t it a very convenient way to analyze your web site’s earning potential? This way you can earn more money by targeting keywords with higher CPC. Well, that is of course if you can make them come to your website. We will show you how to do just that in the future articles as we go into more in-depth SEO tips.

We have shown you here how to use Google Sets and Google Trends. Now from Google’s Tel Aviv team comes the Google Insights for Search which is currently in Beta stage: http://www.google.com/insights/search

The Google Insights let you see what people are searching for. The first time I used it, I chose last 90 days then I clicked the Search button. The output was a list of Rising Searches of the last 90 days:

Rising searches are defined as searches that gained significant growth from the specific time period. This makes sense if you want to know what keywords people are looking for. It is also a good way to discover popular things that you might not be aware of (i.e. in my case it is red tube, item #4, further search lead me to a porn site!).

To zoom in on a specific locale, choose the country and specific location you want to analyze. In the example below I searched for Texas, USA:

The top searches included search engines, youtube, and shopping sites like ebay and craigslist. The result is too broad as expected, so let’s see if we can narrow it down to a specific category:

To do this, choose a category on the Filter panel. I chose Lifestyles for the example below:

The output is now a little more interesting:

The top 3 searches are bible, names, pregnancy. Top 5 entry is “baby names”, while top 10 is “babies r us”. From this alone, I can conclude that Texas could be a good market for companies who sell baby stuff.

Now for the Rising searches… at the top is Shelley Malil, she must be a celebrity or something… this proves my theory that I could be connected to the Internet for the most part of my entire day Digging and still miss a famous person that everyone else is searching for.

After a Wikipedia research http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelley_Malil, I found out that Shelley Malil is not a woman but a man! He appeared in a movie called the 40 Year Old Virgin but people are digging him because he is a suspect for stabbing his ex-girlfriend at-least 20 times! Indeed gruesome but that is how he got to the top of the searched entries.

The best feature for me of this tool is it’s capability to map out the planet and color code the volume of search for a specific keyword. I typed in “Paris Hilton” and I got the interesting results below:

The darker the color of the map, the heavier the search interest. The Chinese seem to have less interest to Paris Hilton than the Australians. Makes sense, the Chinese have their own share of celebrities caught on their own homemade videos. From the list of countries, Honduras tops the list. Seems the Hondurans like to search for Paris Hilton more than the Americans.

Overall, Google Insights is a great tool for researchers and SEOs. The capability to view the regions (countries) and cities color coded by the search volume is an easy way to gain an insight to what locales are searching for any keyword. The capability to narrow a search via categories are very helpful on identifying a specific target market or audience.

Do people search for your keyword? Are you worried you are not getting the most out of your SEO campaign? Part of the reason why SEO campaigns don’t work is that they could be not targeting what the customers are looking for.

Keywords could get “obsolete” in a sense that there could be newer but related keywords that are not in your web page. Users using Google to search relevant web pages could miss your web site if they used the more recent keyword but not your keyword.

So how will you know if your keyword is still in the trend of searched keywords? Well, Google trends from Google labs is now online for you to use, still on its early beta-stage as of this writing but still pretty usable for our purpose.

Step 1: Go to the main interface: http://www.google.com/trends

Step 2: Enter the keywords you want to study. In this case, I want to compare keywords of Drum manufacturers: Ludwig, Pearl, Sonor and Gretsch:

Step 3: Click the Search Trends button to generate the trend chart (you should see a similar looking page like below):

From the results above, the red line on the trend chart is the volume of Pearl Drums. It stands out from the other known brands like Ludwig. This verifies the common belief that Pearl is the most popular brand of drums, at least based from the number of searches from Google.

Step 4: Adjust the Region and Date Range as necessary (In this case I want all regions and the trend of the last 12 months):

Step 5: That’s it! Use the data to your advantage.

Some of the things a web SEO might consider is to give more content for “Pearl Drums” since more readers are searching for it than the other brands. Just by looking at the chart, Pearl Drums clearly dominate the other three keywords:

If you are a vendor or distributor of a branded product like Pearl Drums you can sort the Regional summary by the keyword:

After sorting it by “Pearl Drums”, Australia came up on top followed by Canada and Ireland. If I am a SEO, marketer, or product distributor I will focus on these countries since it seems like the volume of searches are high on these countries.

The summary by city is also helpful, since it gives information on a specific locality. This lets local distributors focus on these cities instead of the whole country. If your store or website targets a particular city, putting the city on the keywords of your website will help your potential customers search you easier.

Also on the Languages summary, English is followed by Finnish. SEOs who want to grab this Finnish visitors for Pearl Drums then need to make sure that the localized Finnish translations of Pearl web pages are available.

This is only an example of what you can do with Google Trends. You can try your own keywords, focus on shorter term date range (i.e. last few weeks), or zero in on a locale for a deeper analysis. If you see that your keywords are going down on the volume, don’t despair, you may either up the ante on your marketing campaign or try to target the newer keywords that come up. They key is to use the keyword trend information to your advantage.

Today I am going to look at some very basic first steps in making sure that your band new shiny WordPress installation is search engine friendly. I am going to talk about just two things, but these are very important things, the most fundamental and arguably the most valuable from an SEO viewpoint.

Firstly we are going to talk about permalinks. When you first install WordPress, your permalink structure will create a page URL for your posts and pages that looks something like this:

http://www.yoursite.com/?p=123

This is far from optimal, we really need to change this to something that contains some tasty and readable information for the search engines to devour. So we will make some changes to have them look like this:

http://www.yoursite.com/category/post-name/

To do this, find the permalinks section of your blog options and make the changes in the screenshot below. Before doing so, make sure you .htaccess file has write permissions set, don’t forget to change it back afterwards!

Next we move on to page title, the default WordPress install will display a page title in this format:

Name Of Blog – Blog Archive – Post Title

This is terrible, since search engines rely heavily upon the page title. The attribute more weight to keywords at the front of the title, so we need to switch “Blog Title” and “Post Title” around at the very least. This is where it gets tricky and much will depend on a) the version of WordPress you are using and b) the theme you are using.

Basically you need to look in your header.php and locate a line of code (usually towards the top) that will look something like this:

<title><?php bloginfo(’name’); ?> <?php if ( is_single() ) { ?>  Blog Archive <?php } ?> <?php wp_title(); ?></title>

You then need to change it to something that looks like this:

<title><?php wp_title(’ ‘); ?><?php if(wp_title(’ ‘, false)) { echo ‘–’; } ?><?php bloginfo(’name’); ?></title>

And there we have it, nice search engine friendly page titles.

These two basic changes are the logical first step in creating a fully SEO optimised WordPress blog. Both of these simple changes will have a huge impact on your on the page SEO, they address 2 of the top 3 SEO factors (the first being the actual domain name).

In the screenshot above we can see the results of these changes, check the search engine friendly URL and the improved page title.

I am sometimes overwhelmed by the amount of content online – and I wondered – how much of this content is keyword optimized? In a recent quest to find the best article keyword density analyzer, I found a lot of sites that allow you to analyze your web pages, but not many that allow you to analyze the text PRIOR to posting it online. However, there was one gem in the vast array of so-called keyword density analyzers (http://www.live-keyword-analysis.com).

These days, it’s no longer enough just to create and post your content on the internet; it actually takes focus to create not only interesting subject matter, but making sure interested readers can easily locate your content in the boundless sea of information on the web.

So how do you ensure the subject matter will be found and read? The best way to ensure that your content gets attention is by using a keyword density analyzer, a type of search engine optimization software to maximize the results of a contents exposure on the web.

SEO basically is used to make sure that content posted on the internet is found by search engines spiders like Yahoo!, Google, and MSN- which makes it easier for browsers to find specific information. By using specific keywords in an article, a search engine will find the keywords from the article and instantly measure the keyword density to make sure it can be ranked by a search engine.

The most popular online tool for measuring the keyword density is a keyword density analyzer, which measures the percentage of keyword saturation. There are a lot of free seo tools that help in maximizing the results of keyword density, but this has to be the most effective tool to ensure that a website or keyword rich article will be found by the search engines.

The best thing about this tool is that there are so many websites offering their services for free, but most sites like Keyworddensity.com, only allow content creators to post the URL of their website to measure their contents keyword density. However, for those people who would rather see the results before posting their content to a website, there is a great alternative called Live-Keyword-Analysis.com.

This site does not ask for the URL to locate your posted content, it analyzes a contents density from an easy cut and paste box. Better yet, it actually measures the keyword density in real time, so one can edit their content while watching the keyword density saturation percentage increase. Once the keyword density rate is at an appropriate rate, the content can be simply cut and pasted into your website or URL and posted – it’s really that convenient to use!

What other keyword density analyzers have you found? Are there any better ones out there?

In today’s article I am going to discuss a SEO software package that has become invaluable to me in recent months. It is an all-in-one SEM/SEO tool named WEBCEO and it is quite frankly the best SEO optimization tool I have ever used. And above all it is completely free! There is a paid version but everything I will show you here is possible with the free version.

I’m not going to talk about on the page optimization and search engine/directory submissions although the software does perform these functions. What I am going to go over today is using WEBCEO as a tool in an ongoing SEO project, I will cover the three areas of main concern for any SEO head when trying to monitor off the page issues affecting SERP. Namely keywords, rankings and back links.

Take a look at this screenshot, it shows the WEBCEO competitor keyword analysis window and is pretty indicative of the standard interface.

You will notice tabs across the top, these are used for other aspects of keyword analysis such as niche exploration and finding out information about competitor sites with the same keywords, pretty standard stuff.

But the Analyze Competition window you are seeing is something special, you will see it displays everything about your selected keywords including the Google PageRank and Alexa traffic rating for the top two sites and for you CPC people out there, the expected average cost per click to gain top position. I use this page extensively when designing landing pages or CPC campaigns, it gives me a quick at a glance idea of the possibility of breaking into the niche.

Now lets move onto ranking reports, again this is something I use daily, it gives me a real time picture of what is going on with my websites with all major search engines.

Again notice the tabs across the top, the screenshot you are looking at is just one of a suite of tools designed to monitor SERP. This window is my main workhorse though, it tracks changes to SERP between the time the report was last run and current time.

It will query all major search engines for the keywords you specify and return the position that your website currently sits in along with any changes in position either up or down, new entries and lost entries.

Lastly lets take a look at back links. WEBCEO has a full set of tools for both monitoring backlinks and finding possible link partners.

This particular tool will find all inbound links to a specific URL from a number of search engines, it will also track them over time. You have the ability to follow the link and find out exactly where it is coming from, a very useful tool when undertaking a link building campaign.

I really could fill a dozen or more blog posts discussing this amazing piece of software, I use it extensively on my own SEO projects, I have stopped using any other software tool since I found it. I have only briefly touched on it’s incredible amount of useful features but hopefully I have shown you enough to tempt you into trying it.

How many times do you happen upon a post written by a fellow blogger whose title makes you wonder what the post will actually end up being about? Note that many times that you do run across these posts, they do not have a high PageRank or get very much traffic unless they have been Dugg, etc. And even if they do, could they get more traffic if their post title was optimized?

When I first starting writing for my blog in March of this year, I didn’t even know what the term SEO meant and hence wrote post titles that would make a seasoned blogger cringe! Even though I have read it over 100 thousand times, it seems that a lot of bloggers out there still don’t understand how important it is to write a good title for each post.

And what’s more baffling is that everyone intrinsically knows how important titles are because each person reads a newspaper on a daily basis. For example, if you were to whip open the New York Times web site right now, the top headline is as follows:

“New Stem Cell Method Could Ease Ethical Concerns“

Now that title makes sense! It’s also very search engine friendly since it’s short, yet has enough keywords that it would show up in a long tail search. Now consider what you would think if you were to read the following headline:

“Medical Ethics”

If that were the title for the above article, do you think it would be as easily searchable through Google as the first title? HELL NO. And you may read this and laugh and say that “Awww come on man, that’s retarded, that title is not even close to being a short form of the original title, it’s not close at all!” Well I would agree with you, but that’s a major problem with many blog post titles, they have nothing to do with the content!

As a technology blogger myself, I find this issue to be even worse among our niche because most bloggers are writing about software, computers, technology, and other items whose names don’t have anything to do with their ultimate purpose.

For example, here’s a couple of blog posts that I feel are really bad post titles because they lack keywords, do not describe anything, and are just plain useless to the search engines.

Bad Post Titles

“Unlocker for Windows” – This blogger is writing about a piece of software that you can use in Windows to get past errors like “Access is Denied” when trying to delete or move files. Does anyone search on Google for UNLOCKER FOR WINDOWS? Of course not, someone is searching for “cannot move file” and “access is denied”. A better title for this would be “How to unlock a process for access is denied errors in Windows” or something similar.

“iConcertCal” – This article was Dugg, but still who is ever going to find this product with this kind of title? The software monitors your iTunes library and lets you find concerts in your local area. A good title would be “iConcertCal – Find local concerts in your city via your iTunes libarary”. At least write something!

“HeatEatReview” – This is a great site that reviews all kinds of frozen dinners, etc so that you can buy the best stuff from the store. But who the hell is going to search HeatEatReview! Even some simple text after the name of the site will be much better.

“Joox.net“ – Can you guess what this site is all about? No idea? Well obviously since Joox is not even a word! This site allows you to watch some old and new movies in DivX quality. Would it not be better to write something like “Joox.net – Watch Hollywood DivX movies online for free”???

So what is considered a good title? Well, you’ve probably seen most of those already, but I thought I would mention a few anyway.

Good Post Titles

“Stage6 – Upload video clips, share, watch, download videos” – This site is similar to the Joox.net site mentioned above, but look at how much more descriptive the title is. It has all the keywords that it wants to rank on included in the title. No one knows what Stage6 means and nor do the search engines!

“Photojojo – The best photo tips, DIY projects, and gear in the whole wide world’ – Can anyone possibly be confused by what this site is all about? Not even a search engine! Good keywords and pretty straight forward.

“Dealing With Website Plagiarism: When Someone Copies Your Blog Content” – If someone were to steal your blog content, what would you search for first? Probably something like “blog plagiarism” or “blog content stolen”, etc. This article will probably show up higher since the keywords will match in the title.

Conclusion

So when writing post titles, always try to think from a searchers perspective and what they would type in if they were looking for this product or service. Yes, backlinks and the content of the post matter a lot and I’m not denying that, I’m just saying that if ALL OTHER FACTORS WERE EQUAL, the post with the better title would win out.

Also, I’ve noticed that if someone is not paying attention to writing correct post titles, they are probably also missing important keywords in the body of the content. If you’re not sure what keywords to use, check out keywords tools such as Google’s Adwords tool or Keyword Discovery.

Any comments or thoughts? Post a comment! Thanks!

About three weeks back, Google search engineer Matt Cutts gave a very informative presentation at WordCamp 2007 about what web site owners and bloggers (especially WordPress bloggers) could do to make their sites more SEO-friendly. You can check out the post by Matt here to read more or watch a video of the presentation.

Here are a couple of the basics that I got from the video and written transcription of the talk:

Use plugins like Akismet or Math Comment Spam Protection to protect your blog from spammy links, etc that could hurt you.

Place the Google Analytics code lower in your WordPress template, preferably in the Footer.php section. Moving the script code from the header into the footer will allow your page to load faster. You can put it anywhere in the footer file as long as it’s before the </body> tag.

Replace the default Feedburner Feed with your own custom branded feed hosted off your own domain.

Install an SEO title plug-in that will swap the name of your blog with the post title first. If your blog’s name is still first and then the post title, make sure you install something like Optimal Title immediately.

Install and use WWW Redirect, Permalink Redirect, and Related Posts plugins if you have not already done so. The first plug-in will ensure that typing in your site with the WWW or without it will lead to the same place, whichever you choose. The second ensures that your post URL with or without a trailing slash works correctly. Lastly, Related Posts will include a list of other similar posts at the bottom of each post, thus helping maintain good internal link structure.

If you’re just starting your blog, make sure you don’t put it at the root of the domain. Create a subdirectory called “blog” (not “Wordpress”) and use the root of the domain as an entry point with a link to your blog.

Use keyword tools such as Adwords, Overture, Yahoo, etc to find popular keywords before writing post titles and content. You don’t want to keyword stuff, but you should at least know which keywords are being searched for. Even only slightly different keywords can have very different traffic.

Make sure your categories are also good keywords, don’t just create funky named ones.

Dashes are best for separating keywords in URL paths. Next best is underscores. No spaces will get you in trouble. Luckily, WordPress uses dashes, such as mydomain.com/this-is-a-post.

Do not forget to use ALT tags for images! Even more, use ALT tags for videos, flash animations, or anything else that has the ability to use one.

Make sure your post dates are clearly visible for each post as Google will be looking for that first.

Make sure your web site is viewable on a mobile phone such as the iPhone. If not, make it useable using a plug-in.

Matt recommends full-text RSS feeds for your readers to get a trusted base of loyal readers. Partial feeds get more page views, but you want loyal readers more than page views.

Use the Google Webmaster console to check for problems with your site. You can check your backlinks also easily in case you’re moving to a new domain and need to notify people. Also, you should decide your URL preference or Preferred Domain of WWW or non-WWW here.

Don’t use a sponsored theme as this will hurt you later on in most search engines! Also, no PayPerPost on WordPress since that violates the TOS.

The number of slashes in the URL does not matter to Google, so it’s fine to have mydomain.com/2007/08/13/dir/dir/dir/my-post-is-here. The length is not important to Google.

I’m sure there were more tips, but those were the major highlights of his talk! Definitely, check out the video and make sure to implement as much as you can considering he’s the one who controls the fate of millions of web sites!

Here’s a nifty tool that you can use to check your web site’s important SEO-related stats such as PageRank, links at social book-marking sites, indexed pages for the top search engines, and number of backlinks. This tool is targeted more towards helping your site overcome insufficiencies that you might have when ranking with search engines.

Xinu is a very simple to use, yet comprehensive tool to diagnosis or analyze a web site. It’s also a good way to get an idea of how your site compares to other sites in your niche.

Once you type in your domain name, check off the elements you want to see, and then click GO. You’ll first get an analysis of your URL, the Title tag of your web page, the keywords, the description, and the size of the HTML document.

It gives each one of these elements a rating from 1 to 10 and a thumbs up or down. If you’re not using enough keywords, for example, it’ll tell you how many more words you can add. The next section is for ranking and it gives the value for three big measures for success: Google PageRank, Technorati authority and rank, and Alexa rank. It also lists whether or not the site is listed in the DMOZ directory.

A couple more important characteristics for a site or blog are the number of readers subscribed to the RSS feed, the number of pages that have been saved on social bookmarking sites, and the whether the page meets W3C XHTML and CSS validation standards.

Lastly and most importantly, Xinu gives you data on the number of pages indexed in Google, Yahoo, and Live. It also gives you the number of backlinks for Google, Yahoo, Alexa, Lycos, AltaVista, AlltheWeb, and AskJeeves.

This tool may not be the most accurate on some items, but it’s definitely a great start for any blogger or web site owner who has never looked at these numbers before. It’s essential to get backlinks, social bookmarks, indexed pages, etc if you want to rank well and get more visitors via search engines.

If you have your own web site or blog, it’s always good to know where you can improve the SEO aspects of your site so that you rank better in the SERPs. There are a few good tools out there that you can use to get specific recommendations for your site. I really like Website Grader because it checks many aspects of a site’s overall ranking including the site structure, meta tag usage, head tag usage, image summary, age of the domain, Google PageRank, Alexa rank, Technorati rank, readability of site, and inbound links.

Another cool thing you can do with this tool is add in a couple of competing web sites and see how well your site is doing compared to theirs! A great way to see how you can make yourself catch up to the competition. You can also put in some related keywords and Website Grader will tell you how you rank for those particular keywords.

Once you run the report, you’ll get something like this:

I ran the tool on TechCrunch and as you can see just about everything is accurate except for the Google Indexed Pages! They have over 11,000 pages in Google’s index. For my site, the number was accurate, so I’m not sure why it’s off for this site.

The page structure section gives you any warnings about your meta tags and HTML code. TechCrunch, for example, does not use the Meta-Keywords tag on their site (something I have seen a lot of the top sites doing). Also, if you’re using too many keywords in your site or keywords that spiders won’t like, it’ll let you know.

In the heading summary, you’ll get a list of your top headings and sub-headings that would be seen by readers and spiders. Your first-level headers should usually be your post titles and it’s best to not have a lot of sub-headers being listed that are just category names or other extraneous content.

The image list summary will show you the url and alt text for the images on your home page. This was good for me to see since I didn’t realize that my images did not have an ALT tag in them. That’s good to have for the Google Image search bot.

After that, the tool gives a summary of inbound links from Google and Yahoo and gives the current rank of the site for Technorati and Alexa. It also tells you how many pages showed up in Digg and del.icio.ous. Overall, not the best tool out there probably, but a decent one that I’m sure will get better! If you know of some more tools like this, please post a comment!

Ok, I’m in a bit of a situation here and I need some serious SEO help!! Here’s what I’ve done…I decided to create a blog on Blogger Beta back in March and stupidly did not read about other blogger tools like Wordpress, etc that have more features and that can be used on your own domain name (I know Blogger allows this too, but I was dumb and didn’t know back then that a custom domain name is far better in terms of SEO).

So I started writing lots and lots of posts, but I was using the new label feature in Blogger completely wrong! Instead of making categories like Windows or MS Office, I was typing in full sentences like “Learn the basics of Excel” and only later on did I realize that if I wanted people to get to the posts easily, the labels were supposed to be like categories (I was thinking they were like keywords and I should put lots of keywords in there!!)…

So what did I do?? In the middle of April after writing more than a hundred or so posts, I went through each post and changed the labels so that they were aligned with categories and then I added that to the side menu of my blog! BAD IDEA!!! Google didn’t like this very much and suddenly most of my pages went to the supplemental index, even though they were all in the main index before I changed all the links.

And now it’s pissing me off because more than half my site is supplemental because of changing the internal link structure to make it easier for people to view my blog!!! So I’ve tried to do some research and I’ve come up with this idea…

1. Use meta tags (noindex, nofollow and noarchive) to try and get all my pages out of the index.

2. Then use the Google URL removal tool to take my whole site out of the index also.

3. Switch over to Wordpress after everything on the original blog is out of the index.

4. Delete the blog on Blogger and hope that my pages on the new site get re-indexed and that I don’t get penalized for duplicate content (which would send me right back into supplemental) because all of the original pages are gone.

How does this idea sound!?!? My blog is not that popular or anything and it’s only been around for about 2 and half months, so I’m thinking it’s a good time to try it. Unfortunately, I have a page rank of 4, but I’d rather have all my pages indexed and regain my page rank than sit here and keep writing shit that will only end up in the supplemental index!!!

SOMEONE TELL ME THE BEST WAY!! I need some hardcore SEO people…spare a minute please!
