If you are under a corporate network that has its own implementation of IE settings – most likely your default search engine is Live Search (now called Bing). You can verify this by opening IE and entering a search term in the search box at the upper right side of the IE window.

In the example below I typed “utah jazz” and the result comes out at the main part of the IE window:

As you can see bing is my default search engine – so how do we change this so that we could set Google as the default search engine or some other site? This is easy to do and can be done by a simple registry trick. First let’s create a reg file that will contain commands to insert keys into the Windows registry.

Open Notepad then type everyting below:

CODE
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
“Search Page”=”http://www.google.com”
“Search Bar”=”http://www.google.com/ie”

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL]
“”=”http://www.google.com/keyword/%s”

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search]
“SearchAssistant”=”http://www.google.com/ie”

Save the file as “google.reg” – make sure to include the double quotes otherwise it will only be saved as .txt file:

Browse the folder then double click the file. At the prompt click YES:

This will change your IE’s default search engine to Google. Try using the same trick above for your other search engines! You only need to use the registry hack when the Administrator has locked down the computer and you can’t chnage the settings via the GUI interface. Enjoy!

Web browsers store copies of recently viewed pages and all associated media (images, audio, and video) in a folder on your hard disk, called the cache. This improves performance when you’re surfing, but also makes it easy to grab copies of media files—such as Flash videos or .flv files—for storage elsewhere.

Internet Explorer’s cache folder is \Users\{username}\AppData\Local\ Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files. In IE, go to Tools ➝ Internet Options, click Settings in the Browsing history section, and then click View files.

You can verify this location under the Internet Options > General Tab > Browsing History settings:

Click View files:

Sort the list by file type to group all the files together, and then drag the file out of the folder or double-click them to open.

If you are not using IE, neither Mozilla Firefox nor Mozilla SeaMonkey assign filename extensions for their cached files, so you’ll have to do a little detective work to find a recently viewed file type. If you’re using Mozilla Firefox, open the Cache subfolder of \Users\{username}\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles, and sort the listing by date.

If you see a particularly large file with a date sometime in the last few minutes, try adding the right extension to its filename, and then double-click it to open it.

If the file opens correctly, go ahead and copy the file out of the cache; otherwise, undo the rename and try again with a different file.

Use the tips mentioned above to be able to grab files used by web pages.

Do you want to keep your browsing history unrecorded? InPrivate browsing in IE 8 helps prevent anyone else who might be using your computer from seeing where you visited and what you looked at on the web.

It basically allows you to browse the Internet anonymously. When you start InPrivate Browsing, Internet Explorer opens a new window.

The protection that InPrivate Browsing provides is only in effect during the time that you use that window. You can open as many tabs as you want in that window, and they will all be protected by InPrivate Browsing.

To open InPrivate browsing, click Safety then choose InPrivate Browsing:

A new window will appear. You should see the InPrivate label on the new window. Use this to browse webpages that you don’t to be recorded.

Take note, only the windows with InPrivate labels are not recorded – all other IE windows are recorded in the history.

This is a good feature if you want to visit a page in private using a shared computer. The traditional way is to clear the history manually after you browse the URL – it could be troublesome and you could miss other tracks like cookies and subsidiary URLs.

If you just want to clear the history, you can do so by clicking the delete browsing history under the Safety menu:

All of your browsed pages recorded in the history in IE will be deleted.

I’ve been using Internet Explorer 8 recently and I have to say it’s definitely better than all of the older versions of IE. It’s faster and it’s got some nice features like favorite websites when you open a new tab, private browsing, and more.

The Favorites toolbar (aka Links toolbar) in IE 8 is just like the toolbar in previous versions of IE. You can drag a website to the toolbar and have 1-click access to that website.

What I realized recently, however, is that all of the icons on my links bar usually have favicons from the website. This makes it really easy to figure out which website each icon represents.

The fact is, all those text labels are just eating up space and causing me to only be able to add 5 or 6 links to my Links toolbar. Annoying! So why not just get rid of them and display only icons. You can make your toolbar look clean and simple, like this:

Can you tell which sites those are by the icons? Easily! Here’s how to display only icons on the Favorites toolbar in IE 8:

Step 1: Open IE and right-click on any of the icons in the Links toolbar to pull up the context menu. Make sure you click on one of the links, not the toolbar itself.

Step 2: Now expand Customize Title Widths and choose Icons Only. You can also choose Short Titles if you want to retain the text labels, but make them smaller.

That’s it! Now you can add way more links to your Links toolbar and be more productive! Make sure to add Online Tech Tips! Enjoy!

There’s a lot you can learn by viewing the source code of a website, i.e. what kind of analytics they are using, what CSS styles are being applied, and lots more! I routinely view the source code on many websites to learn how to do stuff.

However, one thing that was always annoying for me was that I didn’t like the default source code viewer for Internet Explorer, which I think was just notepad. It’s nice for normal text, but it’s not a great code viewer.

If you ever work with code, you’ve probably used tools such as Dreamweaver, Notepad++, or PSPad. These are real code editors and allow you to analyze the code in a much more efficient manner.

You can change the IE7 view source editor pretty easily to any of these tools by hacking up the registry. Make sure to backup your Windows registry first.

Step 1: Open the registry editor by clicking on Start, then Run and typing in regedit.

Step 2: Now you want to navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> Software –> Microsoft –> Internet Explorer –> View Source Code Editor –> Editor Name

Step 3: Now double-click on the Default key in the right hand pane. Change the value to the full path of the EXE file for your favorite editor. For example, mine is Dreamweaver, so I entered the following:

Make sure to uses quotes for the path name. And that’s it! Now click OK and exit the registry. You may have to restart the computer, but I believe it changes immediately, so you should be able to right-click on a webpage in IE, choose View page source, and it should open using the specified program. Enjoy!

I’ve previously written several articles on how you can delete your Internet Explorer browsing history using a plugin, delete browsing history manually, or delete just your Google search history.

This is all great for those who want to get rid of any trace of the websites they visited, but what if you want to make sure that someone cannot delete the browsing history on a computer?

Is there any way to prevent someone from deleting or erasing the Google search history and the history of websites visited? Yes! If you want monitor which websites your child, spouse, employee, etc are visiting, then you can use Group Policy in Windows Vista to make sure it cannot be deleted.

Here’s how! First, click on the Start button and type in GPEDIT.MSC in the Instant Search box.

Now on the left hand side, you can either expand Computer Configuration or User Configuration. Choose the former if you want to apply the settings for all users that use the computer and the latter if you only want these settings for the currently logged in user.

Now expand Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Internet Explorer and choose Delete Browsing History.

Note that you may not have a Delete Browsing History option and if not, then all of the settings will be under Internet Explorer, like shown above. Now you want to find each one of these settings and configure them as Enabled.

Disable “Configuring History”

Prevent the deletion of temporary Internet files and cookies

Turn off “Delete Browsing History” functionality

Turn off “Delete Forms” functionality

Turn off “Delete Passwords” functionality

Disable changing Temporary Internet files settings

Disable changing Advanced page settings

Once you enable all of those settings in Group Policy, make sure to restart the computer. In order to enable an option, you have to double-click on it and choose Enabled.

Now when someone browses the Internet on that computer using Internet Explorer, then they will not be able to delete their browsing history, temporary Internet files, cookies, filled-in forms, or passwords.

Note that this will only work for Internet Explorer! If someone decides to use Firefox or Google Chrome, etc, then they can delete the history for those browsers, regardless of what the group policy settings are.

If you want to be able to track Internet browsing history regardless of what browser someone is using, you’ll have to use some kind of third-party software to do that. Earlier, I wrote about how you can use Google Desktop to monitor computer usage.

“Who cares?” I hear you say, “Just use Firefox”

Well, wherever your browser allegiances lie, IE8 is still a very important release and developers have to know what to expect from this new browser.

The current IE beta is pretty unstable, almost unusable so I wouldn’t really recommend giving it a spin just for interest’s sake. The following guide is what you can expect from the final version.

Whilst researching this I was surprised about the number of changes being made with the next Internet Explorer. I guess I’ve become accustomed to the incremental releases from most developers, or perhaps the Firefox 3 release which essentially brought very little new to the browser… just greatly improved existing performance and enhanced functionality.

Actually, before I do, here is an image of a mock-up for IE using the new Office Ribbon interface. This has been discarded, but it’s interesting to see ideas the developers have been playing around with:

User Interface

I don’t know how well this would have worked, but I think I’m glad it was rejected. Great though the ribbon is for applications like MS Office, for browsing small and sleak is much much better.

So in beta 1 you won’t find many changes in the UI, but you can expect a few more to appear for the final release, the idea was to keep navigation and toolbars as ‘thin’ as possible vertically; somewhere around the 120 pixels mark.

Additionally the menus and interface will be a little more customisable, readjustments of existing tools for better exposure and a dedicated Firefox style addons interface.

Standards

There can be nothing more frustrating to a web developer then cross-browser support. I’m not going to go into detail on the so-called “browser wars”or the patchy standards support of Internet Explorer. You know all this, if you don’t then Wikipedia is a great place to start.

Internet Explorer 8 is Microsoft’s first real attempt for complete standards support. This could of course cause huge issues with pages coded for IE6 and 7, so Microsoft has made it possible for web developers to place a meta tag on their site, so a IE8 browser displays the site in IE7 mode.

This is the single most important change in IE8, and one you will probably not even notice if you’re not a developer. Expect some uproar across the web as webpages are broken, but with time it’ll settle down.

From the IE Blog:

In parallel with the CSS 2.1 implementation in the upcoming beta, the IE Test team has been developing test cases against the CSS 2.1 specification. Today we’re happy to announce that we’ve submitted an additional 2524 more test cases to the W3C for inclusion into the CSS 2.1 test suite. This brings the test suite much closer to the necessary breadth needed to ensure that web sites will interoperate. These tests are available on the IE Development Forum until they are fully reviewed by the working group and accepted into the official test suite.

Security

A bit less interesting, but even more important is the security changes. Internet Explorer 7 was a major step in terms of security, and IE8 continues that even more so. Key security changes include:

SmartScreen Filter
Essentially the improved Phishing filter of IE7.

Domain Highlighting
Malicious websites often use long domain names to confuse people into thinking they are on a different website. Domain highlighting exposes the domain name, and if IE detects the site is unsafe, turns the whole address bar red to bring a your attention to the fact.

More Secure ActiveX Controls
Further changes have been made to ActiveX to prevent malware being loaded onto a users computer. Even if it is installed by a user it be prevented from installation. Exceptions have been built in for trusted controls such as Microsoft, Adobe and Apple. Data Execution Prevention has also been turned on by default in IE8.

Activities:

Activities are Microsoft’s answer to Firefox’s extensions, although IE can also run extensions. Paul Thurrott explains exactly what these activities features are:

Activities… provide contextual menus on Web pages that can provide additional information via Web services that will lead readers to new locations. The contents of these contextual menus are determined by what’s selected on the page and which Activities are available in the user’s browser. Put another way, the functionality is not provided by the underlying Web site at all. It is instead provided by the browser via this new feature.

On one level, Activities are interesting and useful, as we’ll see in a moment. However, they also allow users to completely bypass whatever facilities the Web site itself has provided. So, for example, you might use the IE 8 Activities feature to find a Yahoo! Map for a selected address on a Web page. But that page may supply its own map, one that you have now chosen to bypass. My suspicion is that this feature will cause the same consternation among Web developers that Smart Tags did seven years ago. What may offset these complaints is that many Activities are now created by Microsoft’s competitors, and many more are sure to come in the days ahead; with Smart Tags, the default tags were all Microsoft-specific, raising privacy and exclusivity concerns.

WebSlices:

Interestingly Webslices where a technology intended for Internet Explorer all the way back in 1996–7. Web Slices are part-widget, part RSS feed. Personally I don’t find it a particularly exciting addition to IE, but it may be different in practice.

Essentially you can take a ‘screenshot’ of a page which then updates dynamically and can be viewed without loading up the whole site again.

Developer Tools and Changes

Aside from standards compatibility IE8 also includes developer tools right into the browser like Firefox does. It has also improved Ajax support, meaning that the navigation buttons can be used be Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) to go to the previous task without navigating back to the previous page.

There are also a lot of general performance improvements.

Enterprise Features:

From SuperSite blog:

Add IE8 as part of IT’s Windows Vista image;

Use Group Policy to control how IE8 renders older Web sites;

Improve crash resilience for quicker recovery and minimal disruption; and

Manage and deploy customized versions of IE8 with an enhanced Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK).

As you may have noticed, this release of IE is targeted at developers first and foremost. It’s the browser they’ve been waiting for for years, with full CSS support, accurate HTML reading and standards compatibility.

Many of these changes are not going to be noticed by end users, but they will impact significantly on their experience browsing the web. Hopefully they will be safer, more secure, stability and performing significantly faster.

I can hear the groans and imagine the eye rolls already. “Another toolbar?!?” Yes, Crawler Toolbar is another free toolbar, which can be added to Internet Explorer. Before you stop reading, you may be interested to know about the myriad of features this particular toolbar has to offer.

In a previous post, the Spyware Terminator product was reviewed. During the installation routine of Spyware Terminator, you have the option of installing the Crawler Toolbar. Alternatively, you can go directly to the website (www.crawler.com) and get the toolbar separately.

Now that we know how to get, let’s see what it can do. After installing the Crawler Toolbar, a section is added to Internet Explorer, akin to other toolbars. The two small screen captures below show the parts of it.

The background of Crawler is a search engine website. Included in the toolbar is this search feature, among other choices of search engines. You a not limited to only using the Crawler engine. You also have the choices of Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.com. Just click on the red C icon in the search region to find other options.

However, the options do not only encompass search engines. In the More Searches menu, you can navigate to Google News, Google Images, as well as White and Yellow Page links. Need quick access to a dictionary or thesaurus? They can be located in this menu as well.

Some looking at this toolbar are wondering what the Look for File feature does. Glad you asked! Clicking on this button, brings up the Uniblue ProcessLibrary.com website. This website carries specific description on files that may, or may not, be currently on your Windows computer. Ever wanted to know what alg.exe does? Simply type it in the ProcessLibrary’s “Find a process…” search area, and click Find.

So far we have scratched the surface of Crawler Toolbar. Now we are going to dig deeper to find other options and services. By clicking on the Services button, we are presented with a whole shopping list of things to be added or edited. A couple of them, like the Screensavers section, may be unappealing. But the Desktop Weather, RSS Feed Reader, and Desktop Notes may sound more intriguing.

This section give a person the ability to add more goodies to their Internet and Desktop tools lineup. Keep in mind that the items in bold, are already installed. The exception to this is the Browser Tools section. This area holds add-ons specifically for you web browser. Some of the options are a spell checker, a web form filler, a popup blocker, and a download manager.

The Web Security Guard portion of the toolbar does two things. First, if the website you are currently viewing has been rated by Crawler.com, you will see a green or red colored shield. If it has not been rated as yet, you will see a gray shield with a question mark. Secondly, you can click on the Web Security Guard button to see the safety rating for your currently viewed website. You may also click on the small drop down arrow to view further options.

Feel the need to clean off Internet Explorer’s leftovers? If you click on the small brush icon, you get the options to do just that. Among other choices, with this menu you can empty the recycle bin, dump your temporary Internet files, and removing cookies.

Lastly, you can view the available toolbar services by clicking on the red lettered Crawler Toolbar button and then click on Settings. This lets the user pick and choose among the basic toolbar settings, the service settings (for adding and removing toolbar options), and running updates to the Crawler Toolbar.

While this may not necessarily be the only toolbar in your Internet Explorer setup, it can make a nice addition. If nothing else, it is easy to setup and remove, and the price, or lack thereof, is ideal.

It may come as a surprise, but Internet Explorer also had add ons, just like Firefox. There are, of course, thousands more add ons for Firefox than for IE, but they still exist! You can enable, disable, add or delete add ons in IE by using the Manage add ons dialog box.

I’ll explain how to get to the manage add ons screen in IE and also point out how you can start IE without any add ons in case there is one that is causing IE to constantly crash or not load at all.

First open IE, click on the Tools menu item and then choose Internet Options. In IE 7, you may have to press the ALT key to see the menu items.

Now click on the Programs tab and you should see a Manage add-ons button at the very bottom.

You’ll now see a list of all the add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer and their current status, enabled or disabled.

If you want to disable an add-on, just select it from the list and choose disable at the bottom.

You’ll also see at the bottom a link to download more add ons for Internet Explorer. You can just check out the IEAddOns site to download new ones like PicLens, which is a cool plugin I had written about earlier.

Finally, if you can’t even open Internet Explorer because of some conflict with an add-on, you can start IE without any add-ons. Here’s how to do it. Simple right-click on the IE icon on your desktop and choose Start without add-ons.

Pretty simple! So hopefully, if you are having any issues with your IE add-ons, you can either disable or delete them using the above steps. Enjoy!

Did you know it was possible to open Internet Explorer in full screen mode so that there is no toolbars at the top, no status bar at the bottom, and no scroll bars? Absolutely nothing other than the web page!

This is also known as kiosk mode and it is used on mostly public computers where administrators do not want the public to be able to change any of the settings, etc. It’s also really useful if you simply want to maximize the viewing area when browsing the Internet. Here’s an example of what IE looks like in normal and kiosk modes:

Normal IE:

IE Kiosk Mode:

Note that both images are from the very top of the computer screen. Here’s how you can setup a separate icon to launch IE in kiosk mode automatically. On a blank area on your desktop, right-click and choose New and then Shortcut.

In the location box, copy and paste the following line exactly as shown, including the quotes:

“C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE” –k

Click Next and type in “Internet Explorer Kiosk” or whatever you like to distinguish the link from the normal Internet Explorer icon on your desktop. Click Finish to create the shortcut.

By default, when you click on the link, IE will load up with the default home page. The fun part comes in actually navigating around in kiosk mode since there are no buttons to click, i.e. Back, Forward, etc and no address bar to type in website URLs!

However, you can get an entire list of Internet Explorer keyboard shortcuts at the Windows Help site. The basic commands you’ll need to know are:

Alt + Home – Go to your home page

Backspace – Go back one page (previous page)

Alt + Right Arrow – Go forward one page (next page)

CTRL + O – Open a new website or page (type in a website URL)

CTRL + W – Close the browser window

Even though it takes a little time getting used to, browsing the Internet in full screen mode in IE is actually pretty nice. There are no distractions and it effectively uses all of your screen real estate. Enjoy!

Have you ever wished that Internet Explorer could be just like Firefox? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could extend, customize or enhance Internet Explorer 7, make it run faster, increase it’s security and have your forms spell checked while typing? Maybe you’re forced to use Internet Explorer at your office or because that’s what the rest of your family is used to instead of Firefox.

IE7PRO is an add-on to Internet Explorer 7 that adds a bunch of great features that you can only find with Firefox right now. And the best part about it is that it’s completely free!

Here are a couple of the major features of IE7Pro that make it an essential download in my book if you’re using Internet Explorer 7:

Enhanced IE Tabbed Browsing Capabilities – Features include the ability to close a tab by double-clicking, open a new tab from the address bar, enable/disable tab browse history, enable crash recovery, hide search bar, and select external program to view source code.

Super Drag and Drop – Easily open links by dragging them onto the page and also search selected words by dragging and dropping over search box.

Mouse Gestures – You can perform common tasks such as opening and closing tabs, moving forward and backward, printing, scrolling, and more using gestures.

Crash Recovery – Internet Explorer will automatically restore all open tabs after a crash has occurred.

Save Page to Image - A nice tool that will capture an entire web page as an image file (JPG, BMP, GIF, or TIFF) with the click of a button.

Quick Proxy Switcher – Use proxy servers? Using this addon, you can setup multiple ones and switch between them quickly. No more manual work.

AD Blocker – Blocks just about every type of pop-up ad including flash ads, rich media, fly-ins, pop-unders, spyware and adware.

Greasemonkey like Scripts – This is by far my favorite feature. Allows you to re-mix web pages so that they look different or act differently just like Firefox.

Spell Check - Any text that you type while in Internet Explorer 7 will be spell checked and a red line will be added for misspelled words.

Once installed, you can configure a zillion different options by clicking on the Perferences button at the top right.

You can enable/disable and configure all of the options in this dialog. It includes everything for each feature, such as Ad Blocker, Search, Scripts, etc.

This add-on for Internet Explorer 7 is really awesome and makes IE somewhat more tolerable to use! So if you’re not willing to switch to Firefox, but always hear about those cool features, you can now get extend and enhance Internet Explorer 7 easily.

Have you ever been browsing the Internet using IE happily until all of a sudden you get this horrid “Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close” error message, after which IE completely shuts down and you lose all of your tabs along with any forms you might have been filling out? Now that I use Firefox religiously, this has not happened to be even once, but it happened all the time with Internet Explorer.

So for those poor souls still using IE 6 or 7, here’s a quick list of steps you can take to try and fix the underlying problem. The cause of this error can be any number of things, so you may have to try a few things before it actually fixes the problem. Your error may look something like this:

Error sign
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer. 7.0.5730.11 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 61eb77e0

So what the heck to do if you get this error? Try each one of these steps and see if the problem goes away:

Open IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, and clear out the temporary Internet files. Click Delete All and choose the option to delete all offline content also. In case you downloaded some executable file that is causing the problem, this will remove it.

Run anti-spyware and anti-virus software on the computer. Download Adware and Spybot and run each to remove any malware. Also, download CCleaner and HiJackThis and run both applications. Remove unwanted entries that you see when you run HiJackThis (you’ll have to read the docs to know what to remove).

Go to Start, Run and then type in MSCONFIG. Click on the Startup tab and uncheck all items and then re-start the computer. This disables all startup programs from running. If you still get the error, go ahead and turn them back on the same way.

Disable Smarts Tags in Internet Explorer by going to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, and then clearing the Enable Smart Tags check box.

Install the latest updates from Microsoft Update web site. If you started receiving this error AFTER installing the latest updates, you will have to perform a System Restore to the point before you installed the updates. You can access the System Restore feature by going to Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then System Tools.

Use System File Checker to scan for changes or modifications to Windows protected files. If any files were overwritten or deleted, etc, SFC will automatically retrieve the correct version of the file and replace it. You can run SFC by going to Start, and then Run, typing in CMD and then typing sfc /scannow in the command window.

Re-register Internet Explorer DLL files. Click on Start, then Run, type in CMD and then type the following lines and press Enter after each one:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Disable all third party addons to Internet Explorer by going to Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced tab and then un-checking the “Enable third party browser extensions” check box. You will have to scroll down a couple of lines.

Hopefully if you’ve been getting this error, one of these methods mentioned above will fix the problem. If you have questions about how to perform a step, please post a comment and I will try to help you out! Enjoy!

A few months back I wrote an article on how you can delete or clean your Internet Explorer cache by either manually going into the IE options or by using a program called CCleaner. Both of these methods will completely remove your browsing history, delete all cookies, and erase all temporary Internet files stored in the cache. However, both of these methods require several steps or a separate program, etc.

If you’re really lazy like me, then you’ll probably want to install a nifty little Internet Explorer extension called Cachepal. Cachepal adds a button onto the Internet Explorer interface at the far right, making it very accessible and easy to use. This is more practical than using 3rd party cleaning software because you are more likely to actually remember clearing out the cache since it’s right there in front of you. Also, if you are a web site developer or someone who needs to constantly delete cookies or temporary files for test purposes, this makes the process much more convenient.

Once you have it installed, you may need to manually add the icon to your toolbar in IE. You can do this by right-clicking anywhere on the toolbar and choosing "Customize Command Bar" and then choosing "Add or Remove Commands".

One the left hand side you’ll see the available commands that you can add to the toolbar. Scroll down and you should see Cachepal with a recycle bin icon next to it. Click on it and click the Add button.

And that’s it! Now you can delete your Internet browsing history, delete all cookies, and delete temporary Internet files (cache) with the single click of a button! Nice!

If you’re using FireFox, then you can check out a couple of add-ons that allows you to do the same thing as Cachepal.

Clear Cache Button

x (Paranoia) mod

Stealther

The last two mentioned not only clear out your FireFox browsing history and cookies, but also the download files history, disk cache, Saved Form info, and recently closed tabs list.

To add the icons to your FireFox interface, you have to click on View and then choose Toolbars and then click on Customize. Simply drag the icon onto your toolbar to use it.

If you know of any more add-ons or extensions, post a comment! Thanks!

In Part II, we’ll go through some more useful tips to be aware of while using Internet Explorer 7. Browsing the Internet might be overtaking watching TV now these days, so may as well spend a little time to learn some quick shortcuts or tricks that might save a couple of hundred hours over your lifetime! First off, let’s go through some handy Internet Explorer 7 keyboard shortcuts:

Toggle between full-screen and regular views of the browser window

Select the text in the Address bar

Add “www.” to the beginning and “.com” to the end of the text typed in the Address bar

Display a list of addresses you’ve typed

F4

Add the current page to your favorites

CTRL+D

Select all items on the current webpage

CTRL+A

2. Change your default home page – If you want to add a new page to your set of home pages or if you want to replace your current home page, click on the arrow to the right of the Home Page button and choose Add or Change Home Page. You can select Use this webpage as your only home page if you simply want the current page as your home page. Choose Add this webpage to your home page tabs if you already have a home page and you want to add more than one.

3. Reset Internet Explorer to default settings – This can prove to be useful if someone has gone ahead and somehow messed up your IE browser and you can’t figure out what the problem is. As a note, the items that are NOT deleted when you perform a reset are Favorites, Feeds, Content Advisor settings, ActiveX controls, Certificate information, and Internet & VPN connection settings.

Click on Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

4. Change number of days web pages are kept in browsing history – You can use this setting to keep track of the web sites you have visited over the specified range or you can specify 0 days, which will not keep a web history at all.

Click on Tools, Internet Options, General tab, and under Browsing History choose Settings. Under History, specify the number of days.

5. Customize web site font and color settings – Changing the default settings for font and color are usually for Accessibility purposes, but if you just want to view all the pages you browse in one type of font, then here’s how to change it:

Go to Tools, Internet Options, General tab, and choose Accessibility. Select the Ignore colors specified on webpages, Ignore font styles specified on webpages, and Ignore font sizes specified on webpages check boxes. Then click the Fonts and Colors buttons on the General tab and choose the desired font and color.

6. Add customized commands to the IE toolbar – There are lots and lots of great ways that you can customize the toolbar in IE, such as using Bookmarklets or installing other third-party add-ons. Bookmarklets are little pieces of Javascript code you can add to IE that extends it’s functionality.

Here’s a large list of good Bookmarklets created by Smashing Magazine.

You can customize the toolbar by right-clicking on the command bar and choosing Customize Command Bar. Then click Add or Remove commands and move items between the Available and Current toolbar button lists.

Hope that helps speed up someone’s browsing experience! Enjoy!

I think just about everyone under the sun who is running Windows is now using Internet Explorer 7 as their default web browser. IE7 is big change over the previous versions of IE not only in terms of security, but also in the look and feel of the entire program. The first time I started using IE7, I could not figure out how to load up the Find window to perform a search on the current web page! It was a pain in the butt getting used to the new interface. So now that I’ve learned a few things, I thought I would write up a quick list type of guide that can make using IE7 a little more enjoyable.

1. Display the main Internet Explorer menu – It’s sad that it took me, a computer person, 2 days to figure out how to view the IE 7 menu! You can either display them temporarily by pressing the Alt key, or you can make them permanent again by going to View, Toolbars and checking off Menu Bar.

2. Perform a search through the address bar – This is something I just found out myself, but you can type in the words Find, Go, or ? in the address bar followed by some keywords and this will quickly perform a search using your default search provider. The cool thing here is that if your default search provider is Google, then typing in ? keyword, is like pressing the I’m Feeling Lucky button.

Try it out, type in ? Honda Accord into the address bar in IE7 and press Enter. You get taken straight to http://automobiles.honda.com/accord-sedan/, which is the home page of the Accord on Honda’s website! Nice!

3. Add different search providers and switch easily – This is a great way to search for something that maybe the default search engine is not the best for, i.e. books on Amazon, phone number of a business, jobs at Monster, reviews of a computer, etc. At the top right you’ll see Instant Search Box and it should have the name of the default search engine written inside the text box.

Click on the little arrow to the right of the magnifying glass, and choose Find More Providers. You’ll get a whole list of search providers for the web and for specific topics like I mentioned above. So if you’re don’t find what you want through Google, add a few providers and then before you perform a search, just click the arrow and choose another one.

4. Add a group of tabs to your favorites at one time – Here’s a nifty little trick that might come in handy once in a while. Let’s say you have 3 or 4 different tabs open and you want to add all of them to your favorites; you could manually click on each tab and add it to the Favorites or you could click on the Favorites menu option and choose Add Tab Group to Favorites.

5. Open a folder of Favorites as a group of tabs – This is also a nifty little trick whereby you can open an entire folder of Favorites each into a separate tab quickly. Click the Favorites button (not the menu option at the top, but the gold star), then navigate to the folder you want to open, and click the blue arrow to the right of the folder name. All of the pages will open on separate tabs!

6. Use the Quick Tabs button to easily switch between open tabs – I found this tip to be one of the most useful so far! I hate it when I have 5 tabs open and I have to press CNTRL + TAB to move between them. Click on the Quick Tabs button and you’ll get a thumbnail view of each web site, which you can click on to view.

The Quick Tabs icon might not be easy to find, but it’s the one to the right of the gold favorite icons and it has 4 little boxes in it. You can also click that black arrow that is to the right of the Quick Tabs button and choose the site from there.

7. Add Links toolbar to easily access your favorite pages - One problem with any browser is that you can add more than one site to load when you start up the browser, but this spawns multiple IE processes and eats up resources. So for those of us who routinely visit a few sites over and over again, it’s a lot easier to just click a button and have the page load in the same window rather than multiple windows. Also, if you’re like me and don’t use either of these methods, then you’re wasting time typing the address in over and over.

To add the Links toolbar to IE, click on View, Toolbars, and choose Links. You should now see a Links toolbar below your other bars.

If for some reason your Links bar is way off to the right or something like that, right click on any empty spot on the toolbar section and uncheck Lock the Toolbars. Now drag the Links bar down so it has it’s own space.

To add sites to the toolbar, all you have to do is drag the small icon that’s in the address bar for the site onto the Links toolbar. For example, if you go to Microsoft.com, you’ll see in the address bar Microsoft’s blue icon, which you can click on and drag down to the toolbar.

As you can see, I’ve dragged the Microsoft icon down to the Links bar at the bottom.

I thought this would be a quick guide, but there’s a good number of tips to give, so I’ll split this up into a series to make it more digestible!
