Offline Gmail using Google Gears

Posted on February 3, 2009 - Filed Under Google Software/Tips | 2 Comments

Last December 2007 we have wrote about websites that work offline thanks to Google Gears.  Now we will explore a very significant development from Google Gears for GMail.  You read it right, now you can use GMail offline like how you use MS Outlook for offline use.

So what steps do we need to do to be able to make this work?  Below are some of the steps I went through for my Gmail account:

How to remove a web page from Google index and other search engines

So you have created a web site or a web page and you don’t want anyone else to be able to access it right? That’s a bit of a problem once Google, Yahoo, MSN, or some other search engine indexes it!

Once a web page or website is indexed, it can be found by anyone on the planet with an Internet connection. If you want to hide a page or website from search engines, you can do it in several ways.

Create a desktop shortcut to open Google Chrome in Incognito Mode

The Google Chrome developers release 10 new versions of Google Chrome a day, each with some kind of minor enhancement. Earlier I wrote about how to export Google Chrome bookmarks, a process made drastically simpler with the newer releases.

If you download the latest release from the nightly builds, you’ll now be happy to know that you can add a command line switch to open the Chrome browser in Incognito Mode. This is nice because to open the browser in Incognito Mode right now, you have to open the normal browser window, click on the Tools icon and then choose New Incognito Mode window, which is a pain.

Make charts online using the Google Chart API

The Google Chart API is a web service that you can connect to quickly generate charts for your blogs or websites.  Since it is a web service, you will not have to install anything in your web server.  All you need is a basic understanding on how it works.

Here is an actual example of a chart created using Google Chart API:

You can see that the chart was generated using a simple URL parameter manipulation:

Add Calendar, Docs or any gadget to Gmail

Gmail has been releasing a slew of new features lately via their new Gmail labs section. If you use Gmail a lot, you may want to check out some of the beta features that you can only try by manually activating them. If you use other Google features, check out my previous post on Google Calendar tips and tricks and Google Picasa tips

One reason why I use Gmail as my main web email service is because I also use Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Reader, and Google Adsense ALL the time! When I log into my Google account, I can access all of these services with one click!

How to export Google Chrome/Chromium bookmarks

Posted on October 23, 2008 - Filed Under Google Software/Tips | 12 Comments

If you haven’t already noticed, Google Chrome does not yet have a way to export bookmarks  so that you can sync the bookmarks between two computers! Very annoying if you have a bunch of Google Chrome bookmarks that you have to move to another computer before formatting or just as a backup.

Anyway, if you search “export Google Chrome” bookmarks in Google, you will probably hit this article first from Google Chrome Board. It basically tells you to install SQLite Manager in Firefox and write a query to export your bookmarks. Kind of a pain in the butt!
