Zip and RAR files are notorious for hiding viruses. For an anti-virus program to scan compressed files, it must first unpack them, which often means downloading the file to your hard drive before scanning it.

With the recent addition of Zip and RAR support in Google Docs, Chrome users no longer need to download a Zip file to see its contents. To add this functionality to your Chrome browser, all you need is a small extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Google+ finally released to the general public late last week. The service is still very new, with few apps to give it the wide range of functionalities we currently enjoy with Facebook. One of these missing features is syncing Google+ public posts with Twitter.

Among the other big Web announcements this week, YouTube has announced a new feature where would-be movie makers can now make 3D videos without any special video equipment. Consumers have a love/hate relationship with 3D technologies. The Nintendo 3DS has received grave criticism, while 3D TVs from Sony and Samsung have received rave reviews. YouTube’s videos will play on these devices. Even better, so long as you have a pair of 3D glasses, you can watch YouTube’s 3D videos on any TV or monitor.

Google’s reliability is sometimes unpredictable. Bloggers report being banned from Adsense with no recourse or explanation. Google+ members who lie about their names or ages are reportedly banned from all Google account use, leaving them with no access to their contact lists, Picasa photos or Google Voice files.

As with all other data, backing up your Google account data is a good idea. You simply never know when or if you will lose access to your accounts, either through Google’s fault or your own. Google Takeout can back up most of your vital data.

Google Chrome is a great web browser with a lot of features, which is why I now use it as my main browser over IE and Firefox. It’s sleek, ultra-fast and can be super customized just like Firefox. If you’re new to Chrome, you may not know how to manage add-ons, extensions, plugins or view other settings and configuration pages. Chrome has lots of hidden stuff that can give you a wealth of information about the browser itself and about the webpages you visit.

Bookmarks are the best way to remember important Web sites, but they have limitations. After a while, we amass hundreds or thousands of bookmarks, and unless we are very organized, finding a specific bookmark is just too much work. For short-term bookmarks, like those we make when we are interrupted and must leave the computer, we really just need a way to save our place and come back to it later without a great amount of digging through bookmarks
