Two of the most popular download types are photos and games. Photos are easy, just right click, save image as, done. But, flash games are not quite as simple to figure out. However, you can download them quick and easy by following just a few steps.

Start out by downloading the web browser Mozilla Firefox. Chances are that you may already have Firefox, but if not, you can download it here. Firefox is available for both PC and Mac. When you navigate to the download page, it will automatically detect whether you are using a PC or Mac and give you the latest version for download.

The Firefox web browser is all you need to download Flash games. Navigate on over to your favorite games website and choose a game that you want to save to your computer. For quick reference, here are some links: Addicting Games, Max Games, Kongregate.

Be sure that you are on the exact page of the game that you want to download and make sure that the game is started. You may have to click the play button to start the game, and you may have to wait through a quick advertisement until the game loads.

Right click in some white space on the page to bring up the secondary menu. Select the option view page info. This opens up the page info box in a separate window. Click the tab that says Media.

The list on this page shows you all of the media on the page that you are on. Scroll through the list and look for file types with the extension Embed. After you have the files narrowed down to embed, look under the address section for files that end in .swf. Swf stands for Shockwave format, meaning that the Swf files are the games.

More than likely, you will see the name of the game listed somewhere in the swf file name. After you have found the game, click once to select it from the list and click the save as button. Choose a location to save the game to on your computer and download it.

That’s how you save flash games to your computer. However, you may not be able to play that flash game quite yet. Double click on the game to see if it starts up.

If it does not work, more than likely you need to get Adobe Flash Player. You can download it here. Don’t worry, it’s completely free. After you have Flash Player downloaded and installed, you may have to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

From there, navigate to the location where you saved your game and double click it. That’s how you download and play flash games on your computer. Simple and easy.

*Some websites have stricter protection and filters on them. This may not work on every flash game or every website… but it will work on the heavy majority of them.*

Frets On Fire is a PC game developed by a bunch of developers from Finland and thanks to them, you can enjoy the same experience as playing Guitar Hero. The learning curve for this game is easy, you just need to tap the right fret and pick keys based on the musical notes that flow down the screen (fret board).

Browsing the web doesn’t mean that you must view every website in the same way. Add a little extra excitement to your usual surfing by adding more enhancements.

Previously, I wrote about Amazon Window Shop, a cool way to visually browse movies, music, games, and books. I also wrote about a nitfy Firefox and IE add-on called PicLens, that allows you to browse images on the web in cool-looking 3D galleries.

In order to get started, you’ll need to navigate to its homepage and download it to your computer system. After a short installation process, you’ll have the opportunity to turn your Internet searches into 3D components that move about your computer screen.   

One of the coolest features of SpaceTime is the way it provides you with 3D search results as individual pages. It conveniently presents up to ten separate pages at a time. Instantly browse through these choices to find exactly what you’re looking for. Depending on your Internet connection, it should only take a few short seconds to get started with this new browser experience.

Browse the web in 3D using SpaceTime

So if you plan on just running to the mall and trying to find random deals, don’t do it! Take some time to figure out what are the really good deals in your area and then plan on getting to those stores early. Remember that even if you are not one of the many people who will be standing in line all night, you can still find great deals and specials on lots of other cool stuff.

So, other than your local newspaper, what are the other ways you can find out about secret coupons, last minute sales, etc for Black Friday? The Web! Compared to my first Black Friday several years ago, last year was by far my best shopping spree. I was able to actually get some of the popular products that I wanted for crazy low prices, but I had to spend a few hours researching online.

Here are a few of the Black Friday web sites you will want to check out to find the best ads, deals, and sales.

Black-Friday.net

This has been one of my favorite sites to find great deals on Black Friday. What I like best is that I can quickly go to the stores that I enjoy shopping at, like Circuit City, Best Buy, etc, and find all the deals from that one store.

I can also browse by shopping category, such as clothing, digital cameras, GPS systems, MP3 playes, etc and find the best deals on a specific item, such as an iPod across all the retailers, whether they are a physical store or online.

BFADS.net

My second favorite site for Black Friday deals is BFAds.net. You can also browse ads by store, such as Banana Republic, Costco, etc, but you can also get lots more details and tools, such as hot deals, online deals, adscans, shopping list, store hours, and more.

So want to know how long Best Buy is staying open on Black Friday, then check out BFAds.net. It also has a really nice shopping list that I use to keep track of everything I want to buy.

Not only that, but have an Articles section in which they write up in-depth articles and guides on how to shop for Black Friday. Here’s a few examples:

My third must-visit site for Black Friday shopping is FatWallet.com. I usually end up finding some really good deals on this site that I can’t find anywhere else. I’m not really sure why, but I think it’s because of the huge community of savvy shoppers that use the site.

If you browse the forums, people are always posting deals and ads from their local community that you may not see online or in the newspaper. They also have the largest number of stores out of all the sites! You can literally find deals for just about anything on FatWallet from contact lenses to baby toys.

3 sites to find the best Black Friday sales, specials, and deals

So what’s so great about this? Nothing really, except that it’s cool. It’s basically kind of like HTML art for geeks. If you search ASCII art in Google, you’ll find thousands of examples of what I’m talking about.

For example, here is a normal picture of someone:

And here is the same picture converted into an HTML document consisting of text characters, 0’s and 1’s to be specific.

Now you can paste this HTML code into your own webpage or you can take a screenshot of it and save it as a image. If you want to be different and geeky, you can make one of these and print it out an frame it! It will definitely be more interesting than the first picture.

Text-Image is the website that lets your create these text versions of images for free. Click on the Convert link and choose whether you want to convert to HTML, ASCII, or Matrix. HTML is like the one shown above, ASCII art will look like something like this:

Matrix will generate a green Matrix-style output. It’s pretty simple to use: choose a file, then pick the characters you want to make up your image (default is 0 and 1), choose the font size (smaller size will give better detail), choose a width for your image, choose to show color or just black and white, choose a background color and choose which browser you want the the code to be generated for (IE, Firefox).

You can convert BMP, GIF, JPEG, or PNG images to HTML-representations. You can copy the HTML code for the image by right-clicking and choosing View Source. You’ll easily be able to find the section because it’ll be a huge block of <FONT> tags.

You can copy that entire section and paste it into your own website, etc if you like. If you just want an image of it, you can use a free screen capture program and save it as an image file.

Overall, it’s a fun program to create some interesting art work out of text characters. Enjoy!

Forums, blogs, and personal websites are always asking you to post an image of yourself. Although most web surfers don’t mind doing so, sometimes you’d rather use something else. Search the Internet for a couple of minutes and you’ll find tons of websites that offer free avatar making capabilities.    

Earlier I wrote about Gizmoz, a free service where you can create your own avatar online. But there’s more sites too! 

DoppelMe is a completely free web service that will allow you to create your virtual self with ease. To get started, just click the “Create” tab and you’ll be guided through the creation process. Select your preferred gender, skin color, and eye color.

You can begin to see the changes you’ve chosen by viewing the DoppelMe avatar located on the left side of the page. The next step involved in customizing your personal DoppelMe is to choose a facial expression. There’s a small group available for you to select from. If you’re unsure about which one to pick, consider testing each one.               

Decide on the best hairstyle, eyewear, clothes, and other accessories for your DoppelMe avatar. If you’d like to add an even bigger personal touch, place a background behind your avatar as well. This will allow it to stand out a little bit more.

Some of the extra features require you to create and sign into your newly created account. Register for a free DoppelMe account once you’ve finished configuring your personal avatar. Enter an easy to remember username, valid email address, location, birth year, and the displayed security code.  

After you’ve logged into your DoppelMe account, you’ll need to save your customized avatar. You’ll also have access to some of the features that required you to log in first. Change some of the settings of your avatar at anytime or create multiple ones.

Adding your DoppelMe avatars to a website can be done by cutting and pasting the html code onto it. Include your personal avatar into an email signature as well. Once your friends and family members spot your DoppelMe, they’ll want to know how to create their own.    

Visit the DoppelMe homepage and begin building an avatar to represent you in chat rooms, blogs, web pages, and forums. Let it represent your online personality instead of a boring image. It’s totally free and fun to create. Within a few minutes, you’ll have an impressive avatar worth sharing.

The first required step is to make your own personal character. Choose the best character pack listed among the available options. You’ll have access to multiple customizations to create the perfect star for your comic strip.                    

Make your comic strip fancier by adding various characters and a longer story line. This will help to capture the interests of your potential readers. Toonlet takes the hard work out of creating a funny comic strip filled with funny antics. You won’t have to take a professional art class to produce a worthwhile comic strip.

The Microsoft Speech API is what is used for the Narrative accessibility feature built into Windows. You can also write programs that call the API, which would allow you to let your applications speak.

But making your computer say what you want is pretty easy actually! Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Open Notepad and paste the following text into a new document:

Dim message, sapi

It should basically look something like this:

Now when you go to save the file, give it any name, but make sure you also type .VBS after the name. Also, for the Save as type box, choose All files instead of the default Text Documents.

Now double-click on the VBS file and you should see a input box where you can type in the text you want spoken! Go ahead and type something and click OK.

That’s it! Your computer will speak to you in the default voice, which for me was some scary seductive male type of voice! What about yours? Enjoy (This would be fun to do on someone else’s computer as a joke.)

Apparently, it uses some kind of Artificial Intelligence algorithm to determine if a homepage is written by a male or a female. It’s based on some technology that you can read about at uClassify.com, which hosts a text classifier for various purposes.

I tried it out on my site and it gave the correct answer that I am a male! However, I find that it would be pretty easy to determine that considering the fact it’s a tech blog!

So then I thought I would try a tech blogs that are written by women and see what kind of results in returned:

JenSense – Thought it was male

Webmama – Thought it was a male

VanessaFox – Thought it was a male

Hmmm…not a very intelligent algorithm! Unless these women write more like men than women! Anyway, I tried in on some hard MOM blogs and it was able to at least get most of those as female writers!

Try out your site or your favorite blogs and see if it determines your sex correctly or not. I am guessing that as the uClassify site gets more information from its community of users, the better it will be able to determine the sex of a author. Enjoy!
