Convert Your Windows Computer into a Virtual Machine

Posted on October 10, 2009 - Filed Under Free Software Downloads | 7 Comments

I’ve previously written about how to create a virtual machine using VMware and how to install Ubuntu in VirtualBox and install Ubuntu in Virtual PC 2007. This is all great if you want to start from scratch and install a completely new OS such as Windows, Linux, etc.

However, what if you want to simply take a snapshot of your current operating system and virtualize it? Though I have talked about converting a physical server into a virtual server, I have not yet discussed how to take a consumer OS, such as Windows XP and convert that into your own virtual machine.

Free Photo Editing Software – Photoscape

We have shown you a couple of cool free photo editing tools like Irfanview and Google Picasa.  Let me show you another freeware that could become part of your essential photo editing toolbox.  The freeware is called PhotoScape from www.photoscape.org.

Like Irfanview and Picasa, this software packs a lot of functionality: picture viewer, editor, animated gif creator, color picker, raw format converter, picture frame maker and others.  The first thing a user will see on the GUI is an arranged shortcut to these functions.

How to Split Up Large Files using GSplit

Posted on August 11, 2009 - Filed Under Free Software Downloads | 1 Comment

GSplit, from http://www.gdgsoft.com/gsplit/, is a free application used to split large files into smaller files. These smaller files can be easily copied to a floppy disk or any removable media.  It is also a good work around if your email has a quota on attachment size.

After transferring the smaller files, you don’t have to worry joining them because you can rejoin these files when you use the self-joining option.

To split a file, click the browse button in the Original File under the General tab to locate the file you want to split.

How to Access Yahoo! Mail using POP3 for Free

Posted on June 25, 2009 - Filed Under Free Software Downloads | 22 Comments

By default, you cannot access your Yahoo! Mail using POP3 unless you purchase the Yahoo! Mail Plus plan, which costs $20 a year. That’s not really a lot of money, but for those people who feel it should be completely free (like Gmail), here’s how to get around it.

Note that Yahoo! Mail Plus also has additional benefits other than POP3 access, which Gmail might not have, such as a 20MB limit for attachments, Email Forwarding, no ads on your mail interface, and no promotional taglines on outgoing messages.

Create Persistent Substituted Drives (subst) in Windows

Posted on June 16, 2009 - Filed Under Free Software Downloads | 12 Comments

Ever create a substituted drive in Windows before? If not, the SUBST command in Windows allows you to map a long path, such as C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook to a drive letter like Z:.

Whenever you click on the Z drive in My Computer, you will actually be pointing to the long folder path I mentioned above. Pretty sweet eh! This can be very useful on many occasions, especially when working with paths that are long than 256 characters.

DownThemAll is a Firefox add-on that you can use for quickly downloading hyperlinked files from any web page.  Previously we would need third party tools to do this, but now since it is a Firefox add-on, you can access the download accelerator from Firefox instantly.

To install the addon, go to their homepage and click the download button: http://www.downthemall.net/

To demonstrate how to use this tool, go to a page that provides direct downloadable content like Dave’s Trailer page.
