After reading the title, you may think to yourself, “Only ten?  There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of free programs for Windows.”  This thought would be difficult to disprove as there are vast numbers of freeware programs available for the Windows operating system.  This is simply short list of ten programs that will prove helpful when working with the Windows platform.

In the past, I’ve talked a lot about backups! Backup software for servers, backing up you PC, backing up the registry, etc, etc. It’s never a bad thing to have your data backed up ten different ways.

Personally, I have local backups, remote backups, backups of just my files, backups of my entire system, and backups of my physical hardware! The amount we rely on computer these days necessitates this kind of paranoia.

Have you noticed that whenever you pop in your USB drive in Windows XP, it first scans it (autoplay) and then gives you a menu of options, such as transferring photos, playing files in Windows Media player, or opening a folder to view the files?

This list is automatically generated based on the type of content stored on your USB drive. This is great if you really use one of those options, but what if you always choose “Open folder to view files” or what if you disabled Autoplay?

What is one thing that Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, NT, and XP have in common?  Ok, some of you may say blue screens of death (which is possible).  However, the common item that this question is targeting this time is the Windows Start button.

The average Windows user knows that the default Start button setup is the gateway to the bulk of the Windows menus, including My Documents, My Pictures, and My Computer.  While this setup is fairly easy to understand, it is not especially exciting or eye appealing.

One of the most important features in Windows is the clipboard. I pretty much copy and paste text, images, folders, and files everyday on my computer. What can really make you a lot more productive is a clipboard manager/utility.

Previously, I wrote about ClipX, a free tool to create multiple clipboards in Windows and Ditto Windows Clipboard Extenstion, which lets you copy multiple items to a clipboard.

Another clipboard program that I used and liked is TenClips. TenClips is a super lightweight program for multiple clipboards in Windows.
