I logged into LinkedIn today, the largest professional oriented social network, and was delighted to find out that you can add applications to enhance your public profile, collaborate and share with colleagues, and even monitor and track company news.

Applications for LinkedIn are just like applications that you can add and use in your Facebook profile. If you have a LinkedIn account, log into your account and visit the application directory here. There are not a ton of applications, but it’s a start.

Yasni - Find information about people on the web

Posted on November 9, 2008 - Filed Under Cool Websites | Leave a Comment

Searching for people online is a big business, believe it not! Million of people search for information about someone else everyday. I’ve already written about two online web services that can help you find people by searching their names: Spock and ZabaSearch, the latter allowing you to find public information like phone numbers, addresses, date of births for free.

Each people search engine find information differently, some scan the web, some hit public databases, etc, so it’s always a good idea to use multiple people search engines when trying to get information about someone online.

Schedule a tweet in the future using Twuffer

If you’re a big Twitter user, then there have probably been times when you wished you could send a particular Tweet a little bit in the future. Maybe something is time sensitive and instead of sending the Tweet now, you want to send it one hour from now.

Or maybe you have a monthly/weekly/daily announcement that you would like to tweet automatically to all of your followers. Another reason could be that you will not be near a computer over the next several days, but you do not want to break your regular tweet schedule/pattern.

Keeping a diary and expressing your innermost thoughts are common tasks that most individuals have done at least once. Writing down your personal thoughts can also help to relieve stress during unexpected situations. Most psychologists and medical doctors suggest writing down your feelings whenever possible.

How to install and run Apache web and MySQL database servers using XAMPP

Posted on November 5, 2008 - Filed Under Cool Websites | 1 Comment

Most beginning web developers are daunted by the thought of having to install and configure Apache web server, mySQL database server and even an FTP host.  Before XAMPP, you will need to run individual installers and having gone this path I can tell it wasn’t an easy task for a newbie.  If you don’t know yet what these programs are, please see my notes below:

  • Apache – open source web server software.  This basically allows you to use your computer as a web host.  If you have this on your computer you can run HTML, PHP, etc over http in your browser.

Amazon Window Shop - Find best-seller books, movies, music, and games

Posted on November 5, 2008 - Filed Under Cool Websites | 2 Comments

If you shop at Amazon a lot (I do), then you will be happy to know that they recently created a new website so that you can quickly browse the bestsellers in multiple categories like Music, Movies, TV Shows, Books, and and Video Games.

It’s called Amazon Window Shop and it’s way cooler browsing for stuff here than it is on Amazon. At least for me it is because half the time I go to Amazon, I know what I want, but the other half I usually just want to see what are the most popular books or hottest music titles right now.
