99 of the best freeware programs

Getting into the habit of keeping notes and tasks handy always needs some amount of personal perseverance.  Thankfully, when it comes to using technology to help cover the “where” in this matter, matters become somewhat easier.  There are numerous solutions ranging from enterprise level shared project creation software, to desktop based digital notes, though sometimes we just need a simple way to track our to do lists.

One of the utilities in the freeware software realm, uToDo (found here), helps track our tasks with a straightforward interface.  Built with the idea of keeping things easy to understand, uToDo foregoes complex options and overbearing, graphic intensive views to deliver a simplistic view of managing tasks.  Light on system resources, it is easy to install and work with.

Previous task managers that I had written about before that you might be interested in include TaskBin and HiTask. You may also want to check out a free online to-do list service.

From the base setup, uToDo already has categories for your use.  Located on the menu section, on the left-hand side, these headings may be what you need, and if not, they can be removed.  The uToDo tips section contains a “how to” set of entries discussing the use of uToDo.  Project X and Project Y are simply place holders for showing examples of separate lists with pre-built items included.  When you click on one of the Todo List, the associated tasks appear in the right-hand side of uToDo’s window.

Should you wish to categorize your tasks, you can use uToDo’s Tags.  Clicking on the Tags tab, next to Todo Lists, will change the menu view.  Again, the initially places Tags are samples, and you may create your own.  If you click on one of the Tags, then all tasks with that Tag will appear on the right-hand side of your view.

Now that we know a little about Lists and Tags, what about the tasks? To create a task, or list, click on File then New Task.  At this point, uToDo will put a cursor over next to the Add button.  Here you will add a Due Date, Tag, and Priority if needed.  Then click on Add task to list.  This task will be created in whichever list you are currently in.

Now this does not mean that you cannot change details of the task after this point.  You have the ability to easily alter a task.  All you have to do it right-click on one of the tasks, and a small pop-up menu will open.  Here you can quickly change Title, Tag, Due Date, Priority, or any Notes attached to the task.  You also have the option to relocate the task in a different list, if you created task in the wrong list.  If you so choose, you can also create a Sticky Note that sits on your Windows desktop as a reminder.

When it comes to a search feature, uToDo does something a little different.  There is a bar between the typical Windows type menus (File, View, etc.) and the tabs.  The Filters bar takes the idea of a search section, and turns it into a click friendly, quick way to locate your tasks based on particular criteria.

Each part of the Filters bar can be clicked on.  You can choose which list you want to look at (or pick All for all of them), use the Hide Done toggle switch (to show or hide completed tasks), choose to show Priority (Low, Medium, High), and select dates (Yesterday, Today, without a Date, a Week from Now, and others).  Each time, the results will be displayed in the right-hand portion of uToDo.

For those of us who still like a paper print out to check items off of, or post to a web site, uToDo does offer the ability to export a list to a text or HTML file.  In this example, we will export to an HTML format.  Click on Tools, then Export to HTML.  After doing this, your default web browser will open up to show the data.

Each person has their own quirks about them when it comes to keeping a list of tasks, projects, and notes.  uToDo may not be for everyone because it does not have a completely standardized interface.  For others, it may be a welcome solution for their needs.  In any case, uToDo is good at sorting and categorizing everyday tasks and makes for a good organizing utility.

Keep track of tasks with uToDo task manager software

In this post we’re going to talk about a new online team collaboration tool called Ubidesk. What makes Ubidesk stand out from it’s competitors is that it has a very clean interface and a great set of features.

It not only allows real-time collaboration among people across different continents, but it also includes all the tools necessary to manage documents, task lists, projects, group calendars, and notifications.

Here are the main features of Ubidesk and how they can help your small business or team manage projects efficiently.

• Document collaboration – One of the nice features of Ubidesk is the rich-text editor built into it. It supports many fonts, text formatting, image insertion, spell checking, and lots more.
  If you have multiple people working on the same documents, Ubidesk has an excellent tool to highlight which parts of the document were written or edited by which person based on a color coding system.
  It also includes a nice revision history and comparison feature whereby you can see all the older versions of a document and also compare older versions to new ones to see what the differences are.

  Finally, all documents also have full security meaning you can prevent some people from viewing a document and prevent others from editing it. You can also link documents to certain tasks that you create so that they are related to each other and everything is organized.
  

• Task Management – Unlike most task management programs out there where you simply add a task and then click a check box after it is finished, Ubidesk takes a new approach that mirrors reality more closely.First, a task must be assigned to someone, which makes sense. After it is assigned, the person clicks a button to “Start” the task. Then it moves into the “started” status and eventually moves to “complete” when it’s finished.

  Other cool features of the task manager module include a Task Log that tracks the complete history of the task, including who edited it, what was added or deleted, when the status was changed, etc.

  Lastly, there is a task timeline that basically turns your tasks into a Gnatt chart, which is very cool.

• Projects – In terms of project management, Ubidesk lets you create public, protected and hidden project types. Everyone can see public projects. Everyone can view protected projects, but only members can edit it. Hidden projects can only be viewed by members.Also, every project has at least one project leader who has administrative rights in the project. They can add/remove members, create/delete folders, and do pretty much everything else.
  
• Group Calendar – Here you have a personal calendar and a space calendar, which lists all the events from everyone who is included in that space. It has a very nice interface and has all the features of a normal calendar application.
  
• Notifications – Finally, Ubidesk has a robust notification system to help keep everyone informed about their tasks, projects, and events! You can get email notifications for document edits, discussions, tasks, and more.There is also a Recent Documents and Recent Activities page that lists out all the current stuff going on in that space. You can also view a list of Upcoming tasks to see what has not yet been completed.
  

Overall, it’s a very feature-rich collaboration tool and you can sign up for free! Definitely check it out if you have a small business or a small team of people you need to work with! Enjoy!

SwapTree is a cool online service that lets you trade books, CDs, DVDs, and games online for free with millions of other people.

The site currently has over 100,000 items added online that are ready to be swapped with your stuff. So how does it work exactly?

First, you create an account and then list out all the items you want and all the items you have that you are willing to trade or swap. The way SwapTree works is that it will match items that you have with other people who wants those items and vice versa.

You can quickly add things to your want list by searching, typing in the UPC code or the ISBN code. While browsing through the site you will see “have it” and “want it” links, which you can click at any time to add to your lists.

Note that in order to get anything on your want list, you have to add something to your have list, otherwise there is nothing to trade.

What’s also cool about the site is that when you add an item to your have list, they instantly give you a list of all the items you can receive in trade for it.

Using their own proprietary algorithm, a DVD you own will allow you to choose from thousands of other items being listed online. Then simply click the Get Now button and begin the trade.

At any time, you can always quickly see how many items you receive via trade at that moment.

So it is really free? Yes and no. The only thing that you have to pay for is the shipping of your item, which is usually by Media Mail and hence pretty cheap. On average, you will have to pay less than $2.50 for shipping an item.

However, what’s really neat is that you can tell SwapTree your address and it will try to find the items that you want that are also physically close to your location. Then you can just go pick it up from the other person rather than shipping! Neat!

Of course, you might be wondering how can you be sure you will receive an item in exchange for sending yours? Well, the site has a rating system for each user, so if you want to be really safe, you can always swap with someone who’s already swapped many times. Otherwise, you will just have to have faith!

Overall, it’s a pretty cool online trading service and they are quite vigilant about people not sending items, so most likely all your swaps and trades will work out fine. Enjoy!

Whatever you reason, it would be cool to create your own online maps that you can then share and monetize for free, right? Or maybe you have a website and you want to create an online map and then embed it in your blog?

UMapper is a cool online service that lets you create custom maps online and then share them with others or embed them onto your site. Check out this map below of the best pizza places to eat at in Boston:

Pretty neat eh!? And it’s super easy to make! Just click the Create Map link at the top and then give your new map a name, a description and choose which map provider you would like to use.

You can choose from Bing maps, Google maps, OpenStreetMap, CloudMade, and Yahoo maps.

Next a map of the entire world will load up and you can begin creating your custom map using the tools on the right hand side:

Under objects, you can add markers, lines, circles, rectangles, and polygons. You can add text to any of these objects. Under Media, you can add images. If you’d like to add directions between two addresses, you can add a route under the Routing heading.

If you have a map data feed that is in KML, GPX or GeoRSS format, you can also import that data right into your map.

When you add a marker or different object onto the map, you will see all the options when you hover over it, such as adding text, changing the color, etc.

UMapper Basic is free for personal maps and for embedding onto your website. If you want to create fancier maps or maps for commerical use, you can upgrade to Premium.

This lets you brand the maps with your own logo and custom templates and also lets you control whether or not you want ads to show up in the maps.

Other features include access to the premium content data layers and revenue share is you decide to show ads.

Overall, it’s a pretty neat site for those occasions where you need to quickly create a map and share it with a bunch of people. Enjoy!

Create your own personalized maps online using UMapper

Previously, I had written about a service called ActiveCiti that lets you create and manage events online. It’s a good service, but I always keep an eye out for new services that do the same thing better.

Which Date Works is a nitfy little online group planning and invitation management site that makes planning an event really easy.

Note that this kind of service is only useful if you have not already picked out a date for an event, but want to ask everyone which date works best for them.

Here’s how the whole thing works. First, you give you event a name and some details about the event such as the location, etc, etc.

Now you will go ahead and put in the email addresses of everyone who will be involved in this event. You can also quickly import contacts from Gmail, Yahoo! and other email services.

Next, everyone picks the dates on the calendar that they are available and the days that are not good.

After people start responding, you will be able to see which dates everyone picked. The calendar also has numbers indication how many people were available or not on that particular day.

Lastly, you finalize the date for your plans and Which Date Works will send out an email to everyone letting them know when the plans are taking place.

What’s nice about the service is that no one has to sign up, including you! You can do everything on the site without having to login or create an account, which is great!

Overall, it’s a cool and simple to use service for anyone who wants to quickly get feedback in one place about the best time to schedule an event. Enjoy!

Which Date Works – Free online event planning software

1. Mininova.org is one of the classic resources of uploaded torrent seeds.  It remained among other competing websites because it has a simple yet effective interface.  At its homepage is a categorized list of torrents being downloaded on that day.

If you need to get the hottest torrents, just visit their home page and look for a torrent you want.  This is my favorite torrent site because it displays the top torrents daily – this is good for finding the latest episodes of TV shows or the latest music albums.  I don’t like how the ads load more slowly than the main content.  I wish Mininova chose another ad server with faster load time.

2. Thepiratebay.org is perhaps the most popular torrent site for illegal software downloaders, thepiratebay.org is also the most legally threatened.  This site has claimed the title of having the largest bittorrent tracker.  The site has a Google-like search interface with checkboxes that enables filtering on specific file types.

3. isoHunt.com unlike mininova.org offers multi-tracker indexing so it provides a combined listing of torrents found on multiple other torrent index sites.  In theory it could give you more search results than a non-multi tracker site.  It’s weakness however is its poor listing interface which they are trying to fix with a sort by date (latest) or popularity. If you could take its interface, you could enjoy their resource of almost 4 million active torrents and 500 indexed sites.

4. btjunkie.org is another one of them who claims to be the largest and most advanced BitTorrent search engine.   At the main page is the most popular torrents on all categories it has stats on the comments with the green metric displaying the number of commenter who liked the torrent file.

5. Torrentz.com My list is simply not complete without torrentz.com.  With its tag cloud display at the main page it is easy to see which torrent files are popular in the Net. Unlike other torrent sites, torrentz.com is only a meta-tracker – it only search other search engines.  So why is it in my top 5 list? It his here because it lists quality torrent content from several sites.  Also, it doesn’t use ads on its page.  Their help page says “Corporations running ads are evil”.

Bing’s xRank, http://www.bing.com/xrank, lets users search for celebrities, musicians, politicians and bloggers, read short biographies and news about them, and track their trends or popularity rankings.  With this you can gauge which people are most popular – a great tool for finding celebrity movers and shakers on the Net.

For example, if you have been drumming up hype for a certain celebrity – you would know how effective your SEO work is by looking at the chart provided on the page.  In the example below we saw that the rank significantly changed from previous dates.

The site also attempts to be a one-stop shop provider – it contains the bibliography, videos, images and albums. The albums link directs to the music.msn.com site where visitors could buy the album’s songs.

There is also a list containing the top ranked celebrities – with stock-like arrows that designate the ascend/descend of each celebrity over time.

If you like to blog about celebrities like actors, musicians and politicians – this tool is a good place to search for the most popular individuals.  For SEOs, the hype trends and line charts are helpful devices to gauge an individual’s popularity over time.

Find most popular searches and topics on Bing

To try this web application visit http://fastflip.googlelabs.com/.  The page displays thumbnail like representation of the most popular news and magazine sites.  With this view, you can see the pages at once alongside other pages.

When you look at the page closely, you can see the image screenshot of each page with the headings displayed as text on the bottom of each screen image.  Since each screenshot is an image file, it can not function like the actual page – clicking any part of the image will bring you the bigger image.

With arrows at the left and right side of the images you can flip through the pages like a regular magazine.  The images load very quickly and it seems like the images are pre-downloaded by Google’s server – it definitely is quicker than visiting each homepage one by one.

The flipping page/image concept has both its strength and weaknesses.  The images load quickly, but the functionality of HTML tags on the page is lost – you will not be able to follow any hyperlinks displayed since it is only a plain image.  To be able to visit the source of the page,  just click the image and it will open a new tab pointing to the URL of the page.

The site offers other cool concepts like being able to search for any subjects and being able to make a custom magazine on the fly.  It has its own voting system that allows users to “like” or “dislike” content.  It is similar to Digg’s concept of “dig or bury” to determine popularity.  Currently, the service is testing a limited number of publishing partners in the U.S. We hope to see more publishers added in the future.

Lately, I discovered a great site that searches multiple torrent search engines so users can search on only one page. Before going further, also read my previous posts on how to make your own torrent and how to use uTorrent, my favorite torrent downloader.

The Scrapetorrent.com engine searches popular torrent trackers when you query a keyword. Users can also suggest trackers that they want to be added on the engine. As of this writing, there are about 280 torrent trackers added on the list and about 200 of them are active – some are probably shut down by the enemies of P2P sharing like RIA.

The site offers two types of search; the basic and TV mode.  With basic mode you can search for music, software, video, and other types.  You can also filter out torrents with no more seeds and duplicates:

The search results are presented with necessary torrent statistics like file size, seed and downloader counts.

The bottom of the page contains how many torrents are found on each portal:

The other mode, searching by TV episodes lets you enter a title of the show and choose a specific season and episode to search.  There is also a link for the recent episode of the show.

If you love downloading content from torrents, Scrapetorrent.com is a good first place to search.  Since it can search multiple torrent sites at once, you can optimize your search time and get the best torrent file with the most number of seeds.

Some website owners may also want a way to see what’s being posted on their own site by visitors or contributors.

ChangeDetection.com offers a free service where you can submit a URL that you want to be monitored. Just go to their website, signup for free, then begin submitting URLs. It has a simple interface for entering URLs and monitoring changes:

You may want to get alerted only when a sizable change has occurred (i.e. you will not be alerted about a date change or something minor) or only if text has been added or removed.

This can be useful, for example, when you are monitoring a page that lists things (blogs, classified ads, etc) and you don’t want to be notified when something in that page disappears.

You may set the alert to send once per day, week or month.  After you clicked the Create button, the alert will be activated and the service will start listening for changes.

The ability to see the previous version from the current is also very informative with the new text changes highlighted in yellow and the old removed texts lined-out.  It’s a great tool to see the slight enhancements website make to the copy over time:

There are other services offered by the site, like comparing two URLs for differences – think of it as diff for HTML content.  Another feature allows you to add a change detection panel to your own website so you can have your visitors be notified of changes.

Webmasters and casual users will benefit from this site’s free service.  If you own a site that doesn’t have RSS or any other way to notify your visitors of changes, change detection.com is a good option.

Get alerted when a website changes

Even though it’s really easy to create a website, it’s really hard to make a great website. Anybody can download a template and have a flashy looking website in minutes, but then it’s not unique.

If you’re creating a new website for your business or you routinely create websites as part of your daily job, you might want to check out a cool web service that lets you get feedback on website design, content and code quickly and easily.

Notable is an online tool built for business-design teams to help create effective websites. Basically, it lets you capture screen shots of websites and then lets you annotate features such as copy, design, and even code that needs tweaking.

Currently, the service is in beta, but they will be open to the public soon. In any case, once you sign in, you can capture a webpage by either installing a Firefox plugin, uploading an image from your desktop or capturing a URL using their capture utility.

Once you capture a page, you can click the Add Notes button and begin adding annotations to the screenshot. Across the top, you’ll see three tabs: Screenshot, code and copywriting. You can add notes to any of these.

As you add notes, you’ll be able to see them by the addition of the number in a black circle. When you hover over the highlighted area like I did above, then you see the note that was added.

To add notes about the actual code, click on the Code tab and then select the code that you want to add annotations too. What’s cool is that it automatically picks up the CSS files and all JavaScript files when you capture a screenshot of a website.

When you click on Copywriting, you get just the text of the webpage and nothing else. All links, pictures, and images are removed. Here you can add notes about the actual content of the webpage.

If you have a large project that has lots of pages for the website, you can create a Workspace to help organize the project. Then you just capture more web pages like before, but now you can also add people so that they can collaborate on the feedback.

You can also create Sets, which are basically collections of feedback on multiple pages. You can then share those sets with others in one easy step.

The free version of Notable allows you to create 1 workspace with up to 3 users. From there, the prices start from $24 to $119 a month.

Overall, Notable is a very useful online service for large or small web design teams. It’s also great if you make websites for a living and want your clients to give you feedback in an easy manner. Enjoy!

Well we don’t want you to pay for anything that you can download from P2P anyway so we will show you a Google search tip on how to search for files inside Rapidshare.

First familiarize yourself with the Google URL:

The URL consists of several parameters like hl which from the look of it is the language of the page or browser.  Leave it to en to have English results.  I think you can change this to other language codes but let’s stick to en for now.

The next parameter is the lr and as_qdr parameters. These are language restrict (LR) and date restriction parameters.  I leave lr blank to allow all languages and as_qdr=all to show all dates.

The q parameter contains the search query term so put in “MP3” for example if you want to see all MP3 files.  You can also put .MPG,.AVI  if you prefer to search keywords with those types of file extensions – great for searching  movie files!

If you need to repair an .avi file use DivFix which is a free download from http://divfix.maxeline.com.

Once you have the DivFix software installed, drag and drop your broken AVI files to its window.  Click the Rebuild Index button to rebuild its AVI index:

Depending on the file size, it could take a while to rebuild the index.  I found this tool to be an effective utility for broken AVI files. I think it uses the same mechanism or algorithm that VLC uses to fix index files but DivFix is quicker and offers more functionality like stripping index and error checking.

Firstly, there are a bunch of them! If you simply want to upload a file and share it with your friends, family, book club, college organization, company team, etc, it’s a piece of cake nowadays.

However, online document sharing sites are also really useful for those who want to read original works created by millions of people. Thinking Wikipedia? Basically, these sites are mini versions of Wikipedia, but are sometimes better because they contain book excerpts, slideshows, recipes, puzzles, magazines, sheet music and a lot more.

Here is my list of the top 3 sites for sharing and finding documents online:

Scribd

Scribd is the titan in the document sharing business. They have over 60 million readers a month and almost 50,000 documents uploaded every day! That’s a huge user base. Not only that, they have documents in over 90 languages.

Their iPaper document readers supports a huge array of document file types, including pdf, doc, ppt, tiff, png, jpg, OpenDocument, and StarOffice documents.

Other nice feature of Scribd include the ability to upload multiple files at once, upload from a URL, categories, groups, tags, and folders.

Finally, it also includes traffic analytics for free, so you can keep track of how many views, downloads, etc occurred with your document.

Docstoc

Docstoc is another decent online document storage site, but not as good as Scribd. However, it has several million documents, so there’s still a lot of stuff you can read online for free.

Docstoc does not support as many file types as Scribd, but it has more sharing/embedding options, such as posting to social network and social bookmarking sites.

It also has better document viewing features, such as fullscreen, fit width, fit page, rotate, related docs, and other docs by user.

SlideShare

SlideShare is one of the largest sites for sharing presentations only. The presentations are nicely organized into categories and uploading is quick and easy. You can also import your Google Docs presentations into SlideShare.

SlideShare also has some nice social networking features like the ability to Follow others (like twitter), start discussions, and create groups, etc.

You can embed the slideshows onto your own blog or website or share the slideshows with others privately. You can also sync audio to your slides and market your own events on SlideShare.

I’m sure others will feel that these are not the best document sharing sites, so feel free to post what you think is best. Other good sites include DocShare, Yudu Freedom, and Calameo.  Enjoy!
