The term rootkit or root kit originally referred to a maliciously modified set of administrative tools for a Unix-like operating system that granted root access. If an intruder could replace the standard administrative tools on a system with a rootkit, the modified tools would allow the intruder to maintain root access over the system while concealing these activities from the legitimate system administrator.

In Windows world, the term rootkit is also used to describe the mechanisms and techniques whereby malware, including viruses, spyware, and trojans, attempt to hide their presence from spyware blockers, antivirus, and system management utilities.

A free rootkit revealer from Sysinternals is a very lightweight tool that I use to scan for probable rootkit anomalies. The tool doesn’t tell you if the anomalies are good or bad. Some that are hidden from the Windows API are valid like ongoing file downloads.

You should examine all discrepancies and determine the likelihood that they indicate the presence of a rootkit. Unfortunately, there is no definitive way to determine, based on the output, if a rootkit is present, but you should examine all reported discrepancies to ensure that they are explainable.

If you determine that you have a rootkit installed, search the web for removal instructions. If you are unsure as to how to remove a rootkit you should reformat the system’s hard disk and reinstall Windows.

Ben Carigtan shows you how it’s done.

Firefox is a great browser and I’ve written about it extensively already. Some of my favorite include how to use Firefox add-ons, how to speed up Firefox, and tweak the about:config settings in Firefox.

In this post, I will talk about how to customize the Firefox toolbar. The toolbar is very flexible and can be modified in just about any way you can think of.

To get started customizing the Firefox toolbar, go to View, Toolbars and then choose Customize.

Now if you want to create your own custom toolbar in Firefox with your own buttons, go ahead and click on the Add New Toolbar button.

Go ahead and type in a name for your toolbar and click OK.

A new toolbar will appear below the main toolbar that will be totally blank. At this point, you can begin dragging icons from the Customize Toolbar dialog onto the new toolbar. Here I have added buttons for Downloads, Bookmarks, adding a new tab, and for other add-ons like Live HTTP Headers and Amazon S3.

Also, notice that the toolbar just shows the icons and not the text plus the icons are a little big in size. You can change both of those things by clicking on the drop down menu next to Show and checking the box Use Small Icons.

That’s about it! Note that when you install a new add-on, such as PageSpeed, which analyzes the performance of your website, you can add that button to your custom toolbar. Enjoy!

I’ve previously written an article on how to network two computers together that are running Windows XP. I’ve also written about a cool program called WiPeer that lets you connect two computers wirelessly and share data!

However, I’ve never really written a troubleshooting guide for file sharing or networking two computers. Unfortunately, Windows can be finicky and even though you may think everything should work, accessing a share on another computer may not work.

So if you’ve read my post on creating a peer to peer network at home, but still cannot access a share on another computer on the same network, try out the following troubleshooting tips!

1. Workgroup – Make sure that each computer that you want to access is in the same workgroup. The name of the workgroup should be exactly the same on every computer. Also, be sure to use the same case for the names (all upper or all lower).

2. File and Printer Sharing – Make sure that file and printer sharing is turned on for the network adapter. You can enable this by going to Control Panel, Network Connections, right-clicking on the network connection, choosing Properties and making sure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is checked.

3. Correct Subnet and IP addresses – You really shouldn’t have this problem if all your computers are connected to the same router, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Make sure that the Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are the same for all computers. If these are not the same, then you will have issues connecting the computers over the network.

You can view these details by going to Start, Run, typing CMD and then typing IPCONFIG /ALL at the command prompt on each computer.

4. Check Firewalls – My suggestion here would be to first disable the Windows Firewall on all computers and then try to access the shared folders. Also, be sure to disable any third-party firewall programs like Norton or Comodo.

If you find that the sharing works with the firewall off, make sure to add File and Printer Sharing to the exceptions list in your Windows Firewall and third-party firewall programs.

5. Shared Permissions – If you are getting the “You might not have permission to use this network resource…Access is Denied.”, your problem could also be that the permissions for the shared directory are not properly set.

Depending on whether you are running XP Home or XP Pro, you will have to configure the sharing properly. For XP Home, you can only share files using Simple File Sharing. It’s pretty easy because they have a wizard to walk you through the sharing process.

For XP Pro, you need to disable Simple File Sharing and set the NTFS permissions and share permissions to allow everyone access. You can read my post here on how to configure share and NTFS permissions in Windows.

6. Use TCP/IP Protocol – You probably don’t have to worry about this either, but just to cover all bases, you need to make sure that the computers on the network are all using the Internet TCP/IP protocol to communicate and not IPX/SPX or NetBEUI.

You can go to Start, Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click on the network connection, choose Properties and see which protocol is listed in the list box.

7. Username and Passwords – If you’ve done everything above correctly and still can’t connect, then you can also try making sure that the usernames and passwords on all computers are exactly the same.

It’s best to have passwords on all accounts and to create a new account on each computer with the same username and password. Sometimes it’s important to create a new account instead of just changing the name or password on an existing account. Make sure the accounts are Administrators.

8. Computer Names – Make sure that the NetBIOS names for all computers are unique. NetBIOS names are only 8 characters, so if you named one computer JohnnyBoy1 and JohnnyBoy2, they will have the same NetBIOS name.

Make sure that the first eight characters of a computer name are unique, otherwise you will have problems.

9. Local Security Policy – Another reason you may not be able to access another computer across the network is because of a local security policy.

You can go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy, Local Policies, Security Options. Now find the following policy:

Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares

Make sure that the value is set to Disabled. Also, make sure to disable only the setting that says “SAM accounts and shares” not the one that says “SAM accounts” only.

10. Uninstall anti-virus and Internet Security – Finally, make sure that all your anti-virus programs are either turned off or uninstalled to test out the connection. If you have any Internet Security program such as Norton Internet Security or Kaspersky Internet Security, disable them!

That’s about it! Those are all the tips I can think of for troubleshooting file sharing issues in Windows! If you still can’t access a network share, post what you’ve tried up till now and I’ll try to help!

Ever go to someone else’s place and had to figure out the IP address of their wireless network so that you could change it’s settings? Most people setup their wireless networks right out of the box without any configuration and therefore have no idea what the IP address is.

If you’re already connected to the wireless network, then it’s really easy to figure out the IP address of the router. I’ll also explain ways we can get the IP address if you’re not connected to the router.

If you’re connected, go to Start, Run, and type in CMD. Then in the command prompt, type in IPCONFIG /ALL.

Scroll down till you get to the heading that has “Wireless Network Connection” in the name. The IP address of the wireless access point is the IP address that is listed for Default Gateway.

Now you can go ahead and type that address into your browser and you should be bought to the configuration page for the wireless router.

If you are not connected to the wireless router and want to find out more information about the device, then you have to use other tools to get the job done.

For example, let’s say you go to your school library and connect to the network via a wired Ethernet port, however, you know there is a wireless connection in the library, but SSID broadcast is turned off for security reasons. It’s basically an easy way to prevent people from connection to your wireless router.

In this type of case, you need a port scanner program to scan the current subnet that you are on to find all devices currently connected to the network, including the wireless router.

First, you should use a tool like NetStumbler to make sure the wireless network actually exists. NetStumbler is a program that can detect wireless networks even if SSID broadcast is turned off.

Just down and run it and it’ll give you a list of all the networks in your vicinity. Note that Windows cannot detect networks that have SSID turned off.

As you can see, it has detected several networks in my area. Now that I know the wireless network exists, we can figure out the IP address by using a port scanner. There are many port scanners I have written about before including Advanced Port Scanner and SoftPerfect Network Port Scanner.

With either program, you’ll get a list of all the hosts on the current IP range, including the MAC address and IP address.

If you still can’t figure it out, then you can get hardcore and use a network sniffer and packet analyzer tool like Wireshark. If there is a computer that is connected to the wireless router, you should be able to pick it up even via the wired network connection. Enjoy!

Here is a situation that at least a few people have run into before. You have a huge selection of images that you have to convert to smaller JPEG images, and make several changes along the way. It is not a simple as batch converting from one file format to another, in your situation. Each picture has to undergo a punch list of transformations (resizing, color balancing, sharpening, and the like).

Now if you only had a handful of digital pictures to work with, this is not an issue. Just open your favorite image editing program, make the needed modifications, then save in the target file format. Wash, rinse, repeat; and in a bit you have the newly created image files in your target format. However, since we are dealing with potentially hundreds of pictures, this method is very time consuming.

Instead of using your image editing program to run through each image, why not try something where you drop the file list into, setup a group of changes, and let a program make the alterations to each file one right after the other? “That sounds good, but I do not want to empty my wallet for a program that will do this type of image processing.”, you might say. Not a problem, all we need to do is download a copy of MODI from the Internet.

MODI (found here) is a non-installed type program (it does not require installation to your computer’s C:\Program Files directory), which can take a list of images and change them based upon your script selections. MODI is not intended to be an actual image editing program, rather is a program that takes popular features of image programs, and allows you to lay out changes in a scripted fashion to change many images at a time. Though it is not a computer programming environment, you have to think methodically, to a degree, to determine how you want MODI to change your pictures.

To run the MODI program, you have to locate the executable file from within the MODI folder. Typically, this would be the folder you created for MODI when you unzipped the compressed file from the MODI website. It would not necessarily be located under C:\Program Files. Double-click on the MODI.exe file to open the program.

At the top of the MODI screen, you have the option of dragging and dropping files into the dark gray area, or browsing to location files via the Add Files button. Either method works well at this point. Additionally, if you select the Enable Quick View option, a picture of the target file will appear should you hover the mouse over one of the lines. The Quick View image will appear on the left hand side.

When you have your list of images selected in the upper portion of the MODI screen, you are ready to add the image alterations. These changes will be applied to the current list of loaded pictures. To find the menu of changes, click on the Add Modifier button.

In the Add Modifier area, you will have a drop-down bow with several choices. For each choice you want to apply to your image set, you have to click on the Add button at the bottom, before switching to another modification. This will create an entry in the main MODI screen, under Select Image Modifiers.

Let’s say that the first thing we wish to do is cut each image’s size in half. To do this, we would locate the Resize function in the Select Modifier drop-down box and click it. In this selection, we would choose the 50% option in the Max Width/Height drop-down box. Remember to click on Add at the bottom.

The next thing on our list of image modifications is the sharpness of the picture. Here, we would find the Sharpen choice, under the drop-down menu. Now all that needs to be done, is drag the pointer to where we think the sharpness of the picture set needs to be.

Perhaps an image watermark is required. From the drop-down menu, we choose Image Watermark, so that we can add some semi-transparent data to each of the images. From within the Image Watermark window, you can choose what other image to use, by using the Browse button, where the mark is physically located on the picture, how transparent it will be, and if you want to rotate the positioning of the watermark image. You can also opt to reduce or increase the physical size of the watermark at the bottom of this screen.

Along with a couple of other selections, we are now ready to convert our pictures. back on the main screen of MODI, you will see the list of modifiers we chose under Select Image Modifiers. Make certain that everything appears to be in order before running the batch. Should you need to remove one of these changes, there are buttons located on the right-hand side of MODI allowing you to do so. Also, if you want to preview what the outcome will look like, feel free to click on Preview Result.

If everything appears to be in order, select one of the options from the writer field in the lower left-hand corner of MODI.

Should you still feel the need to make some additional tweaks to the image batch, click on the Configure button in the writer area. Here you may change the JPEG quality of the new pictures, set a maximum file size, and setup letters or numbers to accompany the new files names of your batch images. Once finished, click on Save and Close.

Now that you have completed your scripting setup, simply click on the Go button in MODI’s main screen, and let the processing begin. After a while, the screen will show a note stating that the batch is complete, and that is it, you are done. Should you want to keep this set of changes for future use, make sure to click on the Save as Preset button, and give the preset a name. You can then load the saved changes list the next time you are in MODI.

Sometimes even when you transfer MP3 files to the right MUSIC folder on your Sony PSP or MP3 player, the Sony device won’t be able to play it. It could be a sampling rate mismatch or the bit rate of the file, so often times you need to convert the MP3 file to a bit rate supported by the Sony player.

Sony also promotes its own music player/converter software for free – the SonicStage. With this tool, you can convert the MP3 file to a compatible Sony-native format called ATRAC3.

ATRAC, according to Sony, is an audio compression technology that satisfies the demand for high sound quality and a high compression rate such as one tenth of an audio CD.

Well certainly we don’t want another music format other than MP3, but sometimes for the sake of being able to play them on Sony devices, we need to convert the files to ATRAC format.

SonicStage has an easy to grasp interface. You can add music files to it by simply dragging the files to the “My Library” section. It can automatically tag your files with its integrated Gracenote service so you won’t have to manually do it.

To convert a regular MP3 file to ATRAC3 format, right click the file then choose Convert Format…

Choose ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus (depends on what your Sony device could support so experiment between the two formats first before doing a batch of files):

To verify if you have converted the file, right click the file, choose properties then go to the file info tab. You should see that there are two file file formats saved on different locations.

Make sure to have room for the newly converted files on your hard disk. I prefer to keep the original files just in case I need to play the files in a non-Sony device like my iPod.

If you can not play your music files on a Sony device, try to convert the file first before transferring – this will re-encode the MP3 file with format supported by your device. I have a similar Sony Network MP3 player like the one below and the steps I have shown above are what I usually do to make the files play using this player.

You’re probably reading this article if you were going to find the calculator on your Windows XP machine to figure out some important calculation. After a bit of searching, you probably realized that your calculator is missing!

Pretty weird right? Well this can happen for a number of reasons, but basically your calculator is gone! If you recently installed a service pack to XP, such as SP2 or SP3, that could be the culprit.

Either way, here are a couple of ways you can get your calculator back in Windows XP!

Method 1 – Reinstall Calculator

The first method is pretty straight-forward as long as you have your Windows CD. Pop it into the disk drive and go to the Control Panel. Now go to Add/Remove Programs, click on Add/Remove Windows Components.

Click on Accessories and Utilities and then click the Details button below:

Now click on Accessories and click the Details button again. Now make sure to check the Calculator box.

Now click OK all the way back and XP will go ahead and reinstall the calculator! If you can’t get a hold of a Windows XP disc, then try the second method.

Method 2 – Copy over calc.exe

The second way to do it and maybe the easier method is to simply copy the calc.exe file over from another machine to your C:\Windows\System32 folder. Also, copy calc.chm to c:\Windows\Help.

Obviously, you’ll find both of these files in those two directories on another computer that has the calculator working. After that, you can just create a shortcut to the calc.exe file on your Start Menu or wherever you like.

If you have a Windows XP cd, you can also try popping the CD in and running these two commands, where X is your CD/DVD drive letter.

expand -r X:\I386\calc.ex_ c:\windows\system32
expand -r X:\I386\calc.ch_ c:\windows\help

If your calculator is still missing or gone, then post a comment here and I’ll try to help! Enjoy!

Previously, I wrote an article about what would happen if you had two computers with the same IP address on the same network: an IP address conflict. But what happens when you have two computers with the same name on a network?

Well, in that case, you might end up seeing a message like the following:

Duplicate name exists on the network

At first, you might think the obvious answer is to just rename one of the computers, right? Well, you may also get this error even if no two computers have the same name on the network!

The reason why is because it could be caused by an old network adapter that is no longer present on the system. Here’s a coupe of ways you can try to solve this issue before renaming computers.

Method 1 – IPCONFIG

Firstly, a simple release and renew of the IP address might solve your problem. Go to Start, then Run and type in CMD. At the command prompt, go ahead and type in

IPCONFG /release

IPCONFIG /renew

If you still get the error, then move on to the following possible solutions.

Method 2 – Remove Hidden Network Adapters

Go to Start, Run, and type in DEVMGMT.MSC in the box. Now in Device Manager, click on View and choose Show Hidden Devices.

Now scroll down to Network Adapters and uninstall any that are showing with transparent icons. If nothing is grayed out, then your problem is also not with a old network adapter.

Method 3 – Rename computer

If neither of these two methods worked, than you will probably just have to rename the computer. This can occur for one of two reasons:

You actually have two machines on the network with the same name

One of the computers has the same name as the name of the workgroup

You can go to Start, run, type in CMD, and then type in nbtstat –n at the command prompt and it’ll show you a conflicting workstation if there is one.

Make sure to look at the one for network connection you are currently using, i.e. Local Area Connection or Wireless Network Connection.

You can rename a computer by right-clicking on the My Computer icon on the desktop, choosing Properties and then clicking on Computer Name tab.

Click the Change button and type in a new name for the computer. Restart your computer and the problem should be gone. If you’re still having issues, post a comment here and I’ll try to help! Enjoy!

I’ve previously written in-depth articles on how to reduce the size of an image file, but have never written about PDF documents. PDF files with lots of graphics and images can become very large very quickly.

In this post, I will try to show you a couple of methods to reduce the size of a PDF file. Depending on whether or not you have Adobe Acrobat (the full version), you can try one method.

Method 1 – Print file using Adobe Print driver

The easiest way to try and shrink a PDF file is to perform a little trick, which basically is printing the PDF document to a PDF file. Sounds strange? It is. Basically, you open the PDF file in Adobe Reader and print it to the Adobe PDF printer.

A lot of time this works really well and will significantly reduce the size of your PDF file. When you go to File – Print, choose Adobe PDF from the drop down list of printers:

Amazingly enough, I’ve been able to shrink a 20 MB PDF file down to 3 MB just by using this method. Not really sure what it does to shrink it, but it works, especially if you have a good number of images that are eating up a lot of space.

Method 2 – Use Adobe Acrobat PDF Optimizer

Since version 7 of of Adobe Acrobat, there is a new option in the Advanced menu called PDF Optimizer.

Now you’ll be brought to a screen that has a whole bunch of options to configure!

Click on the Audit space usage button in the top right to get a detailed listed of each component of the PDF file and exactly how much space it is using:

As you can see, there are six different things you can do to make a PDF file smaller including optimizing or down-scaling images, reconfiguring scanned pages, adjusting fonts, adjusting transparency, discarding objects, and cleaning up the PDF file.

Under Images, for example, you can downsample and compress the images to save space. This is really useful, especially if your images are at a really high resolution that is not needed. For view on the screen, you only need 72 pixels.

If you scanned a bunch of pages into your PDF, then click on the Scanned Pages option and mess around with the sliding bar, which goes from Small Size to High Quality. Adjust as needed.

The Discard Objects and Discard User Data are two really useful cleanup options for PDF files. You can basically get rid of all the extra junk that is normally stored in every PDF file. You can remove tags, flatten form fields, etc.

For Discard User Data, you can get rid of comments, document information, metadata, object data, file attachments, data from other applications, and more.

Finally, the Clean Up tab does a few more housekeeping tasks like compressing the entire file and optimizing the PDF for fast web view.

The best thing to do is to play around with all the settings to see what works best for your particular PDF file. Enjoy!

USB flash drives are great because they are really cheap and you can conveniently move data between computers. The only problem is when you store sensitive data on a USB drive and it gets lost or stolen!

Most people are intimidated by the words “encryption” because it involves fancy algorithms and names like “WPA, EFS, SHA1, etc”. However, there’s a very easy way to encrypt a USB drive in Windows.

If you want to encrypt files on your computer, read my previous post on how to encrypt your hard drive using BitLocker. If you have lots of sensitive data on a laptop, you should read those articles on how to encrypt your computer data.

Ok, so getting back to USB drives! We will use Windows Encrypting File System to create an encrypted folder on a thumb drive that only one user account on one computer can read. Later we’ll talk about how you can view those files on another computer, but for now we’ll focus on just having a secure USB drive.

Step 1 – Format USB drive in NTFS format

Firstly, you have to make sure the USB drive is formatted in NTFS format. Most USB drives are formatted in FAT16 or FAT32 format, which does not support encryption at all.

Luckily, I have already written a post on how to format a USB drive in NTFS format, which walks you through the process step by step.

Step 3 – Create an Encrypted Folder

Ok, now that your USB drive is in NTFS format and all the data has been erased, we can setup a folder that will contain all the encrypted data.

What I like about this method is that you can store all the sensitive files in the encrypted folder, but store other files normally outside the folder. That way, you can still pop the USB drive into someone else’s computer and they can view all the files not in the encrypted folder.

Go to My Computer, open the flash drive, right-click and choose New Folder. Name the folder anything you want, but try not to make it obvious that it has sensitive data otherwise people might be more inclined to try and get in.

Now right-click on the new folder and choose Properties. Click on the Advanced button in the Attributes section.

Now check the Encrypt contents to secure data box. Click OK and click OK again to close out the dialogs.

Now you’ll see the folder is in green, which means the data is encrypted. That’s it! Now you have a folder on your USB drive that is fully encrypted and viewable only by your user account on that one computer.

Next week, I’ll talk about how you can export the EFS certificate from one computer to another, so that you can view the files on more than one PC. Enjoy!

If you’ve ever used the Run command box in Windows, you probably know you can type certain predefined commands to open programs, etc. For example, if you type “notepad” in the Run box, it’ll open Notepad in Windows.

If you type “cmd” in the Run box, it opens the command prompt. If you type “regedit”, it open the registry editor. So on and so forth. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could create your own predefined Run commands?

For example, let’s say I wanted to open a particular program when I typed in my name, Aseem, into the Run box? Right now if you type your name, you’ll probably get an error like the following:

Whoops! Well, with a few simple registry hacks, we can create our own custom run commands to launch whatever program or file we like. Here’s how.

1. Open the registry editor by going to Start, Run and typing in regedit.

2. Now navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths

3. Now right-click on App Paths and choose New and then Key.

4. Now give the key any name that you want, such as your name or whatever else you like. This will be what you type in the Run box later to launch the custom program. Just make sure that it has a .EXE at the end of the name.

5. Now in the right hand side, you’ll see a Default registry key (string value). Right-click on that and choose Modify. Enter the path to the file that you want to launch.

6. Click OK and then right-click in the white space and choose New – String Value.

7. Name the key Path and the value should be set to the path of the containing folder of the file you just set on the last key. So in my case, it would be F:\My Documents\GotSent\.

That’s it! Now you can go to Start, Run and type in the name you set for the new key in App Paths and your program will launch! For me, I will type “aseem” and GotSent will load up.

Note that you are not just limited to EXE files, you can point to any file type you like: PDF, DOC, AVI, MP3, etc, etc. That means you can create your own shortcuts to documents, videos, audio files, or programs! Enjoy!

pdftk is a free toolkit that lets you manipulate PDF files in many different ways. The tool is run using commands entered into the command prompt, which may scare some people, but it’s not all that bad.

Here are some of the things you can do with the PDF toolkit:

Merge multiple PDF documents into one

Split a PDF file into multiple new documents

Rotate pages inside a PDF

Decrypt and encrypt input and output as desired

Fill in PDF forms with FDF or XFDF data

Apply a watermark to your PDF files or a foreground stamp

Update PDF metadata

Attach files to a PDF document

Repair corrupted PDF documents

Once you download and unzip the file, you’ll notice it’s just a single EXE file. The best thing to do is to copy this file into the C:\Windows\System32 folder so that you can run it without having to change into the directory where the file is stored.

Then open a command prompt by going to Start, Run and typing in CMD. In the window, go ahead and type in pdftk –h.

The help is really useful because it gives you examples for each command that it supports. So if you want to merge two PDF files, use this command:

pdftk 1.pdf 2.pdf 3.pdf cat output 123.pdf

If you want to take a PDF document and split out all the pages so that each one is a separate PDF document, you can use the Burst command:

pdftk mydoc.pdf burst

You can also use the program to attach files to the PDF document, which is pretty interesting. If there are certain spreadsheets or Word documents that are associated with the PDF, you can use the attach command add them:

pdftk in.pdf attach_files table1.html table2.html output out.pdf

Note that the person you are sending the files to also has to use this tool to un-attach the files and view them. Even so, it’s a nifty way to spend a kind of “package” of files to someone for review, etc.

Overall, the toolset has a lot of features and is really useful, especially if you want to write some kind of script to merge, split, or rotate PDF documents and then schedule the script to run using the Scheduled Task wizard. Enjoy! [via NirmalTV]

So I’ve been using my iPhone a lot these days and one thing that is a must for me is to sync up all my movies, TV shows, and videos onto my phone so that I can watch them on the go, rather than streaming the videos to my xBox.

Though it’s great for watching stuff at home on my TV, it sucks that I cannot carry around my movies wherever I go! But alas, there are many tools out there that let you convert your videos into the proper iPhone format.

HandBrake is a free and very nice tool to convert most video formats, including AVI, MKV and more into the required MP4 or M4V formats that the iPhone supports.

So how do you use this program? For newbies, it can look a bit intimidating, but it’s really pretty straightforward once you do it a few times.

First, open the program and click the Source button at the top left and then choose Video File or DVD/Video_TS Folder if you want to convert an already ripped DVD into the iPhone format.

Select the video file and the path will populate into the Source text box. Now you need to click on the Browse button next in the Destination section. Choose your output path and type a name for the converted file, then click Save. Don’t worry about the file type at this point.

By default, the preset is set to Basic. Now click on the iPhone & iPod Touch preset in the right hand column. Once you do this, the file extension will change to m4v.

At the bottom, you’ll see a bunch of tabs where you can further customize the settings for the output video. For me, I’ve never had to change anything there, but if you want to, you can.

Now to convert your video, just click on the Add to Queue button and a new window will pop up with the summary in a list format. If you have a bunch of videos to convert at once, just go back to the main screen and repeat all the steps again like choosing Source, etc.

Click Add to Queue again and the second video will be added to the queue list and so on. Just remember to change the name of the output file since that does not happen automatically!

Finally, click on the green arrow Encode button and that’s it! A few command windows will pop up and all that, but after a little while, your newly converted video will be ready to sync onto your iPhone! Depending on the size, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours to convert a video. Enjoy!

Since I’ve gotten my iPhone, I have tried to sync up as many services as possible with the iPhone’s built in email, calendar and contact apps. If you’re in a corporate environment, you’ve probably already setup an email account using the Exchange option on the iPhone.

Unfortunately, you can only add one Microsoft Exchange account to your iPhone, so if you want to sync your Outlook calendar and Google calendar, you have to use CalDAV instead of Google Sync (which uses Exchange).

In this post, I will walk you through the steps for setting up Google Calendar on your iPhone using the CalDAV protocol, which means you can still use the Exchange option for your corporate email.

First, click on the Settings button on your iPhone home screen:

Next, click on the Mail, Contacts, Calendars option under Settings:

Next, click on the Add Account option at the bottom:

Next, click on the last option called Other:

Next, click on the Add CalDAV Account option under the Calendars heading:

Almost done! Now, you need to enter your Google account information. In the Server field, enter Google.com. Enter your full email address for the username and type in your Google account password. In the Description field, type in the name for the account that you want.

Tap the Next button at the top of the screen and you’re done! Just go to the Calendar application on the iPhone and syncing will automatically start once you open it. If you have any issues, post a comment here and I’ll try to help! Enjoy!

If you have an iPhone, you might have been tempted to buy some of the cool bluetooth accessories that come with the phone, like wireless stereo headsets and more!

In order to connect a bluetooth device to your iPhone, you first need to turn on bluetooth. In this post, I’ll walk you through the steps to turn on bluetooth.

Step 1: First, click on the Settings icon on your home screen or wherever you have it located.
